Google SynthID looks for an imperceptible watermark embedded in some AI-generated content. A positive result is evidence that the examined material contains a signal associated with a covered system—not proof that the entire file was AI-made, who made it, or whether its claims are true. A negative result means no covered watermark was detected; it does not establish that a person made the content.
How does Google SynthID detection work?
SynthID is a watermarking system, not a universal AI-content classifier. A participating generation system embeds a signal as it creates content; a detector then looks for patterns associated with that watermark. The implementation differs by media type, so there is no single detection technique that applies identically to every image, video, audio clip, and text.
Google’s current overview, accessed October 7, 2026, says supported image, video, and audio can be checked through Gemini, Search, and Chrome, and describes a SynthID Detector portal whose access is expanding beyond its initial testing with journalists and media professionals. The overview names Google and partner systems including OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao, and describes Apple as coming soon. These are Google’s current product and partner statements, not a guarantee that every service, region, file type, or product version supports every check. Availability and scope can change.
The portal’s described media checks should not be confused with text detection: Google describes watermarking for Gemini text separately. Check the service’s current interface and supported formats before relying on it for a particular file.

What can SynthID prove?
What a positive result supports
A positive result supports the narrower statement that a detector found a watermark signal it associates with a covered generation system in the submitted material. In its original Imagen image explanation, Google describes outcomes in likelihood terms such as “likely,” “unlikely,” or “possibly” generated, and notes that only part of an image may be generated. The careful way to report a finding is therefore: “SynthID detected a watermark associated with a covered system in the examined content.”
What it does not establish
A watermark result alone does not identify the person who created or uploaded a file, establish when it was created, show whether it has been edited, or prove that every part is synthetic. Nor does it determine whether a caption, scene, voice, or claim is true, false, misleading, or made with harmful intent. Provenance and truth are separate questions.
Google has not published a detector-wide accuracy statistic in the cited explanations. A confidence label or an illustrative percentage should not be treated as a universal probability that the whole item is AI-generated.

How do results differ by media type?
| Media | How Google describes the watermark | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Text | During generation, token probabilities are adjusted to create a pattern that can be compared with expected watermarked and unwatermarked patterns. Longer, more varied text gives the method more opportunity to encode a signal. | Confidence can fall substantially after thorough rewriting or translation. Short factual answers and predictable or fixed text provide fewer opportunities for watermarking. |
| Images | The signal is embedded in image pixels. Google describes deep-learning models trained together for watermarking and identification. | Google says the watermark can remain detectable after common filters, color or brightness edits, and lossy compression, but extreme manipulation can defeat the technique. A detected portion need not mean the whole image was generated. |
| Video | Google’s 2024 explanation describes placing the watermark in pixels across frames of Veo-generated video; its current overview describes checking supported video or video segments. | This does not imply that every AI video, including video from systems outside coverage, will be detected. |
| Audio | Google describes converting audio into a two-dimensional spectrogram representation to add a watermark. The signal is designed to be inaudible. | Google says its audio watermarking is designed to withstand common noise, MP3 compression, and speed changes. Coverage applies to products that add SynthID, not all synthetic audio. |
These resilience descriptions come from Google’s technical explanations; they are design claims, not an independent guarantee that every file will remain detectable after every edit or transformation.

What does it mean if SynthID finds no watermark?
It means the detector did not identify a covered signal in the material it examined. It does not rule out AI generation. The content might come from a system outside current coverage, use a format or service the detector does not support, or have a watermark that was removed or degraded. A signal may also be difficult to identify after transformations that lower confidence.
For text, Google specifically says that extensive rewriting and translation can greatly reduce confidence. For images, it warns that extreme manipulation can defeat the method. In any modality, a negative result is not a certificate of human authorship.

Can edited or translated text still be detected?
Sometimes, but detection is less dependable as the text changes. Google says mild paraphrasing and small edits may preserve a detectable pattern, while thorough rewriting or translation can greatly reduce confidence. Short factual responses and highly predictable wording are also weaker cases because they offer fewer opportunities for the watermarking method to encode a signal.
That makes a text result unsuitable as a stand-alone basis for accusing someone of academic misconduct or making another high-impact judgment. Consider the text’s context and other evidence, and do not turn an uncertain or negative result into a claim about authorship.

Can SynthID tell if a video is fake?
No. A detected watermark is a provenance clue, not a truth test. It may indicate that a covered system generated some of the examined video, but it does not establish that the depicted event did or did not happen, that the video has not been edited, or that its accompanying account is accurate. Conversely, no detected watermark does not show that a video is authentic or human-made.
How should you check a suspicious file?
- Use a currently supported checker. Google’s overview says supported image, video, and audio checks are available through Gemini, Search, and Chrome, and describes the expanding SynthID Detector portal. Follow the live product’s instructions and confirm that the file type and submitted content are supported.
- Read the result narrowly. Record what material was checked and what signal or confidence wording the service reported. Do not recast a finding about a portion or signal as proof about the whole file.
- Look for independent context. Check the original source, publication history, surrounding reporting, and other available evidence. A detector result cannot identify an uploader or establish when a file was made.
- Compare metadata and watermark evidence carefully. Metadata may record a creator or time, but can be removed or lost during editing. An embedded watermark may remain when metadata is gone. Either clue on its own is incomplete; neither necessarily supplies a trustworthy chain of custody.
Why SynthID is only one part of provenance checking
Watermarks and metadata answer different questions. Metadata is information stored with a file; an embedded watermark is a signal within the content itself. Google says a SynthID watermark can remain detectable when metadata has been lost, while also noting that metadata can be manually removed or lost during edits. Neither signal alone documents every step from creation through editing and publication. For consequential decisions, treat SynthID as one piece of provenance evidence and corroborate it with context and other records.
