Yes, a Raspberry Pi can run Home Assistant and a small collection of lightweight self-hosted services continuously. The practical limits are power delivery, storage reliability, network quality, and the CPU and memory demands of each service—not a fixed number of apps. A Raspberry Pi 5 is officially supported by Home Assistant, but the complete system must be powered and stored correctly for dependable 24/7 operation.
What a 24/7 Raspberry Pi setup can realistically do
Home Assistant’s installation documentation lists Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 4 as supported hardware. That makes either board a reasonable base for home automation and other modest services such as dashboards, lightweight databases, DNS filtering, or small internal web applications.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no authoritative universal limit for how many self-hosted tools a Pi 5 can run. Capacity depends on each service’s CPU, RAM, storage-I/O and network workload. A handful of idle or lightly used services is a different proposition from video transcoding, large databases, machine-learning workloads, or many busy containers.
Home Assistant reported in 2024 that “A third of all Home Assistant users currently use a Raspberry Pi board as their dedicated Home Assistant system.” That is Stefan Agner’s reported figure, not an independent market survey, but it indicates how common this deployment pattern is.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much electricity it uses
Raspberry Pi Ltd. says peak power consumption for Raspberry Pi 5 rises to around 12W, compared with 8W for Raspberry Pi 4. The 12W figure is a peak-workload reference, not a promise that every self-hosted workload draws 12W continuously.

For scale, 12W running continuously would use 105.12kWh per year. At an illustrative rate of $0.30 per kWh, that is about $31.54 per year, or $2.63 per month. Your measured average and local tariff may be materially different, so a universal “coffee subscription” comparison would be misleading.
Hardware required for reliable operation
| Component | Requirement or recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Board | Raspberry Pi 5, or Pi 4 for supported Home Assistant installations | Provides the supported platform; workload capacity varies by service. |
| Power supply | Appropriate USB-C supply; Raspberry Pi documentation identifies a 5V/5A supply for Pi 5 | Low voltage can trigger warnings, instability and storage corruption. |
| Boot storage | At least a 32GB A2-rated microSD card for a basic Home Assistant installation | A2-rated media is recommended for application performance and durability. |
| Network | Ethernet where practical | Home Assistant recommends it for a more reliable connection than Wi-Fi. |
| Expansion storage | Optional NVMe HAT and SSD | Useful for databases, frequent writes and larger local data sets. |
Build the system in the right order
- Choose the board and services. List every service, its expected users, storage growth and whether it requires x86-only software, substantial RAM or intensive media transcoding. Those requirements may rule out a Pi even when Home Assistant itself is suitable.
- Buy the correct power supply. Use a USB-C supply appropriate for Pi 5, rather than reusing an underpowered phone charger. Watch for low-voltage warnings after installation.
- Install dependable boot storage. Start with a minimum 32GB A2-rated microSD card for a basic Home Assistant installation. If the workload writes frequently or stores substantial data, use an NVMe HAT with an SSD as documented for Pi 5.
- Prefer wired networking. Connect Ethernet for automation reliability, especially when the Pi controls devices or hosts services other computers must reach continuously.
- Measure the complete setup. Put a wall power meter between the outlet and the finished system. Record average watts during normal operation and during your busiest workload, then apply the tariff formula.
- Plan backups and recovery. Keep current Home Assistant backups and copies of important service data off the Pi. Storage failure, power problems or a corrupted card should be a restore exercise rather than a rebuild from memory.
When an NVMe SSD is worth the extra hardware
MicroSD storage is adequate for a basic installation, but databases, logs, frequent sensor writes and larger local collections increase write activity. An NVMe HAT provides a documented Pi 5 path to faster persistent storage. It adds upfront cost and another powered component, so include the HAT, SSD and their measured consumption in the total-cost calculation.
Costs that matter beyond the electricity bill
Compare the complete upfront hardware cost—not just the board—with the measured monthly energy cost. Include the power supply, boot media, case or cooling, and any NVMe hardware. Also compare storage durability, CPU and RAM headroom, backup and recovery effort, and software compatibility.

Prices and stock vary by region and date. The electricity calculation is equally location-specific. A Pi may be inexpensive to operate while still being the wrong platform for software that is x86-only or for workloads dominated by intensive media transcoding.
Common failure modes and fixes
Low-voltage warnings or random instability
Replace an inadequate adapter or cable with the appropriate USB-C supply. Continued undervoltage can damage filesystem integrity and lead to storage corruption.
Unreliable automations or unreachable services
Use Ethernet, check the switch and cable, and reserve a stable address for the Pi in your network configuration.

Boot failures or a degraded microSD card
Restore from a recent backup to replacement media. Move write-heavy data to an SSD and keep backups on a separate device.
Slow response under load
Identify which service is consuming CPU, RAM or storage I/O. Reduce retention and logging, move databases to NVMe, or move the demanding service to hardware designed for it rather than assuming the Pi has a fixed service-count limit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The practical verdict
A correctly powered Raspberry Pi 5 can run Home Assistant and other lightweight self-hosted tools around the clock at modest measured energy use. Treat the board’s 12W specification as a peak reference, measure your finished setup, and choose storage and networking for the workload. The result can cost less to operate than many subscription services, but the honest comparison depends on your electricity tariff, hardware purchases and backup requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Raspberry Pi run Home Assistant 24/7?
Yes. Home Assistant officially supports Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 4. Use an appropriate USB-C supply, reliable storage and preferably Ethernet for continuous operation.
How many self-hosted services can a Raspberry Pi 5 run?
There is no universal published limit. The practical number depends on each service’s CPU, RAM, storage-I/O and network demands; intensive transcoding or x86-only software may require another platform.
Is a microSD card enough for Home Assistant?
Home Assistant recommends an A2-rated microSD card of at least 32GB for a basic installation. An NVMe HAT and SSD are better suited to frequent writes, databases or larger data sets.
