Yes. Kelvin’s water dropper can be miniaturised: instead of two gravity-fed streams falling into separate metal containers, a chip uses two microfluidic droplet generators, integrated electrodes and a pressure-driven flow. As droplets detach and pass the electrodes, electrostatic induction separates charge; the feedback between the two sides raises the voltage while the current remains very small.

The 2013 prototype demonstrated that picolitre droplets could become charged and then break up through electrohydrodynamic (EHD) instabilities. A 2018 follow-up built microfluidic Kelvin water droppers (MKWDs) with different channel sizes and flow rates and demonstrated electrowetting. These experiments show a controllable high-voltage effect, not a miniature general-purpose power supply.

What a Kelvin water dropper does

A Kelvin water dropper is a self-exciting electrostatic generator. It uses falling or emerging water droplets to transfer charge between two sides of a circuit. The essential ingredients are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Two streams of droplets produced from electrically connected liquid reservoirs or microfluidic generators.
  • Two induction electrodes positioned near the opposite streams.
  • Cross-connections that let charge induced on one side reinforce charge separation on the other.
  • A high-voltage collection point where charged droplets deliver their charge.

A tiny initial imbalance—caused by stray charge, surface conditions or electrical noise—is amplified. Charge on one side induces the opposite polarity near the other side’s nozzle or electrode. Droplets then leave carrying charge, which strengthens the field that charges the next droplets. The process continues as long as liquid flows and leakage does not drain the accumulated voltage faster than the dropper builds it.

The arrangement is electrostatic rather than electromagnetic. It can reach high voltage, but the available current is low. That distinction matters: a Kelvin dropper can charge a capacitor, trigger a spark or actuate an electrostatic device, but it is not a substitute for a battery, USB supply or motor power source.

How miniaturisation changes the classic design

In the classical apparatus, gravity pulls two water jets into droplets, and wires or metal cans provide the induction and collection electrodes. A microfluidic version replaces that bulky, gravity-fed geometry with small channels and controlled droplet generators fabricated into a chip or compact device.

Microfluidic droplet generators

Each side forms droplets at a controlled junction or outlet. The 2013 work reports droplets of several picolitres and a typical production rate around 103 droplets per second. Those figures describe the 2013 prototype; they are not universal specifications for every MKWD.

Integrated electrodes

Electrodes are placed in the chip layout so that a droplet passes an induction region before reaching its collection target or the next stage. The electrode does not need to touch the droplet to influence it: the electric field induces charge separation in the liquid and in nearby conductors.

Pneumatic driving

Instead of relying only on gravity, the chip-scale work uses pressure-driven microfluidic flow. Pumps or regulated pressure move liquid through the channels, allowing the operator to adjust flow and droplet timing. Pressure therefore supplies the mechanical input; electrostatic induction converts part of the droplet motion into electrical potential.

Step-by-step: how the on-chip cycle works

  1. Prepare two liquid paths. Fill the two microfluidic channels and remove air bubbles. The channels must remain hydraulically stable so both generators continue producing discrete droplets.
  2. Apply controlled pressure. Use the pneumatic arrangement specified for the device to drive liquid toward both droplet generators. The 2013 and 2018 studies treat flow rate as an operating variable, so pressure must be adjusted rather than assumed to be fixed.
  3. Generate droplets. At each generator, the continuous liquid stream breaks into individual droplets. In the 2013 prototype, droplets were several picolitres in volume and were produced at roughly 1,000 per second under a typical operating condition.
  4. Pass the induction electrodes. As a droplet moves past an electrode, the local electric field polarises the liquid and transfers net charge to the droplet. The two sides are wired so that the charge developed on one side promotes the opposite charge on the other.
  5. Collect and reinforce. Charged droplets arrive at their downstream targets or reservoirs. Their charge increases the electric field at the opposing generator, reinforcing the next cycle of induction.
  6. Monitor the high-voltage output. Measure voltage with an instrument designed for high impedance and use a current measurement that does not collapse the field. A low-current source can show a high open-circuit voltage while delivering little usable power.
  7. Control breakup or actuation. If the field becomes strong enough, electrical stress can overcome surface-tension forces and cause EHD breakup. In the 2018 implementation, the generated field was used to move liquid by electrowetting on dielectric surfaces.

