Photographic Styles change how an iPhone photo looks; ProRAW changes how much image information is available for later editing. Neither is a universal image-quality upgrade: the better choice depends on whether you want a finished look straight from the camera, more editing latitude, extra crop detail, or smaller files.
What Photographic Styles and ProRAW actually change
Apple describes Photographic Styles as a way to adjust specific colors in different parts of a photo and create a customized look. A selected style is applied to photos as you capture them, and supported iPhones let you preview and adjust style controls before taking the picture. Apple’s Photographic Styles guide describes this as image rendering—not a change to sensor resolution or a RAW capture format.
ProRAW is a capture format. Apple says it combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing, giving you more flexibility when editing exposure, color, and white balance. It uses DNG files and can be edited in Apple Photos or compatible third-party software. That added latitude is useful when you expect to develop an image, but it does not guarantee a sharper or better-looking result without editing. Apple’s ProRAW support article explains the format and its use.
| Question | Photographic Styles | ProRAW |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Choose the photo’s look at capture by adjusting color and other style characteristics. | Keep RAW information alongside iPhone processing for more editing latitude. |
| When it matters | The selected style affects the captured image; supported models also allow some later refinement in Photos. | Choose the capture format, then develop the DNG in a compatible editor. |
| Best fit | A consistent in-camera look with minimal post-processing. | Editing exposure, color, or white balance, or preserving more detail for cropping where supported. |
| Trade-off | Style controls and later editing options vary by iPhone model and workflow. | Files are much larger than HEIF or JPEG and need compatible software for predictable display. |
Do Photographic Styles reduce image quality?
Not inherently. A Style changes the rendering—such as the colors and tonal character you see—rather than adding sensor resolution. If you like the selected look, applying it during capture can save editing time and make photos more consistent. If you prefer a different rendering, the style may not suit that image, but that is a creative preference rather than evidence that the camera captured less detail.

Controls and post-capture options depend on the model. Apple’s guide says supported models can refine style values in Photos; for the latest-generation Styles covered by that guide, later Photos editing requires High Efficiency capture. The guide also documents tone, warmth or color, and intensity controls, with additional texture options such as Soft Skin, Glow, Film, and grain on iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple’s Photos editing guide covers supported editing workflows. Check your iPhone and iOS support before relying on a particular control, or assuming every style can be removed or edited in the same way.
Does ProRAW make photos sharper or better than HEIF?
ProRAW does not automatically make a photo sharper. It offers more information and editing flexibility, while sharpness and visible detail also depend on the camera, lens, focus, movement, lighting, and capture mode. Apple’s documentation does not establish a controlled comparison showing ProRAW or Photographic Styles is objectively superior in every scene.

- 【Shoot Like DSLR】This clip-on CPL filter kit from K&F CONCEPT includes a K&F CONCEPT Nano-K series CPL filter and a clip for phone, it is fit for travel shots, street photography, outdoor landscape, and time-lapse photography, Instagram, weddings, vacations, and other fun shooting, etc. For reflection reduction, keep the lens at 30–40° to the surface. For sky enhancement, shoot sideways (90°) to the sun. Adjust as needed. NOTE:Not compatible with iPhone 18 Pro & 18 Pro Max.
- 【K&F CONCEPT 52mm Nano-K Series CPL Filter 】Made by Japanese imported AGC glass, no effect on the image color, and restores the natural color. Adopt 18-layer MRC coating, which reduces reflection, and glare and improves color saturation and contrast. It only reduces glare, making reflections look clearer or darker, but not disappear. To fully remove them, change your angle or physically remove the reflective object.
- 【Enhance Color & Contrast】CPL filter can enhance the color and contrast, and remove non-metallic reflections such as water, and glass to show the true color, especially used in white cloud and blue sky photography. It only reduces reflections from non-metallic surfaces like glass or water. It has little effect on metal or mirrors. Please set realistic expectations.
- 【Widely Compatibility】The clip can be clamped on most smartphones to take pictures like a professional SLR camera. The 52mm CPL filter can also work with the DSLR cameras with ø 52mm lens thread. Please check the product images for compatible phone models.
- 【Quick Install & Easy Operation】Simply screw the filter on the phone clip, then clamp it on your phone, during a photo shoot, easily rotate the filter and adjust shoot angle to get the best polarizing effect. Please check whether it is compatible with your mobile phone.
On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple says 48-megapixel ProRAW retains more detail and offers more flexibility for cropping than 12-megapixel ProRAW. These options are conditional: Apple documents 48 MP capture only for main-camera 1× photos in that generation. Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos are limited to 12 MP in the support article, and resolution can change when zoom, Night mode, or flash is used. Check the current instructions for your device rather than assuming 48 MP is available for every shot. Apple’s ProRAW guidance lists these constraints.
For routine sharing, HEIF or JPEG may be more convenient. ProRAW’s advantage is editing latitude, not a promise that an unedited DNG will look better on every screen or in every app. If an app does not support ProRAW well, it may display the file differently than expected. Photos and other compatible software provide a more predictable editing experience; an original can be shared as DNG, while a photo edited in Photos may be shared as a rendered JPEG.

Why ProRAW files are so large
RAW files preserve more image information for later adjustment, which requires more storage. Apple’s April 19, 2024 support article estimates a 12 MP ProRAW image at about 25 MB and a 48 MP ProRAW image at about 75 MB. Apple says ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG files. These are approximate figures, not guaranteed sizes for every photo.
That difference can add up quickly in a large library. Apple warns that ProRAW can fill iPhone storage and that keeping the files in iCloud Photos may require a larger iCloud storage plan. Use ProRAW selectively if you want its editing or cropping latitude without making every everyday image a large DNG.

Which should you use?
- Choose a Photographic Style when you want a particular color or tonal look applied as you shoot, and do not need a RAW-based editing workflow.
- Choose ProRAW when you expect to adjust exposure, color, or white balance, or need the supported higher-resolution option for cropping.
- Use HEIF or JPEG when compact files and straightforward sharing matter more than extensive post-capture adjustment.
- Check your model and capture mode before expecting a specific Style control, post-capture refinement, or ProRAW resolution. Apple documents ProRAW for iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models running iOS 14.3 or later in its April 19, 2024 article, while newer resolution options and mode limits are model-specific.
- Plan the editing and sharing path before shooting ProRAW: use an app that supports DNG/ProRAW, and decide whether you need to deliver the original DNG or an edited JPEG.
Photographic Styles and ProRAW are not mutually exclusive quality settings. One is primarily a way to shape the image’s look; the other is a format choice for editing flexibility. Choose based on the final image you want and the storage and editing workflow you are willing to manage.
