Limited work may take months; a major shipyard repair can last years, and the Navy may decide that a badly damaged boat is not worth repairing. The clock also depends on what “repair” means: initial damage control, assessment, transit to a shipyard, completion of the work, or return to operational service.
Why repair times vary
A submarine’s repair timeline is shaped by the damage and by the work needed to restore the boat—not simply by the time spent in dry dock. After an incident, the Navy may first stabilize the submarine and assess the damage, then carry out preliminary work before a more extensive shipyard period. Those stages can happen in different places and at different times.
Planned maintenance is different from an emergency repair. The Congressional Budget Office describes submarine maintenance as inspections, repairs, and parts replacement; large planned maintenance periods may take several months, and often run longer than scheduled. Labor availability and shipyard infrastructure capacity are major contributors to delay, according to the CBO’s 2021 report.
What public cases show
| Submarine | Damage and work | Publicly reported timeline | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| USS Connecticut | Collision while submerged in 2021; preliminary assessment and repairs in Guam, followed by extensive work in Puget Sound. | 31 months, notionally; planned return around early 2026. | The 31 months described a planned maintenance availability, not a verified completed repair. The return date was a 2023 schedule target. |
| USS San Francisco | Struck an undersea mountain in 2005. | 865 days in the shipyard. | A severe historical case, not a typical repair duration. The CBO also reported 294,000 labor days. |
| USS Miami | Severe fire in dry dock during an overhaul; repair was abandoned. | No completed repair duration. | The reported estimate rose from $450 million to $700 million as additional damage was identified; the Navy canceled the repair in 2013. |
USS Connecticut: a long repair with a planned endpoint
USS Connecticut struck an object while submerged on October 2, 2021. U.S. Pacific Command said the nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were unaffected, while damage elsewhere was still being assessed (statement). Naval News reported damage to the bow and lower rudder, and that the submarine received preliminary assessment and some repairs in Guam before traveling to Puget Sound (Naval News report).

In March 2023, Naval News relayed a NAVSEA spokesperson’s description of an FY23 Extended Docking Selected Restricted Availability as “notionally sized at 31 months duration” (March 2023 report). NAVSEA later said the availability began July 12, 2023, was scheduled to return the submarine to service around early 2026, and included an estimated $80 million in additional repairs (July 2023 report). These were plans and estimates issued in 2023; they do not establish when Connecticut actually returned to service.
USS San Francisco: an unusually severe grounding
After USS San Francisco struck an undersea mountain in 2005, it spent 865 days in the shipyard, according to the CBO’s 2021 report (CBO). The same source reported 294,000 days of labor. This case demonstrates how extensive a major repair can become, but it should not be treated as a baseline for other damage.

USS Miami: repair is not guaranteed
USS Miami caught fire in May 2012 while in dry dock during a 20-month overhaul. The Navy initially intended to repair it, but the reported cost estimate climbed from $450 million to $700 million as unanticipated damage was found. The Navy abandoned the repair in 2013, and the submarine was later decommissioned (Associated Press report via Connecticut Office of Military Affairs; additional report). The case has no repair duration because the work was not completed.
Why a planned schedule can change
A published duration is not the same as a completed repair time. The Connecticut figures were schedule targets, while the San Francisco figure records actual time in the shipyard. Fleet-wide figures also need careful interpretation: the Government Accountability Office reported in 2026 that attack submarines lost more than 15,000 operational days to maintenance delays and active idle time over fiscal years 2016–2025, with an estimated $3.4 billion spent sustaining submarines and crews that provided no operational capability (GAO report). Those numbers describe fleet-wide readiness effects, not the repair duration of a particular damaged submarine.

- Damage scope: An incident can require assessment and selective repairs or extensive structural work.
- Shipyard capacity: Available labor and infrastructure can affect when work begins and how long it takes.
- Endpoint: Finishing repairs, leaving the shipyard, and returning to service are different milestones.
- Repair decision: Cost, age, and newly discovered damage can lead the Navy to cancel a repair rather than complete it.
So how long should you expect?
For a general expectation, think in terms of months for many planned maintenance periods and potentially years for major damage repairs—not a single universal number. The public examples range from 865 actual shipyard days for USS San Francisco after a severe grounding, to a 31-month planned availability for USS Connecticut that was still a future target in the 2023 reporting. USS Miami shows why even that range cannot guarantee that a submarine will be repaired at all.