What the 2013 microfluidic study actually demonstrated

Álvaro G. Marín and colleagues reported in Lab on a Chip (2013): “In this paper, we build a microfluidic water dropper and demonstrate that the droplets get charged and break up due to electrohydrodynamic instabilities.” The key result is the direct observation of charging and EHD breakup in a microfluidic implementation.

The reported droplets were several picolitres each, with a typical rate of about 103 droplets per second. A contemporary Chemistry World report put the prototype current on the order of 0.5 nA. That current is a report about the prototype, not a rating that can be applied to all channel designs, liquids or pressures.

The paper also compared observed charge behaviour with simulations. It discussed converting pneumatic pressure into electrical energy and using the charged droplets to control droplets, capsules or cells. Those are proposed applications discussed in the 2013 paper. The demonstrated findings are narrower: the device generated charged droplets and those droplets could break up under EHD forces.

What the 2018 follow-up added

The 2018 Micromachines study built MKWDs in-house and described them as “a low-cost but accurately controlled miniature device for high voltage generation.” Researchers characterised devices with different channel diameters and flow rates, then selected the best-performing configuration for an electrowetting demonstration.

Analytic model and validation

The study developed an analytic model for the liquid deformation produced by the electric field and compared its predictions with observed deformation. This matters because it links a design variable—such as channel geometry or flow condition—to a measurable interface response instead of treating the dropper as a black box.

Electrowetting endpoint

In electrowetting on dielectric surfaces, an applied electric field changes the apparent wetting behaviour of a liquid. The 2018 device used the MKWD’s high-voltage, low-current output to actuate liquid on such a surface. This is an actual demonstrated endpoint, unlike broader proposals for powering arbitrary electronics.

How the related 2014 ballistic design differs

A 2014 pressure-driven ballistic design is related but should not be confused with the 2013 microfluidic Kelvin dropper. It forces water through micropores under overpressure, creating jets that break into droplets. Electrostatic gates induce charge, and the droplets land on metal targets that accumulate high voltage.

The shared idea is pressure-assisted droplet formation followed by electrostatic charging. The geometry and operating sequence differ: the ballistic design uses micropores, jets and metal targets, whereas the 2013 MKWD uses two microfluidic droplet generators in a Kelvin-style cross-coupled arrangement. The 2014 work is therefore best described as a related energy-harvesting design, not a controlled head-to-head test of the 2013 or 2018 devices.

The papers were not a single controlled comparison. Differences in fluid, channel dimensions, pressure, electrode spacing and measurement method can change both voltage and current, so one row’s figure cannot be used as a universal benchmark for another.

Why the output is high voltage but low current

Each droplet carries only a small amount of charge, and the liquid flow is deliberately divided into discrete volumes. The induction feedback can raise the potential difference, but the charge transfer per unit time remains small. The conventional Kelvin dropper is therefore classified as a low-current source.

For a practical load, the relevant quantity is power, not voltage alone. Connecting a low-impedance load, a meter with unsuitable input resistance or a large uncharged capacitor can collapse the voltage. A high-voltage probe, an electrometer or a deliberately chosen capacitive load is more appropriate for characterising the device.

  • Good fit: electrostatic demonstrations, charging a small capacitor, triggering a spark under controlled conditions, electrowetting and other high-voltage, low-current actuation.
  • Poor fit: continuous lighting, charging phones, driving motors, powering digital logic directly or replacing a regulated supply.

What controls performance on a chip

Channel and nozzle dimensions

Changing the channel diameter alters hydraulic resistance, droplet volume and the electric-field geometry around the outlet. The 2018 study explicitly compared different channel diameters, so dimensions should be treated as design variables rather than copied from a single “standard” MKWD.

Flow rate and pressure stability

Pressure determines how quickly liquid reaches the generators and influences droplet formation. Pulsation, trapped air or unequal resistance between the two paths can make the streams asymmetric and weaken the induction feedback.

Electrode placement

The electrode must be close enough to provide a strong field but arranged so it does not short the liquid path or destabilise the desired droplet trajectory. Small changes in spacing can alter the field at the breakup point.

