Google is linking product discovery, comparison, offers and selected checkout options across Search, Gemini and other services. The push includes two distinct pieces: Universal Cart, a shopper-facing cart, and Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a standard for connecting commerce systems. Neither means every product can be bought inside Google; checkout on Google is limited to eligible listings from participating merchants.
What Google’s shopping tools are designed to do
The goal, inferred from Google’s announced features, is to reduce the steps between researching a product and buying it while keeping Google surfaces involved throughout the journey. Google says it handles more than 1 billion AI-powered shopping interactions a day and its Shopping Graph contains more than 60 billion product listings; those are company-published figures, not independent measures of usage or catalog completeness. Google’s May 19, 2026 announcement describes how the new cart fits into that effort.
Universal Cart: a shared shopping workspace
Announced on May 19, 2026, Universal Cart is intended to work across Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail. Google says it can collect items across merchants and Google services, monitor price and stock changes, show price-history insights, surface offers and payment-card perks, and flag product incompatibilities, such as mismatched components in a custom PC. These are Google-described capabilities, not independently verified performance results.
When a shopper is ready, Google says checkout may happen using Google Pay or by transferring the items to a merchant’s site. The merchant remains the seller of record. Google’s May announcement said the initial U.S. rollout would cover Search and Gemini in summer 2026, with YouTube and Gmail to follow; that dated plan should not be treated as confirmation that every surface is now available to every shopper.

UCP: the connection standard behind commerce journeys
Universal Commerce Protocol is not the cart. It is an open standard intended to let agents, merchants and payment providers communicate across commerce tasks, from finding products through purchase and post-purchase support. Google announced it on January 11, 2026, naming Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart among its co-developers. Google said more than 20 other companies endorsed it, a company-reported count rather than an independently audited adoption figure. Google’s UCP announcement explains the standard and related retailer tools.
UCP-powered checkout: one possible way to pay
UCP-powered checkout lets shoppers complete eligible purchases on Google surfaces when the merchant participates and the listing qualifies. Google’s Merchant Center Help documentation says shoppers can use payment and shipping details saved in Google Wallet through Google Pay, while the merchant remains seller of record. The Help page states that “Only product listings using the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) product attribute will display the ‘Buy’ button for this checkout experience.” Google’s eligibility and checkout documentation describes the requirements.

Can you buy products directly in Gemini?
Sometimes, if the product and merchant are eligible for Google’s checkout experience. Google’s announcement of Universal Cart described checkout either with Google Pay or by sending shoppers to the merchant’s website; it did not promise in-Gemini purchase for every listing. Look for a Buy button on an eligible listing. Without one, the purchase flow may take you to the seller’s site instead.
Is Google checkout available to everyone?
No. As of the Google Merchant Center Help documentation accessed October 8, 2026, UCP-powered checkout is for select participating merchants and eligible products in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Google does not provide a complete public list of participating merchants, eligible products or country-by-country activation status in the reviewed documentation. A merchant’s appearance in an announcement about UCP does not establish that its products have live Google checkout.

Keep three types of information separate when checking availability:
- Announced rollout plans: Google’s May 2026 Universal Cart post described Search and Gemini in the U.S. first, followed by YouTube and Gmail. Plans are dated statements, not proof of current availability on every surface.
- Documented checkout markets: The Merchant Center Help page names the U.S., Canada and Australia, but limits the feature to select merchants and eligible listings.
- Actual listing eligibility: The product must meet Google’s requirements, including the
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility)attribute, to display the Buy button.
Google is adding tools for merchants and advertisers, too
The shopping push is not only about consumer-facing features. In a May 20, 2026 update, Google described Direct Offers in AI Mode, conversational product attributes, AI performance insights in Merchant Center and an Ask Advisor tool. It also described UCP-powered hotel booking and local food delivery as planned additions; those plans should not be read as confirmation of a completed rollout. Google’s May 20 update outlines these merchant and advertising tools.

Google had also announced Business Agent in January 2026: a branded chat experience on Search. That announcement described Direct Offers as a pilot and additional product attributes in Merchant Center. These features give merchants ways to present products and promotions in Google’s AI shopping experiences; they are separate from the consumer’s cart and from the protocol that enables commerce connections.

What to check before relying on Google checkout
- Open the product listing in Search or Gemini and check whether it shows a Buy button.
- If there is no Buy button, follow the listing’s merchant link and complete the purchase on the merchant’s site if offered.
- Before paying, confirm the seller and checkout details. Google says the merchant remains seller of record, even when checkout happens on a Google surface.
