LEONI acquired all shares of Swiss cable maker Studer Draht- und Kabelwerk AG on 31 July 2006. LEONI’s annual report records an acquisition cost of €104.3 million, including transaction costs; the announcement had reported a rounded agreed price of €105 million. Studer later left LEONI and returned to Swiss ownership in 2021.
When did LEONI acquire Studer, and how much did it pay?
LEONI announced an agreement to acquire Studer on 31 May 2006, subject to antitrust approval. It completed the acquisition of all shares on 31 July 2006, when Studer became fully consolidated. These are not competing accounts of two different prices: the announcement gave a rounded transaction value, while LEONI’s annual report stated the acquisition cost and identified transaction costs.
What did Studer manufacture?
Based in Däniken, Switzerland, Studer made halogen-free standard cables as well as flame-retardant and temperature-resistant special cables. Its products served demanding installations and equipment, including railway and highway tunnels, Swiss power utilities, rolling stock, airport and solar engineering, shipbuilding, and the sterilisation of industrial, pharmaceutical and medical products. Why was Studer strategically important to LEONI?
The acquisition gave LEONI access to specialised cable technology, Studer’s sales network and a stronger position in Switzerland. LEONI said the deal would also expand its capabilities in high-grade special-cabling systems. At announcement, Studer was reported to have generated €84 million in sales in 2005 and to employ 350 people, giving LEONI an established business alongside the specialist products and market presence. LEONI CEO Klaus Probst described the strategic rationale this way: “By acquiring Studer Draht- und Kabelerk AG, Leoni does not only strengthen its position in the Swiss market. We also improve our market position for high-grade special cabling systems and tap the technological skills of an innovative enterprise”. The statement appears in LEONI’s 2006 annual report.

What happened to Studer after LEONI sold it?
LEONI later sold the business. On 30 March 2021, a consortium led by Bruno Fankhauser and Helvetica Capital returned it to Swiss ownership, and the company began operating as Studer Cables AG. Studer Cables announced its return to independence and Swiss ownership.
