That lets you frame yourself or a group using the outward-facing cameras instead of the inward-facing selfie camera. The exact controls depend on the phone model; the steps below are for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6.
How the cover-screen selfie works
When the phone is folded, its rear cameras point toward you and the cover screen becomes the viewfinder. You can see the framing and use the available camera controls on the outside display while taking a photo or recording video.
On the Galaxy Z Flip6, Samsung says the rear camera can take selfies or record video while the device is folded. Its manual documents this workflow and the controls below: Galaxy Z Flip6 user manual.
Take a rear-camera selfie on a Galaxy Z Flip6
- Open Camera. From the cover screen, drag outward from the large circle to launch Camera, or double-press the Side button.
- Frame the shot. Point the rear cameras toward yourself. Use the cover-screen preview to compose the image.
- Adjust the view if needed. Swipe the preview to change shooting mode or pinch to zoom.
- Capture. Tap the screen, press a Volume button, or show your palm to trigger the photo or video. Samsung also says you can add the camera button to the cover screen.
Use the hinge for a posed shot
Samsung documents another Z Flip6 option: unfold the phone and set it upright while the cover-screen camera remains active until the device reaches a certain angle. Its dual-preview feature can show the scene on both the main and cover screens; recording or timer information appears on the cover display. This can help when you want to pose without holding the phone.

Other foldables can use a partly folded hinge as a support. Samsung describes propping a phone in an L shape for hands-free use, including selfies, in its Flex mode support guide. Flex mode is not the same feature as taking a folded Z Flip selfie with the rear-camera preview on the cover screen. Compatibility varies by app, and Samsung’s Galaxy foldable support information lists model-specific inclusions and exclusions.
How the workflow differs by phone
| Device or feature | What the manufacturer documents | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 | Launch Camera from the cover screen or by double-pressing the Side button; use the cover display to frame a rear-camera selfie while folded. Capture by tapping, using Volume, or showing a palm. | The instructions are specific to the Z Flip6. Other models may have different controls or behavior. |
| Samsung Flex mode on foldables | A partly folded phone can be propped in an L shape for hands-free use; a camera timer is one way to pose. | App compatibility and supported models vary. This is hinge-supported use, not automatically the folded cover-screen selfie workflow. |
| Motorola razr fold | Motorola’s 2026 user guide describes a rear-camera selfie on the main display when folded and on the external display after unfolding. | The folded and unfolded interactions differ from Samsung’s Z Flip6 instructions. Check the guide for the exact device and software. |
Motorola’s razr fold product page also promotes rear-camera selfies and lists external and internal selfie cameras. Those are manufacturer product claims, not independent comparisons.

What to check when comparing foldables
If this feature matters to you, compare the exact model and software rather than relying on the general label “foldable.” Check:
- Whether the rear-camera preview appears on the cover or external display while the phone is folded.
- Whether the workflow also works when the phone is partly or fully unfolded.
- Which triggers are available: screen tap, Volume button, palm gesture, or timer.
- Whether the hinge can rest steadily for hands-free framing.
- What framing and zoom controls are available, and how the camera’s field of view suits your intended shot.
- Whether the feature is documented for your specific model and software version.
Does a rear-camera selfie look better?
Using the rear cameras gives you a way to frame the shot on the outside screen, but it does not establish that the rear camera will always produce a better selfie than the front camera. Results depend on the phone, selected camera and mode, lighting, and image processing. The Samsung and Motorola documentation cited here explains feature behavior; it does not provide a controlled comparison of rear- and front-camera image quality.
