Microsoft does not publish a specific runtime or a stop-after time for Windows Startup Repair. Microsoft’s broader recovery guidance says Windows recovery methods typically take 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the method, but that is not a Startup Repair-specific estimate or a guarantee. If the repair seems to be taking a long time, there is no official universal threshold at which Microsoft says to interrupt it.
What Startup Repair does—and why its duration varies
Startup Repair is a built-in Windows 10 and Windows 11 tool that runs in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). It checks for problems that can prevent Windows from starting and attempts automatic fixes. Microsoft lists issues such as missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors. The time depends on what it finds and attempts to repair; Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance does not give a target duration. Microsoft’s Startup Repair overview

If Startup Repair cannot fix the problem, Microsoft says it provides a detailed report of the issues it found. That report can help identify what the tool detected, but it does not guarantee that Windows will boot.
How long should you let Startup Repair run?
Microsoft’s recovery-options overview gives a general estimate of “typically, 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the method.” The estimate refers to recovery methods collectively, not Startup Repair alone. Treat it as broad context, not a deadline: the official guidance reviewed does not establish an exact Startup Repair duration or a universal point for stopping it.

So if you are asking whether Startup Repair is stuck on “Diagnosing your PC,” the displayed message alone does not establish that it has stalled. Microsoft does not publish a time-based test that distinguishes a slow run from a stuck one. Avoid interrupting it solely because it has passed a particular number of minutes or hours; no such cutoff is specified in the official guidance.
How to run Startup Repair and check its result
Open it from WinRE
- In the Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- If prompted on an encrypted device, enter the BitLocker recovery key.
- When the repair attempt ends, shut down the PC and turn it on again to check whether Windows starts.
Microsoft Learn documents the Startup Repair log at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. The Windows boot-issues troubleshooting guidance identifies this log as a place to review repair details.
Use installation media if the PC cannot reach WinRE
Installation media is an alternate route into WinRE, not a requirement for every repair. Microsoft’s instructions for creating Windows installation media call for a USB drive with at least 8 GB of space. Creating the media erases the drive’s existing contents, so use an empty drive or back up its files first. Boot the affected PC from the media, choose Repair your PC, and then navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.

What to try if Startup Repair cannot start Windows
Startup Repair is one option in WinRE, not a guaranteed recovery. Microsoft documents other choices, and the right one depends on the Windows version, what changed before the boot failure, and whether you can reach the relevant recovery environment. Back up important files before actions that may cause data loss whenever you can.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Recovery option | When it may help | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| System Restore | When a suitable restore point is available and restoring system state may undo a recent change. | Availability depends on the PC and its restore points. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions for your version of Windows. |
| Uninstall updates | When the boot problem followed a Windows update. | The relevant uninstall option and its availability depend on the update and recovery environment. |
| Reset this PC | When other recovery options have not resolved the issue and a reset is appropriate. | A reset can affect apps, settings, and personal files depending on the option chosen. Review Microsoft’s instructions and back up important files first. |
| Point-in-time restore or Quick Machine Recovery | For eligible Windows 11 releases and circumstances. | These options are not available on every Windows installation. Check Microsoft’s recovery overview for current eligibility and steps. |
| Reinstall Windows | When recovery tools cannot restore the installation. | Reinstallation may remove files, apps, or settings. Use Microsoft’s version-specific instructions and protect important files before proceeding. |
Microsoft’s recovery-options overview describes recovery choices and cautions about possible data loss; its Windows Recovery Environment overview explains the recovery tools available in WinRE. Options vary by Windows version and situation, so check the applicable instructions before choosing one.
