Guitar Hero-style games turn a song into a timed set of controller instructions: colored notes tell you which fret buttons to hold, and the strike line tells you when to play them. Those notes are an authored, playable chart—not conventional guitar tablature or a literal display of every pitch in the recording.
How does a song become playable notes?
The audio provides what you hear; a separate chart tells the game when to show events and what input they require. In the documented Clone Hero chart format, a song folder can contain audio, metadata and a multi-track MIDI file named notes.mid. The MIDI data can include a tempo map and instrument tracks, with note events placed in time. MIDI Note On and Note Off events describe starts and releases, but the game-specific chart format gives those events their gameplay meaning. A colored gem is therefore not simply a standard guitar pitch.
Chart authors align events with the music, then the game schedules those events to travel toward the strike line at a visible speed. The chart may simplify or reshape what is heard to make a part playable at a particular difficulty. Music scholar Kiri Miller describes transcribers working by ear with audio stems, waveform views and MIDI score tools, with playability as a central concern. As she put it, “the transcription is telling you how to play it on the guitar controller, and not how to play it on the electric guitar.” That distinction is why the chart should be understood as a controller-facing musical abstraction, not an objective transcription of every recorded part. Miller’s discussion appeared in a 2014 Cambridge University Press scholarly forum.
What do the colored notes mean in five-fret play?
In the familiar five-fret layout, the lanes are green, red, yellow, blue and orange, corresponding to the controller’s five fret buttons. When a note reaches the strike line, hold the matching fret button or combination and strum in the game’s timing window. The highway perspective helps you judge when the event will arrive; the strike line marks the moment the input should register. Strumming when no note is due can break a combo. Clone Hero’s controller documentation and Miller’s discussion of Guitar Hero and Rock Band notation describe this controller-oriented mapping.

- Single notes: Press the fret button represented by the lane and strum as the note reaches the strike line.
- Chords: Press the indicated fret buttons together and strum at the event time.
- Sustains: A note head with a tail signals that the input continues for the tail’s duration.
- HOPO notes: Smaller note heads can indicate hammer-on/pull-off events that do not require a strum while the combo is active.

Visual conventions and exact rules vary among games and chart formats, so a symbol’s behavior should be checked against the particular game rather than assumed universal. Clone Hero’s documentation and the scholarly discussion of Guitar Hero/Rock Band charts describe the broad note-action distinctions.
Do all Guitar Hero-style games use the same controller layout?
No. The common five-fret format uses five colored fret buttons, while Guitar Hero: Live introduced a six-fret layout arranged as three lanes with two button positions per lane. These are physically different mappings. Identify both the game/chart layout and the controller before troubleshooting button assignments or shopping for an instrument. The cited format documentation describes a Harmonix/Rock Band MIDI lineage and community extensions, not one universal format for every Guitar Hero release. Can you play without a guitar controller?
Yes. In Clone Hero, a guitar-shaped controller is optional: the manual lists keyboard, traditional gamepad, compatible guitar and drums as possible inputs. A guitar controller provides fret buttons and a strum bar that correspond directly to conventional five-fret play, but support depends on the exact device, connection and platform. Clone Hero’s controller documentation lists the supported input categories and compatibility guidance.
