Samsung phones do not all receive updates for the same length of time. The Galaxy S24 series is promised seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, counted from its global launch. Other Galaxy families have different commitments, so the exact model and market matter.
How long do Samsung phones get Android and security updates?
Samsung’s current general policy says Galaxy mobile devices can receive security-update support for up to seven years. That is an upper limit, not a promise that applies to every Galaxy phone. Samsung says availability and timing vary by product and market; device model, network provider and market can also affect update delivery.
Android OS upgrades and security updates are separate parts of a support commitment. An OS-upgrade term counts major Android generations; a security-support term describes how long Samsung may provide security updates. A phone can therefore have a stated number of OS generations and a separate security-support duration.

Samsung’s 2024 sustainability report says: “Starting in January 2024, we are extending security update support for Galaxy mobile devices up to 7 years to help Galaxy users enjoy the latest user experience more securely.” The report’s product- and market-dependent caveat matters: the general statement does not establish a seven-year term for every handset.

When does the support period start?
Galaxy S24 series
Samsung says the S24 series’ seven-year security term and seven OS-upgrade generations run from global launch—not from the date an individual owner buys or activates the phone. Buying later does not restart that clock.
Other Galaxy models
Do not infer a precise final update date from a family name alone. The reviewed Samsung guidance does not provide one worldwide end-of-support date for every handset and carrier variant, and older model commitments differ. Check the full model and local market information before relying on an estimated end date.

How to check whether your Galaxy is still supported
- Identify the exact phone. Record the complete Galaxy model or variant, not just the broad family name, and note the country or market where it is used.
- Check Samsung’s local software-update guidance. Find the support information for that model and region; schedules can vary by device, market and network provider.
- Check Samsung’s security-update scope. Confirm whether the exact model appears in the current scope and what update cadence is listed. Samsung support guidance gives monthly, quarterly and twice-yearly schedules as examples, depending on device and region.
- Keep the two terms separate. Look for the OS-upgrade count and security-support duration as distinct commitments. If the local source does not state a final date for your variant, do not calculate one from a different model’s launch date.
Why your update may arrive later than expected
A published support window describes the commitment, not necessarily the date every owner receives each update. Samsung says availability and timing can vary by product and market, and identifies the device model and network provider as factors. Its support guidance also shows that update cadence may be monthly, quarterly or twice yearly depending on the device and region. A rollout schedule for one Galaxy variant should not be assumed to apply to another carrier or market version.

Samsung’s published terms establish examples and upper limits, but they do not provide a complete, date-stamped worldwide end-of-support table for every handset and carrier variant. For a particular phone, its full model and local Samsung guidance are the reliable basis for checking whether it remains supported.
