Start with the coverage guidance for the exact mesh system you plan to use, then account for floors, layout, building materials, interference and the rooms where you need a reliable connection. A well-placed two-node system can work better than a larger kit with satellites placed in weak-signal spots.
What determines how many mesh Wi-Fi nodes you need?
Mesh vendors’ coverage estimates apply to particular product families, not to every system or every home. Treat them as a starting point: thick walls, long or awkward room layouts and interference can reduce real-world coverage, while open spaces may need fewer devices. Size coverage for the places you actually use Wi-Fi, rather than assuming every square metre needs the same signal.
Floors and layout
A long home, many rooms or multiple floors can make it harder for a single router to reach the areas you use. Google recommends adding a point in a multi-floor home; its example for a two-storey, 204-square-metre home uses two points, one per floor. That is product-specific guidance, not a universal formula.
Walls, appliances and interference
Brick, concrete, thick walls, metal and large appliances can weaken or block wireless links. Nearby Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, as well as congestion from neighbouring networks, can also affect performance. In a crowded Wi-Fi environment, Google advises placing points closer together. Open locations with fewer substantial barriers between devices give the mesh a better chance of maintaining a strong connection.

Google Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi and Google Wifi
For the United States, Google estimates that Nest Wifi Pro covers up to the following areas, depending on the number of routers:
Rank #2
- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
| Nest Wifi Pro routers | Google’s estimated coverage in the United States |
|---|---|
| 1 | Up to 200 sq. m. |
| 2 | Up to 400 sq. m. |
| 3 | Up to 600 sq. m. |
| 4 | Up to 800 sq. m. |
Google’s bedroom-based guidance differs by product family:
| Product | Home size | Suggested setup |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Wifi | 1–2 bedrooms | 1 router |
| Nest Wifi | 2–3 bedrooms | 1 router and 1 point |
| Nest Wifi | 3 or more bedrooms | 1 router and 2 points |
| Google Wifi | 1–2 bedrooms | 1 point |
| Google Wifi | 2–3 bedrooms | 2 points |
| Google Wifi | 3 or more bedrooms | 3 points |
Google says home size, construction and neighbourhood congestion affect coverage. It also recommends a maximum of five Wi-Fi devices in one Google network and warns that adding more may be detrimental to performance. That limit applies to Google guidance, not mesh systems generally. Google Nest Wifi Pro cannot form a mesh network with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices, so check compatibility before adding older equipment. Google’s device-count and compatibility guidance has the product-specific details.

TP-Link Deco
In guidance last updated April 17, 2026, TP-Link recommends up to six units for most Deco models using Wi-Fi or PLC backhaul. It describes exceptions for selected Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7 models, and says Ethernet or hybrid backhaul may allow more units, subject to model and app considerations. Check the guidance for the exact Deco model: TP-Link warns that extra units do not necessarily improve throughput or stability. TP-Link’s Deco unit-count guidance explains the model and backhaul qualifications.
Other brands
Use the manufacturer’s estimate for the specific kit you are considering. There is no substantiated universal “one node per X square feet” rule that applies across brands, building types and layouts.

Place nodes to strengthen the connection, not just to fill a room
A satellite needs a good connection back to the main router or another mesh point. Putting one inside the dead zone may leave it with a weak link, so it cannot reliably extend coverage there. Start by placing it partway between the router and the weak area, then use the system’s app or mesh test to check the connection.
Spacing recommendations vary by system
Manufacturer spacing guidance is not a universal standard. eero recommends placing units 20–30 feet apart and no more than 50 feet apart. Google describes points as working best about two to three rooms apart, while its placement guidance says no more than two rooms from the router or another point. TP-Link advises no more than 50 feet between wireless Deco units. Follow the recommendation for your system and confirm the link in its app. See eero’s placement guidance, Google’s placement guidance and TP-Link’s Deco range guidance.

Choose an open location; consider wired backhaul
Keep mesh units elevated and in open spaces, away from walls, metal and large appliances where possible. If you have Ethernet wiring, wired backhaul is an option for connecting units: TP-Link says it provides a more stable and faster connection than wireless backhaul and permits more flexible spacing. eero says wiring is optional but may improve speed and signal strength. Mesh does not require Ethernet wiring. TP-Link’s Deco placement guide and eero’s Ethernet backhaul guidance describe these options.
A practical way to choose and test your node count
- Identify the exact system. Check its manufacturer’s coverage estimates, compatibility rules and setup guidance before choosing a kit or add-on.
- Map the areas that matter. Sketch the floors and mark weak-signal rooms and other places where you need a reliable connection. Note thick walls, metal, appliances and long paths between rooms.
- Start with the smallest plausible kit. Use the estimate for your system as a planning guide, adjusted for the home’s layout and construction. Do not treat an advertised area as a guarantee.
- Place the main router sensibly. Put it in an open, central location where its connection to the modem allows.
- Position satellites partway toward weak areas. Avoid putting one directly in a dead zone. Keep spacing within the relevant manufacturer’s guidance, then run that system’s mesh test or coverage check.
- Adjust before buying more. Reposition a unit and test again if its link is weak. Add a compatible node only if a real coverage gap remains after placement checks.
This process helps you make a measured choice; it cannot promise a particular speed or coverage result. Manufacturer support guidance is not a set of independent, cross-brand coverage trials.
