Everyday durability also depends on the flexible display, how the phone is handled, and whether dust, pressure, drops, or other damage is involved.
How long do foldable phone hinges last?
There is no single lifespan that applies to every foldable phone. Samsung Gulf says the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are engineered for an average of 200,000 folding cycles. Samsung equates that figure with more than five years at about 100 folds a day, but it is engineering guidance, not a guaranteed service life or warranty. Samsung Gulf’s Fold6 and Flip6 guidance was updated July 1, 2026.
A newer figure needs careful interpretation: Samsung Display reported that a foldable OLED panel used in the Galaxy Z Fold7 remained fully functional after 500,000 folds. Samsung said Bureau Veritas conducted the test over 13 days at 25°C (77°F). This is a panel test, not a whole-phone comparison with the Fold6 or Flip6 cycle figure. Fold counts measure repeated motion under defined test conditions. They do not by themselves predict how a particular phone will fare through years of variable use, including drops, grit, impact, or pressure. Samsung’s earlier Fold3 and Flip3 guidance also notes that its 200,000-fold result was obtained under specified temperature conditions and is not guaranteed under other temperatures. Do foldable phone screens break easily?
The flexible inner display is not the same as a rigid glass screen: Samsung warns that hard pressure or sharp objects can damage the inner screen, particularly near the fold. Avoid poking, scraping, or pressing forcefully on it, and do not put keys, coins, or cards between the folded display surfaces.
Some models have a factory-applied inner-screen film. Samsung’s instructions for the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 warn that peeling this film off can damage the display; if it detaches, Samsung directs users to authorized service rather than DIY removal or replacement. These instructions are specific to those models, so follow the current guidance for your own phone. Samsung’s Fold3 and Flip3 guidance covers the film and screen-care warnings.

Is the crease on a foldable phone normal?
A visible fold line can be part of the flexible display’s construction and may show more clearly under direct lighting. Samsung says subtle curves visible in direct light on the Fold5 and Flip5 do not by themselves indicate a defect. A crease’s appearance alone cannot diagnose an individual phone. Samsung Pakistan’s Fold5 and Flip5 hinge FAQ was updated September 5, 2023.
Samsung also says that some clicking or snagging sensations may come from friction among hinge parts and from the flexibility of the components. That general explanation is not a diagnosis: if the phone’s movement changes suddenly, the screen malfunctions, or you see damage, consult support or service guidance for the exact model.

Can dust or sand damage a foldable phone hinge?
Yes. Sand, grit, and other small particles can pose a risk to the hinge and display. Water resistance does not establish dust resistance: Samsung specifies IPX8 water resistance for the Fold3 and Flip3, while warning that those models are not dust-resistant and should be kept away from sand and small particles. That is old, model-specific guidance, not a rating for every foldable; check the specifications for the exact model. Samsung UK’s Fold3 and Flip3 guidance explains the distinction.
How to reduce everyday wear
- Keep the hinge and inner screen away from sand, grit, and small particles.
- Keep sharp objects and hard pressure away from the flexible screen and fold; make sure nothing is between the two display surfaces when closing the phone.
- Leave the factory inner-display film in place unless the manufacturer’s current model-specific instructions say otherwise. Seek authorized service if it lifts or detaches.
- Consider a foldable-specific protective accessory if you want one, and confirm it fits your model. A case is optional; it should not be treated as a guarantee against hinge or display failure. Samsung Gulf recommends foldable-specific protective accessories.
- For a symptom or damage concern, use the manufacturer’s support or authorized service guidance for your exact phone rather than relying on a general fold-count figure.
What fold-count claims can—and cannot—tell you
Claims from different tests are not automatically comparable. A useful comparison should identify the model, what was folded (a panel, hinge, or complete phone), who conducted or verified the test, and the conditions. It should also account for the display’s protective layers, dust and water ratings, and region-specific warranty and repair options.

The available figures here come from Samsung and Samsung Display, with Bureau Veritas named as the test organization for the reported panel test and Samsung’s earlier Fold3/Flip3 test. They do not establish neutral, cross-brand failure rates in ordinary ownership. A higher published cycle count alone is therefore not enough to rank brands or predict which phone will last longer in a particular person’s use.
