One roofing square covers 100 square feet of roof surface. A square is an area-measurement unit used for roofing estimates; it is not a bundle of shingles. The number of bundles needed for one square depends on the specific shingle, so check its package or current manufacturer specification.
What a roofing square means
A roofing square is 100 square feet of the roof’s actual surface—not 100 square feet of the home’s ground-level footprint. Roof pitch, slopes and architectural features affect how much surface must be covered. Both IKO and GAF use 100 square feet as the definition.
How many bundles make a square?
Three bundles per square is common for asphalt shingles, but it is not a universal rule. Bundle coverage varies with the shingle’s size and profile; do not infer it from the number of shingles in a bundle. Use the exact product’s package coverage or manufacturer specification.

How to estimate the number of bundles
- Find the roof-surface area. Measure the sloped roof planes rather than using the home’s footprint. For a complex roof or a precise order, consider a professional measurement.
- Convert square feet to roofing squares. Divide roof-surface square feet by 100. For example, a measured 2,400-square-foot roof is 24 squares before any waste allowance.
- Calculate base bundles. Multiply the number of squares by the product’s stated bundles per square, or divide the roof area by the stated square-foot coverage per bundle.
- Account for cuts and waste, then round up. GAF gives 10–15% as a typical trim-and-waste planning allowance, not a universal requirement. Roof geometry and product or installation details can change what is appropriate. Round the final purchase up to whole bundles when required.
For instance, using the 2,400-square-foot example and a product rated at three bundles per square gives a base estimate of 72 bundles before any waste allowance. Apply the allowance to the estimate, then verify the product’s package coverage and purchasing requirements.
