Submarines launch heavyweight torpedoes through torpedo tubes; after launch, the weapon may receive remote guidance through an attached wire, search autonomously using sonar, or combine the two. The U.S. Navy’s MK 48 illustrates why launch method, wire guidance and acoustic homing are separate parts of the process.

What happens when a submarine launches a heavyweight torpedo?

A heavyweight torpedo is prepared and launched from a submarine’s torpedo tube. The MK 48 Mod 6AT technical sheet lists two launch capabilities: impulse and swimout. These describe ways the torpedo exits the submarine; neither tells you how it locates or follows a target.

Public Navy material describes pre-launch procedures, arming, launch and tube-control actions in a team-training context. It does not establish one universal firing sequence for every submarine class or torpedo variant. The Naval Air Warfare Center’s 688i Weapons Launch Console description provides training-system context, while the MK 48 Mod 6AT technical sheet identifies the launch types.

How is a torpedo guided after launch?

Guidance describes how the weapon is directed or how it searches after entering the water. For the MK 48, the Navy describes an acoustic-homing weapon with digital guidance-and-control systems. Two functions can be involved: remote operation from the submarine and the torpedo’s own acoustic search. They are not mutually exclusive.

Wire guidance: a communications link

An attached guidance wire can provide a communications path between the submarine and a heavyweight torpedo after launch, allowing remote operation. The wire does not detect the target; it is the link used to communicate with the weapon. The U.S. Navy’s September 2024 draft Supplemental EIS/OEIS, Appendix A, explains that heavyweight torpedoes can be operated remotely through an attached guidance wire.

Acoustic homing: listening or transmitting

Autonomous acoustic guidance uses sound to search for a target. In passive mode, the torpedo listens for sounds generated by the target. In active mode, it transmits sonar pings and uses returning sound to search. The Navy’s 2024 appendix describes both approaches; the Navy’s MK 48 fact file identifies the weapon as acoustic-homing.

How to interpret descriptions of torpedo guidance

When comparing a guidance description, separate the questions below. A phrase such as “wire-guided” identifies a remote communications capability, not necessarily the weapon’s only means of finding a target.

  • Launch method: How does the weapon leave the tube? The cited MK 48 Mod 6AT sheet lists impulse and swimout.
  • Remote link: Does an attached wire provide post-launch communication with the submarine?
  • Autonomous search: Does the weapon listen passively, transmit active sonar pings, or use both modes?
  • Variant and upgrade state: Which torpedo version is being described, and is a capability fielded or planned?
  • Source and scope: Is the claim about a specific variant, a general Navy fact-file description, or a program plan?

What the public record says about the MK 48

The MK 48 is a U.S. Navy heavyweight torpedo used by submarines for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. The Navy fact file, updated 15 November 2023, lists general characteristics of a 21-inch diameter, 3,744-pound weight and a 650-pound high-explosive warhead. Those are the fact file’s general figures, not a guarantee that every MK 48 variant has identical characteristics.

The Department of the Navy’s FY2026 Weapons Procurement Justification Book discusses planned communications-system and other MOD 8 upgrades. A program description or funding plan should not be read as proof that every operational MK 48 already has those upgrades. Public sources cited here describe the broad functions, but do not support precise performance or tactical-range comparisons across torpedoes.
