Nicolas Cage says Spider-Noir nearly stalled because decision-makers were wary of making it in black and white. His proposed solution, inspired by Godzilla Minus One, was to offer the series in both monochrome and color. Cage says that pitch helped get the show made, though the studio’s internal decision-making has not been independently confirmed.

Why was Spider-Noir nearly not made?

At Dallas Fan Expo, Cage described concerns about the series’ black-and-white presentation. ComicBook.com reported him saying, “They weren’t going to make the show,” followed by, “They were terrified of the black and white. they were so nervous about it.” In Cage’s account, he contacted producer Jen Salke and looked for a way to address that concern. ComicBook.com’s report attributes the near-stall and the eventual solution to Cage; it does not establish that studio executives independently confirmed this sequence.

How did Godzilla Minus One enter the story?

Cage said he had watched Godzilla Minus One in color and then seen its black-and-white reissue. He connected the monochrome presentation with the look of an older Godzilla film, saying, “It looked like an old Godzilla movie.” From that example, he proposed that Spider-Noir could also be presented in two versions. ComicBook.com reports Cage said the idea helped save the series, while Esquire’s interview documents his support for the dual-format approach without independently confirming that it secured the greenlight.

The official Godzilla site lists a limited Godzilla Minus One SteelBook with 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs; it is physical media, not a Spider-Noir tie-in: Godzilla Minus One SteelBook.

Why will Spider-Noir have color and black-and-white versions?

Cage framed the choice as a way to serve viewers with different tastes and levels of familiarity with monochrome films. In Esquire’s February 2026 interview, he explained: “You don’t have to only do it in black and white. You could do it in color as well because this is for all ages.” He said he was personally drawn to the black-and-white version, but that both presentations worked for different reasons.

Presentation What it emphasizes
Black and white The film-noir style Cage said he preferred.
Color An alternative for viewers less accustomed to monochrome films.

What is Spider-Noir’s creative concept?

Cage described the series’ idea as combining 1930s film-noir style and speech with the Spider character. Esquire identifies his live-action character as Ben Reilly, a private investigator. Offering both visual treatments gives that noir concept a monochrome presentation while also providing a color option for viewers who would rather not watch in black and white.
