The pairing matters because the International Energy Agency (IEA) describes both as dispatchable renewables—resources that can be controlled to help match generation with demand. That makes Iceland a useful example of how local natural resources can support a very low-carbon electricity supply. It does not, on its own, prove that Iceland’s grid is more reliable than other grids: the available figures here do not compare outages, reserve margins, or unserved energy.
What powers Iceland’s electricity?
Hydropower and geothermal power dominate Iceland’s electricity generation. The IEA describes Iceland as combining the two dispatchable renewable resources to reach 100% renewable electricity; its broader comparison characterizes standout countries as having nearly 100% renewable electricity. The distinction between “100%” in the IEA’s statement and “nearly 100%” in its comparison is worth preserving rather than turning either phrase into a more exact, current-year figure. IEA, Renewables 2025.
The Environment Agency of Iceland’s 2024 National Inventory Report gives a generation split of 70% hydropower and 30% geothermal. Those are the report’s cited shares, not a verified breakdown for 2026. Environment Agency of Iceland, 2024 National Inventory Report.
Generation and capacity are different measures
The Government of Iceland reports 19.1 TWh of electricity generation in 2020 and 2.9 GW of total installed power capacity that year. It lists capacity shares of 73% hydropower and 26% geothermal. Capacity is the potential output of installed plants; generation is the electricity produced over time. The 2020 capacity shares therefore should not be substituted for the report’s generation split. Government of Iceland, 2024.

Why the hydro-geothermal combination is useful
Hydropower can draw on water resources
Hydropower generates electricity from flowing or stored water. Where water can be stored or managed, operators can schedule generation rather than relying only on whether wind is blowing or sunlight is available at a given moment.
Geothermal power draws on underground heat
Geothermal plants use heat from Iceland’s geothermal resources to generate electricity. The IEA’s central point is that Iceland has paired geothermal power with hydropower, and identifies both as dispatchable renewables. That controllability is relevant to supply planning: it offers a way to adjust renewable generation as demand changes, rather than depending entirely on variable wind and solar output.

Dispatchable capability is not the same as a measured reliability outcome. The figures cited here do not establish how often Iceland experiences interruptions, how long they last, or what reserve margins or unserved-energy levels the grid records.
Reliable energy is not the same claim as clean electricity
The title’s reliability claim needs qualification. A resource mix that includes dispatchable generation can help operators balance supply and demand, but a claim that Iceland’s electricity service is more reliable than another country’s requires comparable operating data. Useful measures would include interruption frequency and duration, reserve margins, and unserved energy. The sources cited here do not provide a comparable reliability series, so they support an explanation of the system’s resources—not a ranking of grid performance.

Nor do the sources establish that Iceland’s renewable system is free of ecological or community impacts. Hydropower and geothermal development have site-specific consequences; judging them requires project-level evidence that is not included in these national figures.
Electricity is not the whole energy picture
Nearly all-renewable electricity does not mean every form of energy used in Iceland is renewable. Electricity generation is one part of the energy balance; transport, heating, and other activities can use different fuels. Statistics Iceland’s energy-flow accounts cover energy consumption and electricity supply by economic activity for 2014–2024, making them useful for examining sector context without conflating total energy use with electricity generation. Geothermal energy also has a major direct-heating role, separate from its use in power stations. The Environment Agency’s 2024 National Inventory Report says geothermal energy heats over 90% of homes. That figure describes home heating, not the share of electricity generated.

Landsnet, Iceland’s transmission-system operator, issues Guarantees of Origin for electricity meeting renewable or combined-heat-and-power criteria set by the energy authority. The certificates indicate how much qualifying electricity was produced and sold in Iceland. Landsnet also says it does not monitor how certificates are traded or used. Landsnet: Guarantees of Origin.

A certificate is an accounting instrument; it does not trace the physical route of an electron from a particular plant to a specific customer. It can document qualifying production and sales under the scheme’s criteria, but it is not proof of direct physical delivery.
What other countries can learn from Iceland
Iceland is a case study in geography-specific energy planning, not a universal blueprint. Its local hydropower and geothermal resources are central to the electricity mix; another country cannot assume it has comparable resources at usable scale. The relevant lesson is to assess which controllable low-carbon resources are locally available and how they can fit with variable renewables, storage, networks, and demand.
- Compare like with like: Separate electricity generation from total final energy use, and distinguish installed capacity from actual generation.
- Assess the resource base: Iceland’s combination reflects local hydro and geothermal potential, not a mix that can simply be copied everywhere.
- Measure reliability directly: Dispatchable resources can support balancing, but outage and reserve data are needed to demonstrate service reliability.
- Account for impacts: National renewable shares alone do not show the ecological and community effects of individual projects.
Official data series also have different end dates: Orkustofnun’s power-station series surfaced through 2020, while Statistics Iceland’s energy-flow accounts run through 2024. The Environment and Energy Agency began operations on 1 January 2025, when the Icelandic Energy Authority closed; institutional names should therefore be read in the context of each publication’s date.
