Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M (Mature 17+) by the US Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Its listed content includes intense violence, blood and gore, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language, drug and alcohol use, mature humor, and in-game purchases. That rating is a serious caution for parents, but it is a guide—not an individual judgment about every child. Consider the specific content alongside your child’s maturity and your family’s boundaries before buying.
What is GTA 6 rated in the US?
The ESRB’s game-specific US listing rates Grand Theft Auto VI M (Mature 17+). The rating means the game is intended for adults and may be unsuitable for people under 17. The ESRB lists these content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. It also separately lists In-Game Purchases.
These descriptors tell you more than the letter rating alone. They indicate themes and material that may conflict with a child’s age, sensitivities, or household rules. They do not predict how any particular child will respond.
How should the rating affect your decision?
Use the M 17+ rating as a strong reason to pause rather than as a substitute for your judgment. Read the descriptors, consider your child’s maturity and sensitivity to violence or sexual material, and decide whether the listed content fits your family’s rules. If you are unsure, waiting is a reasonable option; there is no need to treat a purchase as a milestone or a decision every child should make at the same age.

The ESRB listing is evidence about the game’s rated content, not a personalized recommendation that a particular child should or should not play it. The official sources cited here do not provide a named expert’s child-specific advice or a statistic that determines suitability.
Which rating should parents check outside the US?
Age classifications vary by country. The US ESRB M 17+ rating should not be treated as a universal label: check the classification issued for the country where the game will be purchased and played.

There is a discrepancy on the US PlayStation page: its FAQ still says GTA VI’s ratings are unconfirmed, while the same page displays content descriptors and the dedicated ESRB entry gives the current US M 17+ rating. For the current US classification, use the ESRB’s dedicated GTA VI listing; do not mistake the stale FAQ answer for the current rating. PlayStation’s reminder that ratings differ by country remains relevant.

Know what a boxed physical version contains
Rockstar customer support says the physical version is a code in a box, not a disc. Redemption depends on platform and country. Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in the same country as the platform account to avoid activation problems. If you are giving the game as a gift, check that the code’s region matches the recipient’s account.
Check the release date close to purchase
Rockstar’s official game page currently lists November 19, 2026 as the release date. Release information can change, so confirm it on the official page near the time you plan to buy.

Can platform controls help?
PlayStation says accounts can be age-restricted using the PlayStation Family App. That may help parents manage access on PlayStation, but it does not change the game’s rating or determine whether its content fits a child. Check the relevant platform’s family and account settings for the console being used; PlayStation’s guidance should not be assumed to describe Xbox controls.
PlayStation’s product FAQ describes GTA VI as single-player. The ESRB separately lists in-game purchases. Those facts do not establish the details of every purchase feature or every platform setting, so review the applicable platform controls and purchase settings rather than assuming what they include.
