There is no universal age when a hard drive becomes risky. Backblaze’s October 2025 analysis of 13 years of data found its observed age-related failure-rate peak at 10 years and 3 months, at a 4.25% annualized failure rate (AFR). That is a result for Backblaze’s data-center fleet—not an expiration date or a prediction for any one home drive.

What age-related failure data actually shows

Backblaze Drive Stats Team’s October 15, 2025 analysis revisited the familiar “bathtub curve”: early failures, a relatively calm middle period, then rising failures as drives age. The team found that pattern does not neatly describe its current fleet. Its 2025 age curve stayed fairly even through much of the observed lifespan, then rose more sharply among the oldest drives.

The age analysis groups drives by age in quarterly increments and reports annualized failure rates. These are rates for groups of drives, not the probability that a specific drive will fail during the next year.

Analysis Age at reported peak Peak AFR What the comparison means
2013 analysis, as reported in Backblaze’s 2025 revisit About 3 years and 3 months 13.73% An earlier fleet curve; the 2025 article reports this historical result.
2021 analysis, as reported in Backblaze’s 2025 revisit 7 years and 9 months 14.24% A later historical peak, still higher than the 2025 curve’s peak.
2025 analysis 10 years and 3 months 4.25% The peak occurred later and at a lower AFR than in the two earlier comparisons.

Backblaze also reported an AFR below 1.30% for drives aged zero to one year in the 2025 analysis. The figures describe the company’s observed drive population; they do not establish a consumer replacement age or guarantee how long an individual HDD will last. Why a fleet curve is not a forecast for your drive

Backblaze collects daily snapshots of operational drives in its data centers, including basic drive information and SMART statistics, and publishes quarterly statistics. Its operating environment and drive population differ from a typical home computer, NAS, or external backup drive. Backblaze’s reliability and test-data page explains its data and practical guidance.

Age is only one factor in the observed pattern. Backblaze notes that its fleet size, drive models and technologies, workload, bulk-purchase cohorts, qualification choices, and decommissioning practices changed over time. Drives removed while still working can also shrink the population at older ages without registering as failures. The oldest age groups contain fewer drives, so their rates should be read with that smaller sample in mind.

Consequently, these comparisons do not isolate aging as the sole cause of failure. Nor can they tell you the remaining life of a particular HDD. A drive’s model, workload, operating conditions, current health indicators, and the consequences of losing its data matter to an individual decision.

Fleet-wide AFR figures answer a different question

Backblaze’s calendar-year 2025 report covered 344,196 drives across 30 models that met its annual inclusion criteria, with a fleet AFR of 1.36%, down from 1.55% in 2024. Those figures summarize qualifying drives over a calendar year; they are not age-specific failure rates or a single-drive forecast. See Backblaze Drive Stats for 2025.

In a separate quarterly report, Backblaze reported a 1.73% AFR for Q2 2026, compared with 1.24% in Q1 2026, and a lifetime AFR of 1.41%. The report also noted that two of three models above its 6.95% outlier threshold were older models, while two had relatively small populations where a few failures could move the AFR substantially. These quarterly, annual, and lifetime measurements have different scopes, so they should not be treated as a single directly comparable trend. Read the Q2 2026 Drive Stats report.

How to decide what to do with an aging HDD

Use age as a reason to protect your data, not as a countdown to a guaranteed failure. Backblaze recommends regular backups, proper ventilation and stable temperatures, careful handling to avoid shocks, and monitoring SMART data for warning signs.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • If the drive is your only copy: Make a separate backup now. A second copy on another device or a suitable backup service protects you better than relying on the drive’s age or an AFR chart.
  • If SMART reports a warning or the drive behaves unusually: Treat the warning or symptom as a reason to prioritize a backup and assess the drive, rather than waiting for an age threshold.
  • If you are planning a replacement: Consider the drive’s condition, model, workload, ventilation and temperature, and how costly downtime or data loss would be. A drive with an important role and no independent backup deserves more urgent attention than an older drive whose contents are safely backed up.
  • If you use a NAS or a heavily used drive: Account for its workload and the impact of losing access; Backblaze’s data-center results do not establish a lifespan for a particular consumer or NAS model.

The available fleet data does not establish a universal consumer replacement age. The practical decision is whether your data is independently protected and whether the drive’s condition and role make continued use an unacceptable risk.
