There is no universal CPU-core or GPU-compute-unit count that guarantees a good gaming-handheld experience. Use the games you play, your frame-rate and graphics goals, and whether you play plugged in or on battery to guide the choice. Product specifications offer useful reference points, but counts alone cannot rank handhelds: architecture, power limits, clocks, cooling, memory, software, and game settings also matter.
What CPU cores and GPU compute units tell you
CPU cores and GPU compute units describe different parts of a handheld’s processor, or APU. CPU cores handle general-purpose work, including game logic; GPU compute units handle graphics workloads. Their numbers are not interchangeable, and adding them together does not produce a meaningful performance score.
Even CU counts are not directly comparable across graphics architectures. The examples below span RDNA 2, RDNA 3, and RDNA 3.5, so a larger number of CUs does not, by itself, establish how much faster one device will be.
How current handheld processor examples compare
These specifications show the range of configurations, not a controlled performance ranking. Power figures are manufacturer-stated product limits; they do not predict battery life.

AMD’s processor specifications describe chips, not which handhelds are currently available in every country. Check local device listings before treating a processor as an option you can buy.
Choose for your games and target experience
Start with the games you actually play
Make a shortlist of your regular games. Demanding recent games, indie titles, and older games can place different demands on hardware. A core or CU count cannot tell you whether a particular game will meet your expectations; look for results for that game on the specific device when possible.

Decide on resolution, quality, and frame rate
Set your priorities before comparing devices: the resolution you want to play at, the graphics preset you can accept, and whether you are aiming for a stable 30 FPS or a higher frame rate. Results at 1080p on low settings are not directly comparable with 720p results using a different preset or upscaling. ASUS’s own comparison guidance identifies games, desired frame rate, quality settings, and budget as factors in choosing between the Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme.
Account for where and how you play
Check performance in the power mode you expect to use. A plugged-in, high-power result does not establish how a handheld performs unplugged at a lower power setting. Valve lists a 4–15 W APU power range for Steam Deck; AMD lists 9–30 W configurable TDP for Ryzen Z1 Extreme and 15–35 W for Ryzen Z2 Extreme. These are different products’ specifications, not comparable battery-life estimates.

Include budget and the rest of the system
Set a budget, then compare devices at prices available in your region. Memory, cooling, drivers, operating system, and game optimization can all matter to observed performance, but the processor counts listed here do not quantify their effects. Do not pay extra for a higher core or CU count unless relevant game tests show a benefit for your intended settings.
How to compare performance claims fairly
- Match the game. Compare results from the same title and, where possible, the same scene or benchmark.
- Match resolution and graphics settings. Record the resolution, preset, and any upscaling or frame-generation setting rather than treating unlike tests as equivalent.
- Match power conditions. Note whether the device was plugged in, which power mode it used, and whether the test reflects your intended play style.
- Check who produced the result. Manufacturer results are useful context, but are not independent tests. ASUS’s published ROG Ally results specify 30 W plugged-in Turbo mode and list resolution and presets; ASUS cautions that results can vary with configuration and software maturity. See its ROG Ally product and performance information.
- Use the result to answer your own target. A benchmark matters only if it shows whether the device meets your chosen frame rate and image-quality expectations.
What to take from the numbers
A 4-core, 8-CU design such as Steam Deck’s is a real configuration, as are systems with 8 CPU cores and 12 or 16 graphics cores. Those examples do not define a universal minimum or ideal. Choose based on aligned game tests, your settings and frame-rate goal, the power mode you will use, and your budget—not the largest count on a specification sheet.
