A delayed game DLC release does not automatically entitle every buyer to a refund. Your options depend on the store and country on your receipt, what you bought, the revised release information, how long it has been, and whether included content has already started downloading or streaming. Store policies are not the same as your rights under local consumer law.

Start with the purchase details

Before requesting a refund, check the order receipt and the store account where you bought the content. Policies differ by storefront and region, and a publisher’s announcement does not itself determine what the store will refund.

  • Identify the purchase: Was it a standalone DLC preorder, a season pass, or a game preorder that included DLC or other bonus entitlements? The policies below do not treat these as interchangeable.
  • Record the dates: Note the original release window, any revised date, the purchase date, and whether the publisher has cancelled the content or says its release date is unknown.
  • Check downloads and streaming: This can affect cancellation eligibility, particularly for PlayStation season passes.
  • Keep records: Save the receipt and the publisher’s delay or cancellation notice before contacting the store.

Store rules below are examples for the named storefronts and regions, not universal refund rules. Check the current terms for the country shown on your purchase and any consumer-law rights that apply there.

What the platform policies say

Store and scope Situation covered What the policy says
Steam season passes Cancelled or delayed season-pass DLC Valve says customers will be offered a refund for the value of unreleased DLC if a season-pass DLC is cancelled. Valve may take action if DLC is delayed more than three months beyond its originally promised release window, or if season-pass content remains unreleased after one year. Possible actions include removing the pass from sale, refunding the unreleased DLC’s value, or allowing a refund of the whole pass; a whole-pass refund is not stated as automatic. [Steamworks season-pass documentation]
PlayStation Store, United States Season passes, games, and add-ons A season pass may generally be cancelled within 14 days of purchase if no included digital item has started downloading or streaming, except where the item is faulty. The policy gives similar conditions for games and add-ons. Applicable local law may grant additional rights. [PlayStation US cancellation policy]
Epic Games Store Game pre-purchases delayed If a game’s delay is indefinite and its release date is unknown, Epic says the pre-purchase is automatically fully refunded. If a planned release date is delayed by less than 30 days, Epic says it notifies the customer of the new date and offers an opportunity to cancel. The cited guidance does not establish what happens for other delay lengths. [Epic Games support]
Nintendo of America, United States Digital products, including pre-purchases Nintendo says payments are final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. Nintendo UK describes preorder and preload mechanics for selected games and DLC, but that FAQ is not a general refund policy. [Nintendo of America legal terms; Nintendo UK preorder FAQ]

Steam: season-pass delays and cancellations

Steam’s cited rules are specifically about season passes. Steamworks describes a season pass as a DLC pre-purchase and requires developers to provide clear descriptions and release windows. Valve says a developer may reschedule a season-pass DLC release date once, by up to three months.

If a season-pass DLC is cancelled, Steamworks says customers will be offered a refund for the value of the unreleased DLC. For a delay exceeding a quarter—three months—beyond the originally promised release window, Valve says it may take action even without a customer complaint. The possible actions include removing the pass from sale, refunding the value of unreleased DLC, or allowing a refund of the whole pass. Valve also says it may act if season-pass content is still unreleased after one year. These are Valve’s described actions and developer obligations; they do not promise that every buyer automatically receives a full-pass refund once three months have passed.

PlayStation: the US cancellation window depends on use

For a PlayStation Store purchase in the United States, the policy’s ordinary cancellation route is time-limited: a season pass may generally be cancelled within 14 days of purchase only if downloading or streaming any included digital item has not started. The policy makes an exception for faulty content. It also applies a comparable download-or-stream condition to games and add-ons.

The cited policy explains purchase-cancellation conditions; it does not say that a release delay alone guarantees a refund. It also says local law may provide additional rights.

Epic: distinguish an unknown date from a short delay

Epic’s guidance concerns game pre-purchases, not a general rule for every standalone DLC or season pass. It describes two cases: an indefinite delay with no known release date, for which Epic says the pre-purchase is automatically fully refunded; and a planned release date delayed by less than 30 days, for which Epic says the buyer is notified of the new date and given the opportunity to cancel. Do not assume either stated outcome applies to a delay outside those cases without checking Epic’s current terms or support.

Nintendo: US final-sale terms and UK preorder mechanics

Nintendo of America’s US digital-products policy says payments, including pre-purchases, are final and non-refundable except as authorized by Nintendo or required by applicable law. That is not a guarantee that Nintendo will refund a delayed preorder. The cited Nintendo UK FAQ explains that selected games and DLC can be preordered and preloaded, with an update unlocking content on release day; it does not set out a general refund entitlement. The US policy and UK FAQ address different matters and should not be combined into one regional rule.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

How to make a refund request

  1. Confirm the storefront and country: Use the store and region shown on the receipt, then open that region’s current refund terms or support page.
  2. Classify the purchase: State whether the order is a standalone DLC preorder, a season pass, or a game preorder with bonus content.
  3. Describe the release change precisely: Include the original window, revised date if one exists, and whether the publisher has cancelled the DLC or says the release date is unknown.
  4. Check the content’s status: Note whether any item included in the purchase has begun downloading or streaming.
  5. Contact the store: Submit the order details and saved notices through the relevant storefront’s support route. If the store policy does not resolve the issue, check whether local consumer law provides a separate right.
