For most direct clients, start by comparing Wise Business and Payoneer receiving details, then compare the live INR conversion quote—not just the advertised transfer fee. Ask a US client whether it can pay by domestic ACH or local account transfer, and ask an EU client whether it can send EUR to EUR receiving details. These routes can avoid some international-wire costs. PayPal is convenient but publishes a materially higher international receiving charge for India. A direct bank or SWIFT receipt remains possible through your authorised dealer bank, with charges and exchange rates set by that bank.
Your real cost is the amount that reaches your Indian account after the provider fee, foreign-exchange spread, fixed charges, correspondent or receiving-bank fees, and applicable taxes. Fees, supported currencies, compliance checks and RBI authorisations can change, so obtain a current quote before accepting a large or recurring invoice.
What actually determines the lowest-cost payment route
There is no single cheapest service for every freelancer. The result changes with currency, invoice size, payment rail, transaction frequency, marketplace involvement, account status and the bank that finally credits your INR account.
- Client rail: Domestic ACH or a local account transfer can cost less than an international wire. Card payments are usually priced differently from bank transfers.
- Provider charge: This may be a percentage, a fixed amount, a receiving fee, a withdrawal fee or an annual account fee.
- Foreign-exchange conversion: A narrow-looking transfer fee can be offset by a wide USD/INR or EUR/INR spread. Compare the quoted rate with a reference market rate at the same time.
- Bank and correspondent charges: SWIFT payments can involve intermediary deductions before your Indian bank posts the credit.
- Documents and timing: An eFIRC, FIRC or FIRA trail can matter for export records and bank queries. A slightly more expensive route may be preferable if it supplies usable remittance evidence quickly.
- Operational risk: KYC reviews, account holds, refund rules and support quality affect the cost of a failed or delayed payment.
For each candidate route, calculate: INR credited = foreign amount − provider fees − bank/correspondent fees, converted at the provider or bank’s actual rate, plus or minus any tax charged on the service fee. Make that calculation for the exact invoice amount rather than relying on a headline percentage.

Published fee facts for the main options
The following figures are published rates or statements and should be checked again at the time of payment. They are not a guaranteed quote for your account.
| Option | Published pricing or rate information | Useful capabilities for an Indian freelancer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise Business | Conversion fees depend on the currency. Wise says Wise Business uses one transfer fee and the mid-market exchange rate; its comparison describes PayPal’s exchange-rate fee as 3–4% as a directional comparison. | India business customers can receive money and convert to INR; Wise provides an eFIRC for every transfer. Account details were rolling out for eight currencies, including USD, GBP and EUR. | The exact fee depends on currency, amount and route. Wise announced RBI in-principle approval to operate as a Payment Aggregator-Cross Border for exports on 2025-06-03; account-detail availability is being rolled out. |
| Payoneer | 2.90% + $0.49 for credit-card client payments; 1% for US ACH debits; 1–4% for withdrawing a different currency to an Indian bank. | Advertises integrations with more than 2,000 marketplaces and networks. India customer balances are automatically withdrawn to the local bank within 48 hours. | A US$29.95 annual fee applies when less than US$6,000 is received in any 12 consecutive months. Marketplace fees are set by each marketplace. |
| PayPal India | 4.40% plus a fixed fee for receiving payments from outside India. | Widely recognised by clients and useful when the payer insists on PayPal. | Include the receiving charge and any exchange-rate spread in your quote. The fixed-fee amount depends on the transaction details. |
| Authorised dealer bank/SWIFT | Charges and exchange rates are bank-specific. | Direct receipt into your Indian bank account and a conventional bank remittance trail. | Intermediary-bank deductions, documentation requests and slower crediting can vary by bank, currency and correspondent route. |
Wise states, “We charge GST only on the Wise fees.” That statement concerns the provider’s fees, not the GST, LUT, TDS or export-of-services position of your freelance business.
Best workflow for a US client paying by ACH or account details
A US client may be able to pay a domestic ACH or a local receiving account instead of initiating an international wire. Ask the client’s accounts-payable team which method its bank supports and whether it can use the account details supplied by your payment provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm the invoice currency and rail. State whether you want USD received first or want conversion to INR. Ask whether the client can send domestic ACH, a local transfer or only an international wire.
- Generate receiving details. In Wise Business or Payoneer, check whether USD receiving details are available for your account and whether the client’s payment type is accepted. Do not substitute personal-account details if the provider requires business details.
- Compare the live quote. Enter the invoice amount, the expected receipt date and the destination INR account. Record the provider fee, quoted exchange rate, estimated INR and any bank charge shown.
- Send precise payment instructions. Include your legal name or business name exactly as displayed, account number, routing or transfer information, reference and invoice number. A mismatch can trigger a manual review or return.
- Save the evidence. Keep the invoice, contract, delivery proof, provider receipt, conversion statement and Indian bank credit advice. Download the eFIRC or other remittance document when available.
- Reconcile the credit. Match the amount received to the invoice after fees and note the conversion date and rate in your bookkeeping.
Payoneer’s published 1% US ACH debit rate can be attractive for that rail, but compare it with the total cost of a Wise quote for the same amount. The cheaper percentage is not automatically the cheaper outcome if the FX rate or withdrawal charge differs.

