Magnetic foam can bend, stretch, or do both when a magnetic field changes its internal forces. The outcome depends on the polymer matrix, magnetic-particle type and loading, particle alignment, foam structure, and stiffness. In a 2025 polyurethane foam study containing oriented Fe70Co30 microparticles, bending dominated at particle contents up to 40 wt% and produced negative magnetostriction. Above 40 wt%, the composite became stiffer, bending was suppressed, and stretching produced positive magnetostriction, particularly in foam-film structures. That threshold belongs to the tested formulation; it is not a universal rule for every magnetic foam.
What “magnetic foam” means
Magnetic foam is not one standardized retail material. The term generally describes a porous polymer foam containing magnetic particles. Polyurethane is one demonstrated host material. Iron-based fillers such as FeCo microparticles or spherical carbonyl-iron particles can be distributed through the polymer, then magnetized or mechanically tested as the foam deforms.
The foam remains soft and compressible because most of its volume is polymer and air. The particles add a magnetic response and alter the mechanical response. When a field is applied, particles tend to change their orientation or exert forces on neighboring particles. The surrounding polymer transfers those microscopic forces into a visible shape change. Depending on the balance of forces, the sample may curve, extend, contract, or show a combination of motions.
Because formulations and manufacturing methods vary, two materials sold or described as magnetic foam can behave very differently. A meaningful comparison must identify the matrix, filler, particle concentration, alignment, pore structure, preparation method, and the mechanical test being used.

Why bending and stretching compete
Magnetostriction is the measured dimensional change
Magnetostriction is a change in dimensions associated with magnetization. A positive value indicates expansion in the measured direction; a negative value indicates contraction. In a porous composite, the measured change can result from several coupled actions rather than from a simple uniform expansion.
If one side of a foam layer experiences a different internal stress from the other side, the layer curves. If the stresses are distributed more evenly through the thickness, the sample is more likely to extend or contract. Foam pores, particle alignment, and constraints from a film or backing layer can all change how those stresses are distributed.
Soft materials favor curvature more easily
A flexible foam can accommodate particle-generated forces by changing angle and bending. As magnetic-particle loading rises, the solid skeleton can become stiffer. A stiffer skeleton resists curvature, so more of the magnetic force is expressed as length change. This is the central explanation offered for the sign change observed in the FeCo-polyurethane work.

What the 2025 FeCo-polyurethane study found
Lasheras and coauthors reported magneto-mechanical behavior in polyurethane foam and foam-film composites containing oriented Fe70Co30 microparticles in Sensors and Actuators A: Physical in 2025. The experiments examined how magnetization changed the dimensions of the material and whether the response appeared mainly as bending or stretching.
Particle loading set the observed transition
- At 40 wt% or less: bending dominated and magnetostriction was negative.
- Above 40 wt%: the composite stiffened, bending was suppressed, and stretching dominated with positive magnetostriction.
- Foam-film composites: the stretching-dominated response was especially pronounced in these constrained, film-like structures.
Here, wt% means the mass fraction of magnetic particles in the tested composite. The reported 40 wt% boundary describes this polyurethane, Fe70Co30 particle system and its preparation conditions. It should not be used as a recipe for an unrelated foam, because a different polymer, particle size, alignment process, pore structure, or curing method could shift the balance.
Free foam and constrained foam-film structures are different tests
The study considered freely expanded foam as well as structures produced through constrained expansion that resemble a foam film. A free foam has more opportunity to buckle or curve. A constrained structure restricts some movements and can redirect magnetic stresses into in-plane stretching. Therefore, a result from a foam-film specimen should not automatically be assigned to a thick, unconstrained foam block.

What the sign change does and does not mean
Negative magnetostriction at lower loading does not mean every low-filled magnetic foam contracts uniformly. In this study, the measured response reflected bending-dominated deformation. Likewise, positive magnetostriction above 40 wt% does not mean every highly filled foam will stretch in the same direction or by the same amount. The sign identifies the net dimensional response under a particular test configuration.

Variables that control the motion
Composition
The polymer matrix determines baseline elasticity, tear resistance, recovery, and resistance to permanent set. The magnetic filler determines how strongly the material responds to a field and how much solid material is added to the foam skeleton. FeCo microparticles and carbonyl-iron particles are examples from separate studies; they should not be treated as interchangeable fillers.
Particle concentration
Increasing concentration can strengthen magnetic interactions and stiffen the composite at the same time. Those effects can push a sample from curvature toward extension, as in the FeCo study. Loading is therefore both a magnetic and a mechanical design variable.
Particle alignment
Oriented particles produce directional properties. The same foam can respond differently along and across the alignment direction. Any specification should state how particles were aligned and which axis was used for the magnetostriction measurement.
Foam structure and preparation
Open-cell or closed-cell architecture, pore size, density, skin layers, and expansion constraints affect how stresses travel through the sample. Manufacturing and expansion conditions can alter stiffness enough to change whether bending or stretching is dominant.

