There is no proven, cross-brand lifespan for foldable phone screens and hinges. Samsung says certain Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip hinges are designed for at least 200,000 opening-and-closing cycles—equivalent to more than five years at 100 cycles a day. That is a manufacturer durability statement, not a guarantee that a particular hinge, display, or phone will last that long.
How many folds can a foldable phone handle?
The clearest published number in the available manufacturer guidance is Samsung’s 200,000-cycle figure. Its wording varies by source and model, so it should not be treated as a universal rating for foldable phones.
- Samsung Korea, 2026: says ordinary-use hinge opening-and-closing durability is at least 200,000 cycles for the Galaxy Z Fold5, Fold6, Fold7, Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip5, Flip6, Flip7, and Flip8. - Samsung Philippines, 2023: says the Flex hinge in the Z Flip5 and Fold5 is designed for over 200,000 folding and unfolding cycles on average, and that the device should last more than five years if opened and closed 100 times daily. Samsung Philippines’ FAQ.
- Google Pixel Fold: Google describes manual and machine folding tests during hinge development, but publishes no cycle count or lifespan estimate in its article. Google’s Pixel Fold hinge article.
The five-year comparison is a usage-rate conversion: 200,000 cycles divided by 100 per day is 2,000 days, or roughly five and a half years. Samsung gives that comparison; it does not mean every user will reach that calendar lifespan. A cycle count describes repeated opening and closing under a manufacturer’s test or design criteria, not the service life of every part under every condition.
Samsung also announced a 200,000-fold testing target for the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, describing it as around five years of use at 100 folds a day. That was a claim about the 2019 model era, not evidence that every later foldable has the same rating. Samsung Newsroom US, March 28, 2019.

Does a crease or hinge fail after a few years?
The cited manufacturer pages do not establish an independent, cross-brand average failure rate or real-world service-life figure. They also do not establish that a flexible display will last as long as its hinge. A hinge-cycle claim should not be read as a lifespan promise for the screen, battery, or complete phone.
When comparing particular models, look for a published hinge figure and whether it is a test result, design target, or average claim. Also check the phone’s dust and water resistance and the test conditions behind those ratings, display-care instructions, local repair options and costs, warranty terms, and accidental-damage coverage. The cited sources do not provide consistent cross-brand data for those factors, so their cycle figures alone cannot support a brand lifespan ranking.

Is slight hinge movement or clicking normal?
Samsung’s guidance describes some movement and sounds as possible characteristics of the hinge design, but the advice applies to the models covered by each page—not to every foldable or every symptom.
- For the Z Flip5 and Fold5, Samsung Philippines says small curves or bends visible along the fold may result from screen construction and do not necessarily indicate a defect. It also describes minor frame-height differences or movement, and slight shifting, clicking, or snagging sensations during folding, as possible design-related behavior. Samsung Philippines’ FAQ.

These descriptions are not a remote diagnostic test. A suddenly worsening hinge, a new display problem, or visible damage should not be dismissed on the basis of general guidance; contact support for the exact model.

How can you protect a foldable’s hinge and screen?
Follow the instructions for the specific phone. Motorola explicitly warns Razr Fold owners that dust exposure can reduce hinge life and damage the display. Its support guidance recommends cleaning the screen with a dry, soft cloth and avoiding abrasive materials, bleach, and spraying cleaners directly onto it. Those directions should not be assumed to describe every foldable’s resistance or cleaning requirements. Motorola Razr Fold support.
Motorola’s support page also points Razr Fold owners to cases and accessories designed for that model. A case may protect exterior surfaces, but that page does not claim that a case extends hinge or inner-screen life. For any phone, check the manufacturer’s handling and display-protector instructions rather than assuming accessories or cleaning methods are interchangeable across models.

What to check before buying a foldable
- Whether the manufacturer publishes a hinge-cycle figure for the exact model, and how it characterizes that number.
- Dust and water resistance, stated test conditions, and warranty limitations.
- Inner-display construction and model-specific handling or protector guidance.
- Repair availability and cost in your region, plus warranty and accidental-damage coverage terms.
- Independent long-term ownership evidence, kept distinct from manufacturer test or design claims.
For repair, support, or care-plan options, verify current terms, costs, eligibility, and coverage for your phone and country with the manufacturer or local provider.
