Those systems can improve the experience, but they do not guarantee lasting growth: a game also needs enough players to sustain good matches and ongoing engagement.
What does it mean to build a player base?
Player-base growth is more than attracting people to download or buy a game. A healthy online community needs new players to try it, enough of them to find opponents, and a meaningful share to keep playing. These are different outcomes, and a publisher’s sales figure does not reveal how many people are currently active or how many return over time.
For example, Capcom reported that Street Fighter 6 passed 7 million worldwide unit sales on June 9, 2026. That is a sales milestone, not a count of active players or a measured retention rate. Capcom’s announcement does not establish how many buyers play online today.
Make online matches dependable
Online play is the product experience, not just a connection option. Players notice delay, interruptions, and inconsistent performance most when a close match turns on a precise input. Reliable infrastructure gives them a reason to trust the result and queue again.

Riot Games says it prioritized online play while building 2XKO, including through online playtests. Its account describes rollback netcode and a client-server architecture, chosen in part to support four-player matches and more consistent performance and scalability. These are details of Riot’s implementation and rationale, not proof that every fighting game should use the same architecture. Riot’s explanation of how 2XKO handles online play provides the technical context.
Riot also describes a Game Validation Server that runs a copy of each competitive match and supplies information to ranking services. The company says it uses this for anti-cheat and skill ratings, with Microsoft TrueSkill 2 helping estimate a player’s skill over a handful of games. Those are reported design goals; the source does not provide an independent assessment of their effectiveness.
Find a fair match without making players wait forever
A matchmaker has to balance two goals: short queues and opponents of similar skill. When many people are online, a system has a larger pool to search. At quiet hours, insisting on a very narrow skill range can leave a player waiting, while widening the range may produce a less even match. Riot specifically notes this trade-off for 2XKO, contrasting peak hours with a smaller pool around 3 a.m.; the balance between wait time and skill disparity can be tuned.
2XKO offers lobby challenges, cabinet queues, and matchmaking. Riot says its cross-lobby matchmaking searches across online lobbies, enlarging the pool beyond the player’s current lobby; after the match, players return to that lobby. The idea is to keep the social space intact while avoiding a queue restricted to whoever happens to be standing there.

- Turbo Function (unavailable on Switch).
- Bluetooth and rechargeable battery.

When comparing online games, consider both how quickly they find a match and how well the match fits the players. A fast queue is not automatically a fair one, and a narrow skill match is not useful if the wait becomes unreasonable. Population varies by region, platform, time of day, and game, so no system can promise the same result at every hour.
Make the first matches approachable without removing depth
New players can be discouraged by the gap between understanding a move and executing it under pressure. Alternate control options can reduce that initial barrier while leaving room to learn timing, spacing, matchups, and strategy.
Capcom presents Street Fighter 6’s Modern Controls as an option that lets players perform special attacks without complex button combinations. That is a concrete accessibility choice, not evidence that the feature produced a particular retention increase or that it determines competitive balance. Capcom’s description of Street Fighter 6 frames the game as serving a wide range of players.
Controls are only one part of onboarding. Clear tutorials, practice opportunities, readable feedback, and a route from beginner matches toward ranked play can help newcomers turn a first session into a learning routine. These are useful design levers, but their impact depends on execution and on whether new players can find appropriate opponents.

Turn lobbies into places to learn and belong
Social features can make online play feel less like a series of anonymous queues. Direct challenges let friends or rivals meet on purpose; shared lobbies make it easier to encounter other players; spectating gives people something to do while waiting and a chance to see how others use a character.
In 2XKO, Riot describes lobby spectating as a way to watch ongoing matches, learn techniques, see character choices, or cheer for friends. Its server-side spectating uses a current game-state snapshot to bring a viewer into a match in progress. The purpose is clear, but Riot does not report that spectating alone measurably increases retention.
These features work best when they support several kinds of play: a newcomer can observe before joining, friends can challenge one another, and experienced players can share knowledge. Social structure can make practice and competition feel communal rather than solitary, while still depending on a sufficient population to keep the spaces lively.
Give players reasons to return
Ongoing content
New characters and other updates can renew interest, give players fresh goals, and create moments for lapsed players to check back in. Capcom says it continued adding characters to Street Fighter 6 after launch and announced four new characters for the game’s fourth year. It also identifies esports as an effort to expand the user base. These are publisher strategies; the cited announcement does not isolate their causal effect on sales or retention. Capcom’s announcement describes those plans alongside the sales milestone.

Competition rooted in the community
Competition can give players a reason to improve and a recurring calendar of events. A publisher can support that ecosystem by helping existing organizers with funding, visibility, or prize pools instead of building a separate circuit that competes with local events.
Riot announced a 2026 plan for 20 sanctioned 2XKO tournaments, divided as follows:
| Event tier | Announced 2026 count |
|---|---|
| Majors | 5 |
| Challengers | 15 |
The figures are from Riot’s 2025 announcement of its 2026 plan, not a confirmation that every event was held. Riot said the approach would support existing fighting-game events with funding, official promotion, and prize-pool support. Riot’s competitive-play announcement describes the planned structure.

Riot’s account of 2XKO is a useful counterweight to the idea that a well-designed feature set automatically creates a large, durable community. Riot said it hoped a free-to-play game would make fighting games more accessible and discoverable, earn trust among core players, and grow as features and content arrived. It also said that free-to-play ambitions require a minimum player base.

Riot reported that committed pockets of the fighting-game community embraced the game, brought friends, formed duos, and added it to tournament lineups, but that the response did not reach sufficient scale. The company said it evaluated revenue, retention, new players, and engagement through 2026. It described positive reactions around releases and competitive events without a meaningful sustained change in trajectory, and announced that active development would end in December 2026. Riot said the servers would remain online and the game would remain free to download on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. These are Riot’s own reported findings and plans, not an independent audit. Riot’s 2XKO update does not publish numeric retention, monthly active-user, or engagement series.
The practical lesson is to separate the quality of a game’s systems from the scale and durability of its audience. Netcode, approachable controls, social play, content, and events can each address a real player need. Whether they add up to a sustainable community depends on observed participation over time, not on the feature list alone.
How to judge an online fighting game’s player experience
When choosing a game or assessing its online health, look for evidence across several dimensions rather than relying on a single headline metric:
Quick Recap
- Connection quality: Does online play feel stable, and are the game’s architecture and performance expectations clearly explained?
- Match access: Are queues practical at the times and in the region you play, or do low-population periods create long waits or uneven matches?
- Skill fit: Does the game place newcomers and experienced players into appropriately challenging matches as their skill becomes clearer?
- Learning and entry: Are control options, tutorials, practice tools, and ways to watch other players available?
- Social and competitive play: Can you play with friends, encounter a broader community, and find events that fit your level of commitment?
- Ongoing health: Are updates and events accompanied by signs of sustained engagement? Sales, event counts, and enthusiastic community pockets are useful context, but they are not substitutes for disclosed active-player or retention data.
