Why GTA 6 has two protagonists
Rockstar North head of development and co-studio head Rob Nelson said the team considered other configurations, including four protagonists, but worried that adding more leads would leave less time to develop each one and make it harder for players to invest emotionally. He described GTA 6 as a story about Jason and Lucia and the relationship between them. In the Famitsu interview’s English translation, Nelson put it this way: “This game is the story of Jason and Lucia, but at the same time, it is also the story of the relationship between two human beings.” GTAVice.net’s English translation of the Famitsu interview identifies the original interview and was published September 9, 2026.
Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page frames the pair as relying on each other after an easy score goes wrong, with events unfolding across Leonida. That premise helps explain why the other protagonist may matter as more than an alternate character to select: their relationship is part of the story’s structure.
How switching between Jason and Lucia is expected to work
Nelson described three switching patterns, rather than a single rule that applies throughout the game. The interview does not establish every condition for switching during free roam, so it is safest to treat these as reported mission and story behaviors—not a complete account of the final controls.

These descriptions indicate that player choice and authored pacing can coexist. A mission may let players decide whose perspective to use, while another keeps them with a specific character to preserve a story beat or make use of that character’s role.
What the reported mission examples reveal
A high-rise mission locked to Jason
Nelson described a high-rise mission that keeps the player as Jason because of his former special-forces background. The example suggests that character-specific experience can explain why a mission centers on one protagonist. It does not establish that Jason will always be the only playable character in missions involving those skills.

A police escape with an automatic handoff
In a police escape example, control begins with Jason firing from a car, then switches to Lucia driving. This illustrates an automatic transition in which each character takes a distinct role during the same sequence. The reported example supports the existence of mission handoffs, but it does not establish how often they occur.
A robbery with a choice to bring Lucia
Nelson also said a convenience-store robbery can be attempted alone or with Lucia invited along. That points to at least one shared activity where players can choose whether the other protagonist joins. It suggests partnership can affect how an activity is approached, although the interview does not detail the consequences or options available in either version.

GTA 6 and GTA 5: a design comparison
GTA 5 is a useful reference because it is the predecessor named in the comparison and has three protagonists. But the reported GTA 6 design should not be reduced to “GTA 5, with one fewer character”: Nelson explicitly connected the two-lead setup to investment in Jason, Lucia, and their relationship, and described story-dependent limits as well as switching options.

What remains uncertain
The interview describes mission and story patterns, but does not settle every free-roam switching rule or show how often each pattern will appear. Nor does it verify the final implementation in a playable or retail build. It is reasonable to infer that the system may make players feel more like they are directing a criminal partnership than choosing among parallel leads, but that is an interpretation of the reported design, not a confirmed description of every activity.
For now, the clearest answer to “Can you switch between Jason and Lucia?” is: the developer has described both switchable missions and sections where switching is restricted or happens automatically. Exactly how freely players can change characters outside those situations is not established by the cited interview.
