i-PRO’s strategy puts more video analytics on security cameras while connecting camera data to established video-management systems (VMS) and cloud services. That does not mean cloud video is going away: the company’s approach spans on-camera detection, on-premises search, and cloud-managed deployments. For enterprise teams, the practical change is more choice over where video is analyzed, stored, and managed—and more need to plan camera systems like other networked IT platforms.
What edge AI means for a security camera
Edge AI runs analytics on or near the camera rather than requiring every task to be performed by a remote cloud service. An AI camera can identify objects or events and generate metadata—descriptive information about what it detects. Depending on the system, video, event clips, or metadata can then be handled by a VMS, an on-premises server, or a cloud service.
i-PRO’s January 2025 outlook presented edge computing, AI, cloud computing, and data integration as connected parts of security-system design. The company argued that local processing can reduce reliance on cloud compute, improve response time, and avoid compression loss, while cloud deployments offer flexibility and scale. These are i-PRO’s stated benefits, not independently measured results. The company also emphasized compatibility with VMS platforms and the continuing role of human operators in decisions informed by AI.
Where i-PRO’s AI runs—and what each layer does
“Generative AI” does not describe one processing location across i-PRO’s portfolio. Its newer camera-based features and its recorded-video search system use different architectures.

Real-time detection on the X-series camera
In a March 2026 announcement, i-PRO said its X-series fisheye cameras would perform natural-language, free-text detection and feature extraction on the camera itself. Example prompts included “person lying down” and “delivery truck.” The camera also generates metadata. i-PRO said global availability would begin in June 2026.
This on-camera detection is distinct from searching recorded footage. i-PRO describes using Active Guard to search video through camera-generated metadata. In other words, detection can happen at the edge while the investigation workflow still depends on additional software and system components.
Recorded-video search with Active Guard
Active Guard 3.0, announced in 2025, used a different arrangement: its generative-AI search engine ran on an on-premises Active Guard server and searched best-shot images and metadata generated by i-PRO AI cameras. i-PRO said the feature could work without an external internet connection. It also described extending the capability to some non-AI cameras through X-series AI Processing Relay. This is not the same as running every generative-AI function on the camera.

The Active Guard 3.0 announcement named Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, Luxriot, and i-PRO VideoInsight among the VMS platforms in its ecosystem. i-PRO also said existing i-PRO AI cameras did not need to be replaced to use that update. Compatibility still depends on the specific products and configuration.
Cloud-managed video with Arcules
In March 2026, i-PRO and Milestone announced direct connectivity from selected i-PRO cameras to Arcules, Milestone’s video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) platform, without an on-site server, recorder, or gateway in the announced configuration. The release said camera-based people and vehicle analytics run at the edge, with relevant metadata and event video sent to the cloud. It also described local SD-card recording for resilience and compatibility alongside existing XProtect installations.
The Arcules announcement covers selected camera models, not every i-PRO camera, and said support would expand through 2026. Its claims about analytics, cloud connectivity, and resilience are vendor-described capabilities; the available sources do not provide independent bandwidth or network-loss testing.

How the deployment options compare
Edge, on-premises, and cloud are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The right design depends on which task is being performed and what an organization needs from its network, storage, and existing VMS.
| Approach | Where processing happens | Data handling described by i-PRO | Useful fit and considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-camera X-series detection | Camera | Real-time free-text detection, feature extraction, and metadata generation happen at the edge; Active Guard is used for forensic search across recorded video. | Useful when live detection should happen locally. Confirm how metadata and video are passed into the VMS and search workflow. |
| Active Guard 3.0 search | On-premises Active Guard server, using camera-generated best-shot images and metadata | i-PRO said the search feature could run without an external internet connection; some non-AI cameras could be included via X-series AI Processing Relay. | Can add natural-language search to an on-premises setup. Requires the relevant server and compatible camera/VMS configuration. |
| Arcules direct-to-cloud configuration | People and vehicle analytics at selected cameras; cloud service for video management | The announcement described sending relevant metadata and event video to Arcules, with local SD-card recording. | Can avoid an on-site server, recorder, or gateway in the announced configuration. Verify model eligibility, network requirements, and how local recording behaves during an outage. |
The table reflects architectures described in i-PRO and Milestone announcements, not an independent performance comparison. The available sources do not establish comparative latency, total cost, bandwidth savings, or recovery behavior under specific failure conditions.

What enterprise IT teams should evaluate
Moving analytics closer to the camera can change how much video needs to move across a network, but it does not remove the need to design the system as an integrated service. Before choosing an architecture, map the specific analytics task to the camera, server, VMS, and cloud components that perform it.
- Processing location: Establish whether live detection runs on the camera, recorded-video search on an on-premises server, or management and storage in a cloud service.
- Data movement and privacy: Identify whether raw streams, event clips, or metadata leave the site, where recordings are stored, and who administers access. Local analysis or metadata-first transfer may reduce unnecessary video movement, but does not by itself determine privacy or compliance.
- Network and resilience: Set latency and availability requirements, then verify local recording, outage behavior, and recovery procedures with the specific configuration. The vendor announcements do not independently validate these outcomes.
- Interoperability and migration: Check the exact camera, firmware, VMS, and cloud-service combination. Active Guard’s named VMS integrations and its stated support for existing i-PRO AI cameras can matter where replacement is undesirable; Arcules direct connectivity applies only to selected models.
- Operating costs and skills: Compare servers and gateways, bandwidth, cloud and VMS licensing, storage, maintenance, and the staff expertise required to administer each design. The announcements do not provide figures for a like-for-like cost comparison.
- Human review: Decide which events should trigger an alert or investigation and where an operator must validate an AI-generated result. Automation can prioritize attention without replacing organizational decision-making.
What “closer to enterprise IT” means
i-PRO’s announcements point toward more software integration and deployment choice: camera-generated metadata can feed VMS search, selected cameras can connect to a cloud-managed service, and partner applications can run at the edge. That makes interoperability, network planning, access control, and lifecycle management central considerations alongside camera placement and image coverage.
It is more accurate to describe this as a direction in i-PRO’s product strategy than as a completed industry-wide shift. The announcements show multiple architectures coexisting—camera, on-premises server, and cloud—rather than one replacing the others.