Fluid and surface condition

Conductivity, viscosity, surface tension, contamination and wetting of the channel walls all affect charging and breakup. A result measured with one liquid cannot automatically be transferred to another without checking these properties.

Leakage and insulation

Humidity, dirty dielectric surfaces, liquid films and measurement cables provide leakage paths. At nanoampere-scale currents, leakage can be comparable to the generated current, so insulation and guarding are part of the measurement system, not optional accessories.

Practical troubleshooting

No droplets form

  • Check for bubbles or a blocked generator.
  • Verify that both pressure paths are open and within the device’s operating range.
  • Inspect wetting at the outlet; a contaminated or excessively wet wall can prevent clean pinch-off.

Drops form but no voltage builds

  • Confirm that the two induction electrodes and cross-connections are wired with the intended polarity.
  • Look for unequal flow rates or a missing collection connection on one side.
  • Use a high-impedance measurement method and check for humidity or liquid bridges that leak charge away.

Droplets break up too early or not at all

  • Adjust pressure and flow gradually; breakup depends on the balance between electrical stress, inertia and surface tension.
  • Recheck electrode spacing and alignment.
  • Compare the observation with the operating regime used in the relevant study rather than assuming the 2013 rate or current applies to the new geometry.

The measured voltage falls when a meter is connected

This is expected when the meter or probe presents too much load. Use a higher-input-impedance probe, shorten exposed connections and measure after the device has reached a stable operating condition.

Safety and measurement boundaries

High voltage can produce a painful or dangerous shock even when current is limited, and a charged capacitor can release its stored energy suddenly. Enclose exposed electrodes, limit stored capacitance, provide a deliberate discharge path and use appropriately rated probes and insulation. Keep pneumatic equipment and conductive liquid handling physically separated from measurement electronics.

Do not infer safety from the reported 0.5 nA prototype current: that figure came from a contemporary secondary report and does not describe every operating condition. Stored energy, voltage, electrode geometry and accidental contact determine the hazard in a particular build.

What can a microfluidic Kelvin dropper be used for?

Demonstrating electrostatic induction

The compact geometry makes the charge-feedback loop easier to integrate with a microscope, camera or teaching setup than a large falling-water apparatus. The 2013 charging and breakup result provides a direct visual demonstration of electrohydrodynamics.

Electrowetting and liquid handling

The 2018 study demonstrated electrowetting on dielectric surfaces. Similar experimental systems may use the generated field to move or reshape small liquid volumes, but the exact electrode pattern and dielectric stack determine whether a given chip can reproduce that behaviour.

Droplet, capsule or cell control

The 2013 paper discussed controlling droplets, capsules or cells as possible applications. These should be treated as future application directions: the demonstrated result was charging and EHD breakup, not a validated product for biological manipulation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pressure-to-electric conversion research

Because pneumatic pressure drives the liquid while induction produces electrical potential, MKWDs offer a platform for studying mechanical-to-electrostatic conversion. Their low current limits the useful load, so experiments normally focus on sensing, actuation or charge accumulation rather than bulk power generation.

Is there a commercial chip or classroom kit?

The cited studies describe devices built for laboratory use and do not establish a standard commercial MKWD, current classroom kit or universal fabrication recipe. A practical build would require microfluidic fabrication, pressure control, high-voltage insulation, suitable electrodes and measurement equipment. Educational demonstrations and microfluidic fabrication supplies may exist as product categories, but a specific product should be verified for its actual geometry, voltage rating and safety documentation.

Bottom line for choosing this technology

A microfluidic Kelvin water dropper is a genuine chip-scale version of the Kelvin electrostatic generator. It replaces gravity-fed streams with pressure-driven droplet generators and integrated electrodes, then uses electrostatic induction to amplify charge as droplets pass through the device. The strongest published evidence is the 2013 demonstration of charged, EHD-unstable picolitre droplets and the 2018 demonstration of electrowetting with an in-house MKWD.

Use it when you need a compact, controllable, high-voltage and very-low-current source for electrostatic experiments or actuation. Do not specify it as a general power supply, and do not treat the reported droplet rate or nanoampere current as universal performance numbers.
