There is no dependable number of years that applies to every cordless vacuum battery. Its useful life depends on the battery, how the vacuum is used, and how it is maintained and stored. To decide whether yours needs replacing, compare its runtime with its own normal performance using the same power mode and attachments, then follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance.
Battery life and runtime mean different things
Battery life is how long a battery remains useful over its service life. Runtime is how long one charge lasts in a particular mode and setup. A shorter runtime does not, by itself, prove the battery is failing: power mode, floor conditions and attachments can all affect how quickly a charge is used.
Manufacturers do not establish a universal service-life deadline. Dyson says battery life depends on factors such as maintenance and storage and “is not defined by a set number of years.” Bosch likewise explains that Li-ion battery capacity and runtime decrease as the battery naturally ages. Neither statement supplies a number of years or charge cycles that applies to all cordless vacuums.
How to tell whether the battery may be going bad
Compare like with like
Test the vacuum in a familiar everyday mode, with the same attachments and under similar cleaning conditions. Compare that result with the runtime you normally get—not with a headline maximum-runtime claim that may have been measured in a different configuration. Bosch says runtime varies with the vacuum’s configuration; its maximum-runtime figures are measured in Eco with the handheld alone and without an electrical nozzle.

Rule out other causes first
If runtime has dropped, use the troubleshooting steps for your exact model before buying a battery. A change seen only in Max or Boost, or only when using a power-hungry attachment, is weaker evidence of battery degradation than a persistent reduction in the same everyday setup. Dyson identifies reduced runtime outside Max/Boost as a possible sign that its battery needs replacing.
Look for model-specific indicators
Some manufacturers identify warning signals for particular products. For example, Dyson’s India guidance lists more than 12 flashing lights as a typical replacement sign for the devices covered by that guidance. Do not apply that indicator to other brands or assume it covers every Dyson model; check the support page or manual for your vacuum.

Why advertised runtime can be misleading
Runtime claims are meaningful only alongside the model, power mode and configuration used to obtain them. Bosch’s US FAQ lists these runtimes with the tube and nozzle fitted:
| Model | Eco | Turbo | Auto |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited 9 | 50 minutes | 10 minutes | 17 minutes |
| Unlimited 10 | 65 minutes | 11 minutes | 25 minutes |
These are Bosch US FAQ figures for the named models and tube-and-nozzle setup, not expected battery lifespans or a direct comparison with other brands. Bosch also gives higher maximum-runtime figures for Eco with the handheld alone and no electrical nozzle. Different setups make those figures unsuitable for judging whether another vacuum’s battery is worn.

- Replace battery
When to replace the battery
Consider replacement when runtime remains substantially below the vacuum’s usual performance in a consistent setup after you have followed the manufacturer’s troubleshooting advice. Check the manual or manufacturer support before ordering: the battery must match the exact appliance, and a covered machine may have warranty or support options.
Replacement intervals can be product-specific. A Dyson support page for one particular device recommends replacing that device’s rechargeable battery every five years and says to use the correct Dyson battery. That is not a five-year schedule for all cordless vacuums. Dyson’s US support page, accessed in 2026, says its cordless machines and parts—including the battery—carry a two-year warranty; verify the warranty terms and coverage for your product and region.

How to choose a compatible replacement
Do not choose a pack based only on appearance or a similar voltage. Confirm the part number and compatibility for your exact vacuum through the manufacturer’s model lookup or manual. For example, Bosch lists the BHZUB4AHUC as an exchangeable 18V, 4.0Ah battery accessory and provides an appliance compatibility check. Those specifications do not make it suitable for every cordless vacuum.
- Compatibility: confirm the exact appliance model and approved part number.
- Warranty and support: check whether the machine or battery is still covered and whether the replacement is manufacturer-authorized.
- Specifications: use the voltage, capacity and part number specified for your appliance.
- Runtime claims: compare claims only when mode and attachments match.
- End-of-life handling: check local recycling options and the battery maker’s instructions.
The available manufacturer information does not establish comparative quality, safety, durability or value for third-party packs, so it is not enough to rank aftermarket batteries against genuine replacements.

How to help a battery last
Care advice depends on the vacuum. Dyson recommends using Auto or Normal for everyday cleaning and reserving Max/Boost for short, intensive jobs, since frequent high-power use speeds battery degradation. For the Dyson vacuums covered by its guidance, it also recommends avoiding extreme temperatures, storing the vacuum between 18°C and 28°C away from direct sun and heat sources, and letting the machine cool after use before recharging.
Bosch’s user guidance for the appliance covered by its manual gives different limits: charge between 3°C and 40°C, store between 0°C and 40°C, and avoid storing the battery for an extended period fully charged or fully discharged. These are product-specific instructions, not universal temperature rules. Follow the manual for your model rather than mixing guidance from different manufacturers.
Recycle a worn battery correctly
Follow the vacuum maker’s disposal instructions and your local battery-recycling rules. Dyson says to remove its battery from the machine before disposal and recycle it in line with local ordinances or regulations; its US parts FAQ also points owners to local recycling or Dyson return options. Collection and return arrangements vary by location and product.
