God of War (2018) keeps its camera moving through gameplay and story scenes to hold the player close to Kratos and Atreus. Making that continuity work took more than avoiding edits: the team had to plan performances, combat choreography, camera movement, and transitions so the shot could remain coherent while control shifted between player and game.
Why God of War uses an unbroken camera
Creative director Cory Barlog said he wanted the approach for the intimacy it could provide. The camera’s continuity helps keep the player with Kratos and Atreus rather than stepping outside the action to watch an edited sequence. In its 2019 session description, GDC characterized the cinematography challenge as finding ways to create deeper emotional tones with a limited no-cuts vocabulary.

That choice made the camera a constraint across both filmmaking and gameplay. In a conventional cinematic, an editor can cut to a new angle or reset the composition. Here, the camera had to travel between authored scenes and player-controlled moments without that reset. Santa Monica Studio’s technical overview also notes that the team planned for Atreus to move between narrative and gameplay states under the no-cut approach.
How the team staged scenes for continuity
Rehearse movement before capture
Director of Photography Dori Arazi describes a process that began with paper staging and then moved into rehearsal in real space. The team tested whether the planned action could work and gave participants a chance to internalize its pacing. Performers worked in scaled spaces and used props to represent other characters.

- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
An early attempt to film an Ogre scene by watching monitors on stage and using a stick to represent the camera exposed the limits of that approach. Arazi said the test led the team to develop a more sophisticated virtual-camera system. The final continuous image therefore should not be mistaken for an improvised, spontaneous take: it relied on deliberate blocking and tools that let the team plan and evaluate camera movement in real time.
Plan long performances precisely
Barlog told British GQ that positions and locations had to be planned exactly, especially when actors’ performances and camera movement needed to carry across gameplay and cinematics. GQ reported that some scenes discussed in the interview ran upwards of four-and-a-half minutes; that describes certain scenes, not a typical or average scene length.

How combat works without a cut
The Stranger fight shows how camera continuity can alter combat staging. Senior Staff Combat Designer Denny Yeh said the camera moved closer during the Baldur fight because tight framing helped punches feel forceful. The camera’s proximity also made it harder to reposition the fighters between phases without breaking the shot.
Yeh explained that getting both characters into place through gameplay without simply cutting to a new view took repeated iteration. The team used quick turns and heavy camera-shake impacts to help conceal some repositioning. Motion and impact could perform part of the work that an edit would normally do: preserving the shot while making a transition feel like part of the fight.

Changing the player’s point of view without cutting
Continuity does not mean the camera must stay at one distance or keep the same point of view. In the Helheim boat sequence, Arazi describes the camera moving between third-person and first-person perspectives to shift whose experience the player shares. The momentum of Kratos’s punches carries the camera into his remembered violence; it then swings toward Atreus and his reaction. The viewpoint changes, but the scene remains continuous.
This is one way the camera supports characterization as well as orientation. Instead of using a cut to announce a new perspective, the movement itself redirects attention and empathy between father and son.

What an unbroken shot changes in game production
A conventional edit can reset time, framing, or character positions. A camera that stays in motion and must remain compatible with gameplay has less freedom to do that. Scene blocking, actor performance, combat animation, camera movement, and player control have to meet at transitions that still read clearly.
| Design concern | Conventional edited cinematic | God of War’s no-cut approach |
|---|---|---|
| Continuity | An edit can reset the view, time, or composition. | Movement must carry the viewer between moments without an editorial reset. |
| Player agency | The viewpoint can be authored entirely through editing. | The camera must remain compatible with gameplay as control shifts between player and game. |
| Blocking and performance | A cut can hide repositioning or simplify a transition. | Movement and positions need deliberate staging, rehearsal, and coordination. |
| Point of view | A cut can instantly establish a new angle. | Camera movement can shift perspective and redirect empathy while preserving continuity. |
| Action transitions | An edit can conceal a change in position or phase. | Turns, impacts, and camera shake can help make repositioning feel part of the action. |
These are qualitative differences, not a measured comparison of immersion or production cost. The sources describing the game do not establish system-wide figures for cut counts, average scene length, staff-hours, or camera performance.
