Keep your smartphone as long as it remains secure, works for your needs, and is practical to maintain. There is no dependable age-based rule: check software support for your exact model, then weigh battery condition, other faults, repair options, and the cost of replacing the phone.
What should determine when you replace a phone?
Age alone is a poor guide. Phones from the same manufacturer can have different support periods, so look up the security-update policy and end date for your specific model. The Federal Trade Commission’s 2018 findings documented wide variation in support length and update frequency; they are historical evidence of variability, not a current schedule for any particular phone. FTC findings on repair restrictions and software support.
Security updates are part of a phone’s useful life. When support ends, reassess whether continued use is acceptable, particularly if you use the phone for sensitive accounts or other important personal information. The degree of risk and practical impact depends on how you use the device; an end-of-support date is a reason to review your options, not a universal instruction to replace the phone immediately.
How to decide whether to keep, repair, or replace it
-
Check the exact model’s security support
Find the manufacturer’s update policy and the support end date for your phone’s model and, where relevant, its regional variant. If the date is unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than assuming that another model in the same brand has the same support period.

Work out whether the battery is the main problem
Shorter runtime and unexpected shutdowns can indicate battery aging. If the display, camera, storage, connectivity, and other essentials remain satisfactory, compare a battery service or compatible replacement with the cost of a new phone. Samsung’s battery guidance applies specifically to Galaxy devices; menu names and service details can vary by model and software version. For other phones, consult the relevant manufacturer or repair provider. Samsung guidance on checking Galaxy battery condition.

Compare repair with replacement
Assess the decision using the same factors: total repair cost, whether parts and service are available, how much software support remains, the condition of other components, and how well the phone meets your needs. There is no universal repair-cost cutoff established by the sources cited here; the right comparison depends on the phone and your market.

If you no longer want the phone, consider whether repair, continued use, refurbishment, or trade-in is practical before disposal. Why model-specific support dates matter
Support information can be difficult to find. In a 2024 review of 184 smart products—not smartphones alone—FTC staff found that manufacturer webpages for 161 products did not disclose update duration or an end date. Follow-up searches did not find support information for 124 products. These figures describe the surveyed smart products broadly; they are not smartphone-only rates or a measure of current support for any particular phone. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When it makes sense to replace the phone
Replacement is worth considering when security support has ended and the implications matter for your use, when faults beyond the battery interfere with everyday tasks, or when a repair is impractical relative to the phone’s remaining support and condition. If the phone still meets your needs and a battery service or other repair is available at a sensible cost, replacing the affected component may be a reasonable alternative to replacing the whole device.