How to handle EUR payments from an EU client
For an EU payer, first ask whether the client can send EUR to EUR receiving details. Receiving in the invoice currency can avoid an unnecessary conversion before you decide when and where to convert.
- Invoice clearly in EUR. State the beneficiary name, invoice number and whether the client should use a local transfer or another supported method.
- Check EUR receiving availability. Verify that your Wise Business or Payoneer account can receive EUR for your country and account type. Availability can change during rollouts and compliance reviews.
- Compare two outcomes. Price (a) receiving EUR and converting through the provider and (b) receiving through your authorised dealer bank. Record the rate, all fees and the expected INR credit for each.
- Ask about payer-side charges. An EU client may see a different fee for a local transfer, international transfer or card payment. Agree in writing who bears any payer-side charge.
- Retain remittance records. Keep the EUR payment confirmation, provider conversion record and eFIRC/FIRC/FIRA or bank advice linked to the invoice.
Do not assume that “free receiving” means free conversion. The conversion spread and any withdrawal charge can be the largest cost on a EUR-to-INR payment.
When Payoneer makes more sense
Marketplace and platform income
Payoneer advertises integrations with more than 2,000 marketplaces and networks, which can simplify withdrawals from platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, Deel and similar services. The platform’s own commission, withdrawal fee and currency conversion rules are separate from Payoneer’s charges. Check both schedules before accepting work.
Clients that need local receiving accounts
A client may be comfortable paying a local receiving account but unwilling to complete an international wire. Payoneer can provide receiving-account functionality where your account is eligible. Confirm the permitted payment type and the beneficiary details shown in your dashboard.

Withdrawal timing and annual-fee threshold
Payoneer says India customer balances are automatically withdrawn to the local bank within 48 hours. It also lists a US$29.95 annual fee when less than US$6,000 is received in any 12 consecutive months. A freelancer with occasional small invoices should include that possible annual charge in the effective cost.
When PayPal is still practical
PayPal can be the simplest answer when a client already has a PayPal workflow or refuses another rail. PayPal India lists a 4.40% plus fixed-fee charge for receiving payments from outside India. Wise’s comparison describes PayPal’s exchange-rate fee as 3–4%; treat that as a directional provider comparison, not a guaranteed quote for your transaction.
Before sending a PayPal payment link, add the receiving charge and likely FX spread to your commercial calculation. You can either include the cost in your rate or agree that the client will pay it, subject to the contract and the client’s procurement rules. Withdraw promptly according to your account’s India requirements, and save the transaction receipt and bank-credit evidence.

- Provide the signed contract and invoice before the first payment if the bank requests them.
- Use the exact purpose or remittance code requested by the bank.
- Ask whether the bank will issue an FIRC, FIRA or another export-remittance document.
- Confirm who bears intermediary fees and whether the client must send charges as “OUR” rather than shared or beneficiary-paid, where that option is available.
- For recurring receipts, request a current quote at your expected monthly volume; bank pricing and FX spreads can change.
Because direct-bank charges are bank-specific, compare the final INR credit—not only the wire fee—with a provider’s live quote.

RBI FEMA rules permit export receipts in freely convertible currency through permitted channels. RBI also states that a resident with foreign exchange due or accrued must take reasonable steps to realise and repatriate it to India, subject to applicable rules and exemptions. Your authorised dealer bank can tell you which purpose code, timeline and documents apply to your transaction.

A repeatable comparison method
Use the same data for every provider so that the result is comparable:
- Enter the identical invoice amount and currency.
- Select the same destination Indian bank account and conversion date.
- Record the provider fee, fixed fee, FX rate, withdrawal fee and tax on the provider fee.
- Add any client-side, correspondent or receiving-bank charge that you will bear.
- Record the expected time to bank credit and the remittance document supplied.
- Check marketplace deductions separately from payment-provider deductions.
- Repeat the quote at your normal monthly volume and at a large-invoice amount; volume tiers or account status can change the result.
Keep a simple spreadsheet with columns for invoice currency, payment rail, foreign amount, provider fee, FX rate, bank fee, INR credited, credit date and document reference. Review it after each real payment. A route that appears cheapest on one small transfer may lose its advantage when a fixed fee, annual fee or different-currency withdrawal applies.
Decision guide by situation
- Direct US client with ACH: Compare Wise Business and Payoneer USD receiving details, then choose the route with the higher net INR credit and acceptable documentation.
- Direct EU client with EUR: Compare EUR receiving and conversion quotes, and ask the client whether a local transfer is available.
- Marketplace earnings: Start with the marketplace’s supported withdrawal integrations, then add the platform’s fee to the provider’s fee and FX cost.
- Client insists on PayPal: Treat PayPal as a convenience fallback and price in the 4.40% plus fixed-fee receiving charge and FX spread.
- Large or recurring invoices: Request live quotes from Wise, Payoneer and your authorised dealer bank, including any volume pricing and bank charges.
- Documentation-sensitive export: Prefer the route that reliably supplies an eFIRC/FIRC/FIRA or bank advice that your accountant and bank accept, even if its headline fee is not the lowest.
Common failure points and fixes
The client sent the wrong rail
A domestic ACH instruction cannot always receive an international wire, and a local receiving account may reject unsupported payment types. Ask the provider what rail is accepted, then have the client cancel or amend the payment before it is returned.

Use the exact beneficiary name and reference shown in your account. Send the provider’s payment instructions unchanged and keep the invoice number in the transfer memo when permitted.
The INR credit is lower than expected
Compare the provider receipt, FX rate, withdrawal fee, correspondent deduction and Indian bank advice. A percentage fee may not explain the full difference; a separate bank or currency-conversion charge may have been applied.
A payment is held for KYC
Respond with the contract, invoice, service description, client details and delivery evidence. Do not create duplicate accounts or repeatedly resend the same payment while a review is open; that can complicate reconciliation.
The annual or platform fee was overlooked
Recalculate your effective annual cost, including Payoneer’s US$29.95 charge when the published receipt threshold is not met and any marketplace commission. For irregular work, a route with a different fee structure may be cheaper over the full year.
