A CR2032 can stop powering a device long before its full rated capacity has been used if short, high-current pulses pull its voltage below the device’s functional endpoint. In measurements reported by Nordic Semiconductor and Energizer, a cell reached a 2.0 V endpoint after about 125 mAh with 30 mA pulses every 10 ms, and after about 70 mAh under an 80 mA pulsed drain. Those are specific test results, not universal capacity ratings for every CR2032 or device.

Why pulse current can reduce usable capacity

A CR2032’s advertised capacity is measured under a particular discharge condition. A device with a pulsed load does not necessarily get that capacity: as current flows, the cell’s internal resistance causes an immediate voltage drop, followed by a slower polarization-related drop. If the voltage at the device falls below its functional endpoint (FEP)—the minimum voltage at which the system still works—the device may reset or shut down even though chemical energy remains in the cell.

That distinction explains why a battery can measure close to 3 V with little or no load yet fail during a radio transmission or another power burst. The unloaded reading does not show the voltage sag during the burst. A device’s FEP is also a system property: the component with the highest minimum supply requirement during the pulse can determine when the whole device stops working.

Shorter pulses generally leave less time for polarization to build, but they do not make peak current irrelevant. Peak level, pulse width, repetition rate, background load, temperature, cell condition and cutoff voltage all affect how much capacity is usable. Nordic Semiconductor and Energizer’s technical paper states: “Coin cells can deliver very high peak currents, but not without a drop in supply voltage and consequently a lower margin to the FEP and resulting degradation of available battery capacity.”

What the measured capacity figures show

The figures below come from controlled examples in a 2012 Nordic Semiconductor and Energizer technical paper. They illustrate how strongly capacity can depend on the load profile and endpoint; they are not a derating chart that applies to every cell, temperature or product.

Test condition reported Capacity accessed before endpoint How to interpret it
Drain near 500 µA; 2.0 V FEP About 230–240 mAh The tested cell accessed roughly its full capacity under this low-drain condition.
Continuous 2.5 mA drain; 2.0 V FEP About 175 mAh The endpoint was reached after less capacity than under the low-drain test.
30 mA pulse every 10 ms; 2.0 V FEP About 125 mAh The reported endpoint came after roughly half the nominal capacity. The pulse width is not specified in the summary of this result.
80 mA pulsed drain; 2.0 V FEP About 70 mAh The paper reports this capacity for its pulsed test; the pulse schedule is not specified here.
Peak currents below 30 mA; 2.0 V FEP Roughly 175–185 mAh The paper characterizes capacity loss as manageable in this range.
Approximately 10 mA peak; 2.4 V FEP About 175 mAh The paper reports this approximate capacity at the higher endpoint.
Approximately 30 mA peak; 2.4 V FEP About 100 mAh At the same stated endpoint, the reported capacity is lower at this higher peak-current level.

The 2.0 V and 2.4 V endpoints matter: a device that resets at 2.4 V cannot use capacity that remains available in a test allowed to discharge to 2.0 V. Likewise, an 80 mA pulse result cannot be translated directly into a runtime estimate for a device whose pulse width, interval or background current differs.

How to interpret Energizer’s pulse examples

Energizer’s CR2032 datasheet gives typical, condition-specific discharge examples at 21°C. It lists 0.19 mA as a continuous reference, approximately 6.8 mA for 2-second pulses 12 times per day, and approximately 23 mA for pulses that are 1 ms on and 14 ms off. These examples describe different load profiles; they do not establish that every CR2032 will support those currents in every device or provide a guaranteed runtime.

Energizer notes that its datasheet “contains typical information specific to products manufactured at the time of its publication.” Use the relevant manufacturer’s current cell data and your product’s actual load profile when making a design decision. Typical curves can vary with temperature, cell construction, age, storage, internal resistance, pulse timing and cutoff voltage.

Estimate runtime from the device’s real load profile

Start with the corrected capacity for the pulse conditions and FEP closest to the product, not simply the capacity printed on the cell. The Nordic Semiconductor and Energizer paper gives this relationship:

Battery life (hours) = corrected battery capacity (mAh) ÷ maximum average current (mA)

To estimate maximum average current, include both the periods of high activity and the device’s baseline draw. For repeated operating cycles, calculate charge used during a representative cycle from each load and its duration, then divide by the cycle duration. The shortest pulse interval and highest-current mode that can occur in the product should govern the lifetime estimate. As the paper puts it: “The shortest pulse period encountered by the application is the one that must be used for battery lifetime estimates.”

The estimate is only as useful as its inputs. The corrected capacity must reflect the load, endpoint and conditions; the average current must represent the worst credible operating pattern. For a final product estimate, account for variation between cells and validate the loaded voltage and runtime on the actual hardware.

Design changes that can prevent resets

  • Set the system endpoint first. Identify the minimum supply voltage of every component that must remain powered during a burst. The highest of those minimum requirements controls the system’s margin.
  • Reduce overlapping loads. Avoid switching on the radio, LEDs, display, sensors, motor or buzzer at the same time where the design can sequence or otherwise limit them. Reducing peak current can preserve voltage margin.
  • Check the worst pulse schedule. Include the shortest possible interval between high-current events, not just a typical or average interval. Repeated bursts can reduce usable capacity even when each pulse is brief.
  • Use local decoupling and suitable power management. A capacitor near the load can help with transients, but its value and implementation must be validated. Startup behavior, leakage and regulator operation can introduce other problems; the paper favors removing the cause of poor supply behavior through sound design where possible.
  • Compare cells under matching conditions. Consider peak current, pulse width, interval and duty cycle, FEP, temperature, baseline current, internal resistance, accessible capacity and cell-to-cell variation. A higher nominal mAh figure alone does not guarantee longer runtime with pulsed loads.

When a different CR2032 may be appropriate

Cell construction and internal resistance affect pulse performance, so a manufacturer-specified high-rate CR2032 may be worth evaluating when the load cannot be reduced. Panasonic Energy describes its product range as including products for high-rate pulse discharge and low-temperature performance, and lists transmission-tag and remote-control applications. That product-level statement is not a universal performance guarantee: check the specification for the exact cell and validate it under the device’s pulse schedule, temperature and FEP.