Field and mechanical boundary conditions
The field direction, field strength, rate of application, sample orientation, and whether the specimen is free, clamped, compressed, or stretched all influence the recorded response. A bending test, a tensile magnetostriction test, and a compression test answer different questions and should not be combined into one performance number.
How other magnetic-foam studies differ
Several related studies use the word “foam” while measuring different properties. Their results are useful for understanding possible applications, but their numbers are not direct substitutes for the FeCo magnetostriction findings.
| Material or study | Configuration or filler | Primary measurement or purpose | Reported finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 polyurethane composite | Oriented Fe70Co30 microparticles; free foam and foam-film-like structures | Bending, stretching, and magnetostriction | Bending dominated at ≤40 wt% with negative magnetostriction; stretching dominated above 40 wt% with positive magnetostriction |
| Magnetic-foam tactile-sensing study | Polyurethane foam with spherical carbonyl-iron particles | Deformation-induced magnetic changes detected by coils | Demonstrates a laboratory route to tactile sensing |
| 2024 magnetorheological elastomeric foam study | Magnetorheological elastomeric foam under magnetic-field conditions | Compression stress, energy absorption, complex modulus, and equivalent viscous damping | Soft behavior under light compression and increased resistance under larger impacts and strains |
| 2021 cobalt-ferrite stretchable film | Stretchable cobalt-ferrite film; not foam | Stretchability, bending, and magnetic retention | Stretched up to 200%, bent to a 2.5 mm radius, and retained 73% magnetization after 150% stretching over 100 cycles |
The cobalt-ferrite film provides a useful benchmark for mechanically compliant magnetic materials, but its stretch, bend radius, and retention figures cannot be quoted as magnetic-foam performance. The film has a different architecture and does not contain the porous foam structure central to the polyurethane studies.

Adaptive cushioning
Magnetorheological elastomeric foam is being investigated as an adaptive cushioning material. Under a magnetic field, its measured compression stress, complex modulus, and damping can change. The 2024 study describes a material that remains soft under light compression but offers greater resistance when impacts or strains become larger. Such behavior could be useful where cushioning should be compliant during ordinary contact and more supportive during a heavier load.

That description refers to laboratory characterization, not proof of a finished seat, pad, helmet liner, or medical device. A product would also need durability, environmental, safety, manufacturing, and control-system validation.
Tactile sensing
In a tactile-sensing configuration, deformation changes the magnetic state of a foam containing spherical carbonyl-iron particles. Coils detect the resulting magnetic change and convert it into a signal associated with touch or pressure. This approach can potentially provide a soft, deformable sensing surface, but the cited work establishes a research demonstration rather than a broadly deployed consumer sensor.
Shape-changing structures
The FeCo-polyurethane results suggest a way to tune whether a compliant magnetic structure curves or extends. A designer seeking bending would favor a formulation and geometry in which differential stress can produce curvature. A designer seeking extension would need sufficient stiffness and constraints to suppress unwanted bending. The study supports this design principle for its material system; it does not establish a universal magnetic actuator recipe.

A practical way to evaluate a magnetic-foam design
- Define the required motion. Decide whether the part must curve, elongate, contract, stiffen under impact, or sense deformation. Do not use “magnetic response” as a substitute for a specific mechanical requirement.
- Record the complete composition. Identify the polymer, magnetic-particle chemistry, particle size if available, mass fraction, and any surface treatment. A loading percentage without the matrix and filler is not enough to reproduce behavior.
- Control particle orientation. Document the alignment direction and the field direction used during testing. Directional alignment can make the response strongly anisotropic.
- Separate free and constrained specimens. Test an unconstrained foam separately from a foam-film or clamped structure. Constraints can redirect bending stresses into stretching.
- Measure the relevant mode directly. Use bending measurements for curvature, tensile measurements for extension, compression tests for cushioning, and coil-based magnetic measurements for tactile sensing. Report the field conditions and boundary conditions with every result.
- Check the loading range rather than assuming a threshold. The 40 wt% transition is a useful point to investigate in the FeCo-polyurethane system, not a universal design limit. Sweep the formulation around the expected operating range and measure stiffness as well as magnetostriction.
- Test cycling and recovery. Record whether the shape and magnetic signal return after repeated field changes and mechanical deformation. A single movement does not establish durability.
Common interpretation mistakes
- Treating magnetic foam as a standard material: composition and processing determine the response, so the name alone does not specify performance.
- Quoting 40 wt% as a universal cutoff: that value belongs to the 2025 FeCo-filled polyurethane formulation and test conditions.
- Confusing negative magnetostriction with simple uniform shrinkage: the lower-loading samples showed a bending-dominated response, not necessarily homogeneous contraction.
- Mixing mechanical tests: compression stress, damping, bending radius, tensile strain, and magnetostriction are different metrics.
- Transferring film data to foam: the cobalt-ferrite film’s 200% stretch, 2.5 mm bend radius, and 73% retention after cycling apply to that film, not to polyurethane foam.
- Assuming a laboratory demonstration is a commercial product: the cited studies do not establish a standard off-the-shelf magnetic foam, a supplier for the tested FeCo formulation, clinical use, or broad commercial deployment.
What is established about magnetic foam today
The strongest direct evidence is that a specific polyurethane composite can switch from bending-dominated, negative magnetostriction at lower FeCo loading to stretching-dominated, positive magnetostriction at higher loading as stiffness increases. Related studies show that magnetic foams can also be engineered for adaptive cushioning or deformation sensing. Together, these results establish a versatile laboratory platform, not one universal material specification.
For anyone evaluating a formulation, the decisive questions are practical: What is the matrix? Which particles are used and how are they aligned? How much filler is present? Is the structure free to bend or constrained like a film? Which mechanical quantity is being measured? Answering those questions prevents the most common errors and makes results from different magnetic-foam studies genuinely comparable.
