Mastodon is widening its funding mix: alongside community donations, it is pursuing paid hosting, moderation and support for organisations, major gifts, and grants tied to specific technical work. The company says paid institutional services can provide recurring income, while its longer-term aspiration is for community contributions to remain the predominant source of funding. It has not announced a move to advertising or venture capital.
How Mastodon’s funding model is changing
Mastodon’s approaches differ in who pays, whether the income can recur, and whether it is tied to defined work. The table summarizes the routes the project has described; it does not imply that every route produces the same kind or amount of income.

Why Mastodon is offering services to organisations
In September 2025, Mastodon announced paid hosting, moderation on request and support contracts for larger organisations. An organisation can have Mastodon operate an instance under its own domain, or retain its own operations team and pay for Mastodon’s support. The project named the European Commission, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, the city of Blois and AltStore among organisations it had worked with. Mastodon said the services were intended to “establish a reliable recurring revenue stream” (Mastodon Team, September 19, 2025).
These services are for organisations that want operational help or a managed presence; they are not a plan to take over the whole network. Mastodon’s announcement reaffirmed that independent servers can choose their own operators and rules. A customer may pay Mastodon for its own instance or support without changing that decentralised structure.

Donations remain part of the plan
Mastodon has long relied on grassroots support. In July 2025, it tested a more visible donation banner in its own mobile apps. The initial campaign was limited to signed-in Android and iOS users on mastodon.social and mastodon.online whose accounts were at least four weeks old. Users could dismiss the banner, and Mastodon said it would not repeatedly prompt them. The project described a wider, instance-level donation feature as a medium- to longer-term idea requiring more work (Mastodon’s July 2025 announcement).
Mastodon’s February 2026 strategy says it is developing ways for people to donate without leaving the app. That is a stated direction, not evidence that in-app giving is already available to every user or across every server (Mastodon’s 2026 strategy). The September 2025 services announcement also says its aspiration is for Mastodon to be “predominantly funded through community contributions in the future.”
Major gifts and individual donations: what Mastodon has disclosed
In a November 2025 fundraising update, Mastodon reported €337,000 in individual donations received from September 2024 through September 2025. It also named several donors and gift amounts: Jeff Atwood and the Atwood Family (€2.2 million), AltStore (€260,000) and GCC (€65,000), along with Biz Stone and Craig Newmark; amounts for the latter two were not stated in the update. Mastodon said donor names were disclosed with their consent (Mastodon’s November 2025 update).

These are figures Mastodon disclosed, not independently audited figures in the available reporting. They show that gifts can be a significant part of its funding mix, but they do not establish how much any donor will give in future years.
Grants fund defined technical work
In April 2026, Mastodon announced a €614,000 service agreement with the Sovereign Tech Fund for technical and ecosystem improvements. Of that total, €90,000 is earmarked for other Fediverse projects implementing protocols developed through the work (Mastodon’s April 2026 announcement).

This agreement should be understood as funding tied to a service scope, not as unrestricted operating income or a recurring subscription. Its protocol work also has an ecosystem dimension: part of the funding is intended to support other projects implementing the resulting protocols.
What the reported revenue figures do—and do not—show
Mastodon’s Annual Report 2024 reported €2.2 million in revenue for 2024 and set a €4.2 million revenue target for 2025. The target is not a reported result, so it should not be read as proof that Mastodon earned €4.2 million in 2025. The report’s graphic attributes 2024 revenue mix as 85% major gifts, 10% small gifts and 5% other; the report text reviewed does not further define “other” (Mastodon’s Annual Report 2024).

The separate €337,000 individual-donation figure covers September 2024 to September 2025, while the revenue mix is for 2024. Because the periods and categories differ, these figures should not be combined as if they were a single breakdown.
How a changing funding mix relates to Mastodon’s structure
Mastodon’s funding plans do not mean that it intends to centrally host or manage every server. Its paid services give institutions an option to buy hosting, moderation or support; independent server operators retain the freedom to choose their own arrangements and rules. Community contributions remain an explicit long-term priority, while grants can support technical work that benefits projects beyond Mastodon itself.

The organisation’s legal structure is also in transition. In February 2026, Mastodon described forming a Belgian nonprofit parent as a next step after arrangements involving a German fiscal sponsor and a US 501(c)(3) entity. A July 2026 post referred to a future EU-based nonprofit holding organisation, but the sources available through September 27, 2026 do not confirm that it formally launched. The transition should therefore be described as planned or in progress, not completed (Mastodon’s 2026 strategy; Mastodon’s July 2026 update).
