Image stabilization reduces the visible effects of camera movement. Optical image stabilization (OIS) moves optical hardware to counter detected motion; electronic image stabilization (EIS) processes captured images and may crop and shift them to steady the final frame. A device can combine methods, but what works—and which recording modes support it—depends on its camera and settings.
How does optical image stabilization work?
OIS uses sensors and moving optical hardware to counter camera movement before it appears as motion in the captured image. Apple describes its iPhone implementation this way: “With OIS, a gyroscope senses that the camera moved. To reduce image motion, and the resulting blur, the lens moves according to the angle of the gyroscope.” Apple Support explains OIS and vibration exposure. STMicroelectronics likewise describes OIS as acting directly on lens position in its OIS white paper.
Because OIS adjusts optics rather than relying solely on changes to the recorded image, it can help reduce movement-related blur. It does not eliminate every kind of shake, and the result depends on the particular camera and conditions.
How does electronic image stabilization work?
EIS uses image data and processing to compensate for movement. One specific example is DJI’s RockSteady 3.0 in the Osmo Action 6. DJI says this implementation increases shutter speed, analyzes images captured by the CMOS sensor, cuts off image edges to compensate, and combines multiple frames into a single frame. Why EIS can narrow the view
Digital correction needs extra image area around the final frame so it can shift the image as the camera moves. Cutting off the edges provides that room, but the resulting view can be tighter. How much the field of view changes depends on the device and recording mode; there is no single crop percentage that applies to all cameras.
Can a camera combine OIS and EIS?
Yes. A system may use optical movement and digital processing together, but the balance and availability vary by device, camera module, and mode. A stabilization label alone does not tell you exactly how a particular camera produces its result.

Action cameras may also offer horizon correction alongside stabilization. DJI, for example, describes HorizonSteady on the Osmo Action 6 as correcting horizontal rotation to keep the horizon level, and lists supported resolutions and frame rates. Those mode limits illustrate why it is important to check the specific camera’s documentation rather than assume a feature works at every setting.
What are the limits and trade-offs?
Exposure and low-light conditions
OIS can be useful when longer exposures make movement blur more visible. An archived Apple Developer camera compatibility document says OIS is most effective for longer exposures and offers limited benefit for exposure times shorter than 1/30 second. This is historical guidance for the devices covered by that document, not a guarantee about every current phone or camera.

Strong, prolonged vibration
Apple warns that prolonged exposure to high-amplitude vibration in certain frequency ranges may degrade OIS and closed-loop autofocus systems in some iPhone models. Its support guidance on vibration exposure describes that risk. The warning is specific to affected iPhone models and exposure conditions; it does not mean ordinary handheld use will damage a camera.
Recording-mode restrictions
Stabilization may be unavailable, or work differently, at some resolutions, frame rates, fields of view, or capture modes. DJI’s listed HorizonSteady support for the Osmo Action 6 is one example of a feature with mode constraints. Check the current documentation for the exact camera and mode you plan to use.

How to compare stabilization on phones and action cameras
Compare the actual recording options you intend to use, not just labels such as “stabilized” or a stated number of axes. Check these details in the device’s current specifications and camera settings:
- Method: Does the camera use OIS, EIS, horizon correction, or a combination?
- Mode support: Which resolutions and frame rates remain available when stabilization is enabled?
- Framing: Does the selected mode crop the image or reduce the field of view?
- Lighting and exposure: Will the camera be used in bright conditions, low light, or with longer exposures?
- Camera selection: Is stabilization supported on the specific lens or camera module you will use?
The available documentation describes mechanisms and individual features, but it does not establish a controlled, cross-device performance ranking. There is no universal winner between OIS and EIS: the more useful system depends on the camera, mode, framing, lighting, and movement involved.

Do you need a gimbal?
No. Built-in OIS and EIS are camera stabilization methods; a smartphone gimbal is an optional physical accessory that can stabilize a phone. Whether an external stabilizer is useful depends on the kind of movement and framing you want, not on a requirement to use one with built-in stabilization.
