Insomniac made Spider-Man’s swing feel fast by combining pendulum-like motion with player-controlled releases, momentum-friendly web connections, smooth links to other traversal moves, and camera and animation cues that sell speed. The goal was not a perfect rope simulation: it was a swing that felt recognizably physical, quick to learn, and worthy of a superhero.
Start with a swing, not flight
Insomniac’s starting point was a web attached to city geometry and a physics-based arc. In early grey-box prototypes, the team used core pendulum physics to establish the feel. As game director Ryan Smith put it, “It needed to be like swinging, not flying.” Game Developer’s 2018 interview with Smith describes how the web line’s direction helped shape the path: a line extending off to the side could turn Spider-Man, while a more vertical line supported a straighter trajectory.

That physical starting point gave the movement a legible cause and effect. Spider-Man is tethered to a building or other structure, and his arc responds to the connection; the game then adjusts the experience so that the tether supports purposeful travel rather than becoming a strict simulation exercise.
Give players control over momentum
A swing’s release is a decision, not just the end of an animation. The player can choose when to let go, changing the direction and shape of the momentum that carries Spider-Man onward. Releasing at the end of a swing and pressing jump can launch him forward; releasing earlier can send his movement downward. The timing lets players steer the overall route through the city without needing to control every physical detail.

Insomniac also chose web attachment points on buildings and trees to preserve momentum and help Spider-Man continue toward his destination, according to its 2018 PlayStation.Blog technical interview. That combination matters: player timing determines how momentum is used, while the selected connection helps keep a swing useful for forward traversal.
Make speed visible as well as physical
Movement alone does not determine how fast a game feels. Insomniac used camera behavior, field of view, character animation, and visual effects to reinforce the sense of power and speed. The camera can roll in response to the web connection; field-of-view changes and effects emphasize boosts from web-zips and point launches. The GDC Vault description of Insomniac’s 2019 traversal session likewise identifies camera design as part of making traversal feel faster, more powerful, and more enjoyable.

This is not a claim that the camera makes Spider-Man move faster in a measured sense. It makes changes in movement easier to perceive and gives boosts a stronger visual impact. Insomniac Director of Core Mike Fitzgerald explained the design trade-off in the PlayStation interview: “if we perfectly simulated the dynamics of a person hanging from a rope on 34th Street, the player wouldn’t feel much like a Super Hero.” Camera, field of view, and animation help bridge the gap between plausible motion and the intended fantasy.
Connect swings into a continuous traversal system
The swing is one part of a chain of movement options. Web-zips provide quick changes of direction; point launches from objects such as lampposts and water towers add momentum; wall-runs and other moves connect into and out of swings. Smith said Insomniac spent many iterations smoothing these transitions so players could build and maintain momentum rather than repeatedly stopping to restart a move.

This integration gives players more ways to recover or redirect a route. A swing can lead into a zip, a launch can renew speed, and a wall-run can carry movement along a building before another swing. The design emphasis is on readable transitions and flow, not on treating each traversal move as an isolated mechanic.
Build the city to support the target speed
Insomniac built detailed areas at real-world scale to establish target movement speeds and environmental scale cues. The city and streaming systems then had to support those speeds. In the 2018 PlayStation.Blog interview, Fitzgerald reported approximately 800 tiles in Insomniac’s version of Marvel’s New York, each 128 meters square, with about one new tile loaded per second at Spider-Man’s top speed. These are developer-reported figures for the 2018 PS4-era game, not specifications for every later edition.

- Miles morales discovers explosive powers that set him apart from his mentor, peter parker. Master his unique, bio-electric venom Blast attacks and covert camouflage power alongside spectacular web-slinging acrobatics, gadgets and skills.
- a war for control of Marvel's new York has broken out between a devious Energy Corporation and a high-tech criminal army. With his new home at the heart of the battle, miles must learn the cost of becoming a hero.
- Traverse the snowy streets of his new, vibrant and bustling Neighborhood as miles searches for a sense of belonging. When the lines blur between his personal and crime-fighting lives, he discovers who he can trust, and what it feels like to truly be home.
That technical work supports the illusion in a practical way: the environment must keep arriving as Spider-Man crosses it quickly, while its scale gives the player visual reference points for judging motion. A convincing sense of speed depends on both the movement system and a city capable of keeping up with it.

Insomniac’s aim was for players to feel like Spider-Man quickly, and to feel even more capable as they learned the system. Smith described internal and PlayStation lab playtesting followed by years of feedback, adjustment, simplification, and iteration. He called the effort to turn a developer-playable prototype into a traversal system that worked for all players a multi-year process.

How the approach continued in Spider-Man 2
Later-series coverage of Spider-Man 2 describes Insomniac continuing to balance enhanced physics and natural forces with player-controlled forces. It also reports that playtesting prompted changes to web-wing controls so players would engage with that traversal feature more readily. That account shows the broader design concern continuing, but web-wing details belong to the later game and do not describe how the original 2018 swing was implemented. Game Developer’s 2024 account of Spider-Man 2’s traversal covers that later context.
