A portable power station can run a refrigerator for hours or longer, but there is no universal runtime. Estimate it by dividing the station’s usable battery energy by the refrigerator’s average energy use. Then check separately that the station can handle the compressor’s startup demand.
Estimate refrigerator runtime from watt-hours
Use this planning formula:
Estimated runtime (hours) = battery capacity (Wh) × delivery-efficiency assumption ÷ refrigerator average load (W)
Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy and help estimate duration; watts (W) describe the rate of electricity use or output. A station’s inverter watt rating is not its battery capacity. If the refrigerator’s energy use is given in kilowatt-hours per day, convert it to average watts or use this equivalent:
Estimated runtime (hours) = usable station Wh ÷ refrigerator Wh per day × 24

Rated battery energy does not all necessarily reach an AC appliance: inverter losses and the station’s own idle consumption reduce what is available. Make the usable-energy factor an explicit assumption rather than treating the estimate as guaranteed. BLUETTI Canada and Anker SOLIX both describe the calculation and these practical limits in their guides: BLUETTI Canada and Anker SOLIX.
Example using daily energy consumption
Suppose a refrigerator uses 1.0 kWh per day (1,000 Wh/day), and a 1,000 Wh station is assumed to deliver 85% of its rated energy as usable AC energy. The estimate is 1,000 × 0.85 ÷ 1,000 × 24, or about 20.4 hours. This is a calculation under stated assumptions, not a measured result for every refrigerator or station.

QuietTechReport published calculated scenarios on August 23, 2026, using the same 85% delivery assumption. These figures are illustrative estimates, not independent performance tests:
| Station capacity | Refrigerator use | Calculated runtime at assumed 85% AC delivery |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 Wh | 0.8 kWh/day | About 25.5 hours |
| 1,000 Wh | 1.0 kWh/day | About 20.4 hours |
| 1,000 Wh | 1.5 kWh/day | About 13.6 hours |
| 1,000 Wh | 2.0 kWh/day | About 10.2 hours |
QuietTechReport’s 2026 estimate guide notes that heat, warm food, and frequent door openings can raise consumption, so actual results may differ.

Find the refrigerator’s average energy use
Measure over representative operation
The most useful appliance-specific input is cumulative energy use across multiple compressor cycles. If practical, connect the refrigerator through an appropriate plug-in energy meter and record Wh over a representative period; include a defrost event if possible. Divide the recorded Wh by the number of hours measured to get average watts. A momentary reading can catch the compressor running or stopped and give a misleading picture of typical use. BLUETTI’s guide recommends measuring consumption over time rather than relying on a brief reading.
Use an annual energy figure when you cannot measure
If the refrigerator’s model information or EnergyGuide label gives annual kWh, estimate daily use by multiplying by 1,000 and dividing by 365. Divide daily Wh by 24 to convert it to average watts. In the United States, the Department of Energy’s Refrigerator and Freezer Energy Rating Online Search Tool can search by appliance type, brand, model and year, and seal condition. Its November 10, 2023 page includes a 537 kWh-per-year estimate for a particular Amana freezer in good-seal condition; that is a specific database example, not a typical refrigerator figure.

Check that the station can start the compressor
Runtime math answers how long the stored energy might last. It does not tell you whether the inverter can start the refrigerator. Check the refrigerator’s running demand and startup requirement against the station’s continuous AC output and its surge or peak capability.
Jackery Support’s article, updated July 2, 2026, says startup surge is typically three to seven times rated power, with the actual amount varying by brand and model. Treat that range as manufacturer guidance, not a replacement for the exact appliance specification. Jackery also states: “Because of this, a portable power station can only run a refrigerator if the unit’s surge or startup power is within the power station’s rated output.” See Jackery Support’s refrigerator compatibility guidance.

A station can have sufficient inverter output to start the compressor but too little stored energy for the outage. Conversely, a large battery may still be unsuitable if its inverter trips when the compressor starts. Before relying on the setup, connect the refrigerator to the station and confirm that it operates through at least one compressor restart.
Account for conditions that change the estimate
Actual runtime depends on refrigerator consumption and station losses, which can shift with the setup and conditions. Factors include:
- Refrigerator efficiency, age, and condition.
- Ambient temperature, thermostat setting, and the temperature of food inside.
- How often and how long the door is opened.
- Compressor cycling and defrost operation.
- Fans, ice makers, or other refrigerator features.
- Other devices sharing the station, plus inverter conversion losses and station idle consumption.
For a long outage, plan for a reserve or a way to recharge rather than treating the calculated runtime as a safe cutoff. A compatible solar panel may help recharge a station in suitable sunlight, but the amount of runtime it adds depends on the station’s input compatibility and actual charging conditions.
Choose equipment for both duration and output
There is no one station size that suits every refrigerator and outage. Compare the appliance’s measured Wh per day or annual energy rating and its startup demand with the station’s usable battery Wh, continuous AC output, surge behavior, idle consumption, and conversion efficiency. Also consider recharge options, portability, and whether other loads will use the battery.

For food safety, power-station runtime is not the only deadline. An Anker SOLIX guide citing USDA guidance says an unopened refrigerator generally keeps food cold for about four hours. That is a food-safety decision point, not a power-station runtime estimate; follow local food-safety guidance for temperature and discard decisions. Keep the door closed as much as possible.
