Google Maps can use your device’s location to provide map and navigation features, but that is separate from whether Google saves your visits, routes, searches, or other activity to your account. The key controls are device location permissions, Maps Timeline, and Google Account activity settings. Each covers different data, so switching off or deleting one does not necessarily affect the others.
What Google Maps can collect and save
There is no single “location history” switch that governs every way Maps and other Google services may handle location-related information. It helps to separate four layers:
| Layer | What it covers | Where it may be saved |
|---|---|---|
| Device location access | Whether Maps can obtain your device’s location, depending on device location settings and app permissions. | Access to location on the device; this is not itself the same as saving Timeline history. |
| Maps Timeline | Visits and routes associated with your movements. | On eligible devices; an encrypted server backup is optional under Google’s current guidance. |
| Maps and Search activity | Examples include searches, directions, viewed places, shared place links, and calls when the applicable history setting is enabled. | Google Account activity, according to the relevant settings. |
| Other Google activity and processing | Other Google services and Maps functions may process or save information under their own settings and purposes. | Varies by service and setting; not all Maps processing is account history. |
Google says Maps may collect some navigation data to provide and improve the service, process it, and then delete it without associating it with your Google Account or device. Some activity, such as direction searches and ads shown while navigating, may be associated with your account. These are distinct forms of handling, not evidence that every location signal is saved as history. Google’s navigation-data explanation describes this distinction.
Does Google Maps track you when you are not using it?
Timeline is off by default and must be enabled. If you opt in, Google says precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline on eligible signed-in devices, even when Google apps are not being used. This is different from simply allowing the Maps app to access location while you use it. The exact behavior depends on your device, account, and settings. Google Maps Timeline Help explains its current storage and backup approach.

Google Account activity is another separate question: searches or other Maps interactions may be saved if the relevant history setting is on. Device location access, Timeline, and account activity should therefore be checked independently.
How Google says it uses location and activity
Google describes several purposes for location and activity data, including providing requested Maps functions, tailoring experiences, developing and improving services, and preventing fraud and abuse. Saved Search Services History can help people revisit activity and may be used for personalized recommendations or ads depending on their personalization and ad settings. These are Google’s stated potential uses; they do not mean every data point is used for every purpose or that every user sees personalized ads. Google’s Search Services History help and Privacy Policy describe these practices.

AI-powered Maps features
Google says some AI-powered Maps features may use or collect location. When Personalized Recommendations is enabled, responses may draw on Maps searches and directions, saved lists and labels, reviews, ratings and photos, Search activity, and connected Google content apps. Availability and settings can vary, and Google warns that AI answers may be wrong. See Google’s Maps AI features guidance for the current feature details.
Does turning off Timeline stop location tracking?
No. Turning off Timeline stops Timeline from saving new visits and routes under that feature, but it does not turn off device location access, other Google location services, or all account activity that may contain location-related information. Deleting Timeline data likewise does not necessarily delete Maps searches, viewed places, or activity saved under another setting. Google’s Maps activity controls and its location settings guidance distinguish these controls.

Maps Incognito is another option Google describes for avoiding the saving of Maps activity to your Google Account. It should not be treated as a way to block device location access or all Maps processing. Google Maps privacy settings explains the mode and its scope.
How to review, limit, or delete Maps data
Google is gradually updating Search services settings, so labels and paths can differ by account, app version, or rollout status. Use the current Google Account settings and current Maps app menus rather than relying on a fixed screenshot or menu path.

- Review device location permissions: In your device’s settings, check whether location is enabled and what permission Maps has. These settings govern device access and are separate from Timeline.
- Choose Incognito when appropriate: Turn on Maps Incognito if your aim is to avoid saving Maps activity to your Google Account for that session. It does not replace device permission controls.
Google says deletion begins by removing activity from view and from its systems, followed by a deletion process; limited business or legal retention may apply. Deleting Maps history does not necessarily delete Timeline visits, saved places, reviews, photos, or other history. Maps activity help covers the deletion scope.

Google says it removes visits to places it identifies as particularly personal from Timeline soon after identification. Examples include counselling centres, domestic violence shelters, abortion clinics, fertility centres, addiction treatment facilities, and addiction treatment, weight-loss, or cosmetic-surgery clinics. Google says places are usually designated automatically using information from businesses, websites, and users, with some manual designation; it also cautions that classifications may not always be current. Google’s particularly personal places guidance describes this protection.
