Instagram’s AI recommends Reels to viewers based on predictions about what they may find valuable; Meta does not say that it gives each creator a personalized prompt for what to make next. Creators can use Trial Reels to share an idea with non-followers first and see how it reaches beyond their existing audience.
Two different things: recommending Reels and testing ideas
“Suggest what to create next” can mean two separate processes. Instagram’s recommendation systems choose content for viewers. Trial Reels give creators a way to test a video with people who do not follow them. Meta’s public explanations describe the first process and the testing feature, but do not establish that Instagram analyzes an individual creator’s Reels and then tells that creator what topic to make next.
| Mechanism | Whose experience it affects | What it does | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommendations | Viewers | Predicts which content a person may find valuable and recommends content, including Reels from accounts they do not follow. | What Instagram may show a viewer; Meta does not publish a creator-specific next-topic prompt or a complete current formula. (Meta, June 2023) |
| Trial Reels | Creators and non-followers who see their test Reel | Shares a Reel with non-followers first, so a creator can explore how an idea performs beyond their existing audience. | How the tested video reaches that audience; performance is not guaranteed. (Instagram, June 2025) |
How Instagram’s AI recommendations work
Meta describes its systems as making predictions about how valuable a piece of content may be to a particular person. Those predictions can help determine whether content is shown and when. The systems combine multiple predictions with behavioral signals and feedback, including survey feedback; Meta gives sharing as one example of an action that may indicate interest. It does not describe one prediction as a perfect measure of value.
The public explanation covers Feed, Reels, Stories and other surfaces, including recommendations from accounts a viewer does not follow. It does not provide a complete, current list of Reels-specific signals, their relative weights, or a fixed ranking formula. Meta also says it withholds some details about signals used to reduce harmful or low-quality content because disclosure could help people evade those protections. (Meta’s explanation of AI ranking)

Viewer activity and feedback can shape recommendations
What a person watches and does in Meta’s apps can inform predictions about what they may want to see. Meta announced that, starting December 16, 2025, it would begin using interactions with its generative AI features to personalize content and ad recommendations—including posts and Reels—in most regions. That is a viewer-personalization signal, not evidence of a system that briefs creators on their next subject. (Meta, October 2025)
Original-content figures are a dated US snapshot
Meta reported that original posts made up 75% of Instagram recommendations in the United States in Q4 2025, describing that as a 10-percentage-point increase in the prevalence of original content there. These are Meta-reported figures for one market and quarter; they do not establish a universal rule for every account, Reel or future period. (Meta, January 2026)

How to use Trial Reels to explore an idea
Trial Reels are a practical way to try a creative direction with an audience beyond your followers. Instagram said it made the feature available to everyone in June 2025. The feature provides an opportunity to observe how a test video reaches non-followers; it is not a promise that a particular subject or format will gain reach.
- Choose an idea you want to test. Treat the Reel as an experiment in reaching people who do not already follow you, rather than as a guaranteed route to growth.
- Share it as a Trial Reel. Instagram describes Trial Reels as being shown to non-followers first.
- Use what you observe to inform your next creative choice. A response to one test can help you decide what to explore, but it does not reveal Instagram’s full ranking logic or guarantee the same outcome for another Reel.
In an internal analysis of more than 400,000 creators who were actively producing Reels before and after trying Trial Reels, Meta reported that 40% posted Reels more often after trying the feature. Among those who posted more often, 80% saw increased reach from non-followers. The analysis compared the month after first use with the month before adoption and controlled for confounding factors; Meta cautions that the figures indicate possible performance, not a guarantee. How viewers can shape or reset recommendations
Viewers have controls for expressing preferences and changing what appears in recommendations. Instagram’s documented reset path is Profile → More options → Content preferences → Reset suggested content. Instagram says recommendations personalize again over time based on the content and accounts a person interacts with. The app’s labels or path may change; check current settings if yours differs.
- Interested / Not interested: Give direct feedback on suggested content.
- Hidden Words: Set words or phrases to help filter content.
- Following Feed and Favorites: View content through these more directed feed options.
- Why Am I Seeing This? On Reels and Explore, Instagram’s explanation can show how past activity may have informed a recommendation.
Instagram documented the reset and these controls in its announcement updated July 14, 2025. (Instagram’s recommendations reset guide)

What the evidence does—and does not—say
Meta’s public descriptions support a clear distinction: recommendation AI predicts what viewers may value, while Trial Reels let creators test distribution to non-followers. The published material does not disclose the live model’s complete signals or weights, nor does it establish a personalized feature that tells a creator what subject to make next. A creation app such as Meta’s Edits may help produce videos, but Meta’s announcement does not say that it reveals ranking signals or predicts which topic will succeed.
