Intel Agilex 7 uses a dedicated R-Tile I/O chiplet, connected to the FPGA fabric through EMIB, to provide hardened PCIe 5.0 and CXL connectivity. That lets a compatible FPGA communicate coherently with a host processor or other devices—but actual shared-memory and pooling capabilities depend on the specific FPGA, CXL implementation, host platform, firmware and software.

What is a chiplet-based FPGA for CXL?

It is an FPGA built from more than one silicon die, or chiplet, with different parts handling different jobs. In Intel Agilex 7, the programmable FPGA fabric is joined to the R-Tile interface chiplet using Intel’s Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB). R-Tile handles high-speed external connectivity, including hardened PCIe 5.0 and CXL functions, while the FPGA fabric remains available for application logic.

This is a specific Agilex 7 architecture, not a general description of every chiplet FPGA. The design places high-speed I/O circuitry in a specialized chiplet instead of requiring all of it to be implemented in programmable logic.

What CXL adds to the FPGA connection

Compute Express Link (CXL) is built on PCIe and provides cache- and memory-coherent communication among supported host CPUs, FPGAs and other accelerators. Coherency can let the processor and a device coordinate access to data without treating every transfer as a separate, unmanaged copy. The exact capabilities depend on the CXL version and device mode implemented.

Electronic Design’s 2023 coverage describes Agilex 7 R-Tile support for CXL Type 1 and Type 2 with DCOH, as well as Type 3, with endpoint and root-port options. Intel’s 2025 device overview describes hardened CXL IP, selected CXL 1.1 and 2.0 support, and soft logic for Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3 devices. These are implementation options, not a claim that every Agilex 7 part supports every mode or configuration.

What the R-Tile chiplet does

R-Tile supplies the FPGA with hardened PCIe 5.0 and CXL interfaces. “Hardened” means the interface function is implemented as dedicated silicon rather than built entirely from configurable FPGA logic. That can leave more programmable fabric for the design itself, while the FPGA designer still needs to select and integrate the supported IP and device configuration.

Electronic Design reported that R-Tile contains sixteen 32-Gb/s transceivers and supports PCIe 5.0 and the CXL options described above. Separately, Intel’s 2025 Agilex 7 product brief lists up to 116 Gbps transceivers across product families. Those figures describe different coverage or measures and should not be treated as interchangeable per-lane throughput claims.

Intel’s 2025 brief also lists Agilex 7 family options with up to 4 million logic elements and up to 32 GB of HBM2e. Electronic Design reported up to 485 Mb of memory for Agilex 7 in 2023. These are family-level maximums from different sources, not specifications for one guaranteed device; check the exact part and board for its logic, on-chip memory, HBM2e or DDR5 configuration.

How CXL generations affect expansion and pooling

CXL version Relevant capability established here What it means for an FPGA system
CXL 1.1 Intel describes selected Agilex 7 implementations with CXL 1.1 support. Confirm the exact device IP and host-platform support; the cited product information does not establish pooling support for every 1.1 configuration.
CXL 2.0 The CXL Consortium’s 2020 specification announcement adds switching, fan-out, memory pooling and persistent-memory support. These features can support shared or expanded memory infrastructure, but the FPGA and the rest of the system must implement and support the relevant functions.
CXL 3.0 The specification extends fabric operation while retaining backward compatibility. Do not infer that an Agilex 7 implementation supports CXL 3.0 from the generation’s existence; verify the specific product and IP documentation.

CXL 2.0 is the generation most directly relevant to memory pooling. The Consortium’s 2020 description says switching provides fan-out to more devices, while pooling can improve memory utilization and make capacity available on demand. That describes capabilities of a CXL system, not an automatic property of any FPGA that has a CXL connection.

Can an FPGA share coherent memory with a Xeon?

It is possible in principle when the Agilex 7 device, its CXL IP, the Xeon platform and the system software support a compatible coherent configuration. The product architecture makes the connection possible; it does not establish compatibility with every Xeon generation or guarantee that a particular application can use host and FPGA memory as one seamless pool.

Before designing around shared memory, verify the exact Agilex 7 part and CXL device mode, the CXL IP revision, the Xeon model and platform firmware, and operating-system support. Also check that the intended memory device or expander is compatible with the topology. A device’s advertised CXL support alone is not sufficient evidence that the complete system will enumerate and operate as intended.

When CXL memory expansion or pooling is useful

CXL can be useful when a workload needs more memory capacity, wants to improve utilization across devices, or benefits from coherent access between a host processor and an accelerator. CXL 2.0 switching and pooling can make memory capacity more composable than a fixed, directly attached configuration. Whether this is worthwhile depends on the access pattern, latency and bandwidth requirements, and system design; the cited specifications do not establish a universal performance improvement.

For an Agilex 7 design, compare the proposed CXL topology with local FPGA memory and conventional host-attached memory. Check the following before choosing an implementation:

  • Device and protocol: Match the exact FPGA, CXL generation, device type and IP revision to the intended host and attached devices.
  • Link and topology: Confirm PCIe lane configuration, link speed, endpoint or root-port role, and whether switches are required.
  • Memory and logic: Compare the particular FPGA’s logic, DSP and on-chip memory resources, plus its HBM2e or DDR5 options, against workload needs.
  • Platform readiness: Verify host processor support, firmware, operating-system behavior, device compatibility, and the available FPGA software and IP stack.
  • System trade-offs: Evaluate reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS), security, board availability, power and total system cost alongside capacity and performance goals.

Altera’s data-center portfolio positions R-Tile for PCIe 5.0 and CXL alongside F-Tile Ethernet and E-Tile options, and highlights its Open FPGA Stack, P4 Suite and FPGA AI Suite. These offerings can matter when assessing design and software maturity, but their presence does not replace compatibility checks for a particular CXL system.

What is established about Agilex 7 CXL availability?

Intel announced the Agilex 7 R-Tile in May 2023 and later reported volume shipment of R-Tile CXL IP with CXL 2.0 features. That establishes that the capability progressed beyond a purely conceptual chiplet architecture. It does not establish the availability, qualification status or configuration of every FPGA board or CXL memory product; those details must be checked for the specific design.
