There is no single California-wide setback that makes every beach safe. A conservative approach is to stand farther back than seems necessary, obey the beach’s posted signs and lifeguard or park-staff instructions, and treat any distance as a changing margin rather than a guarantee. The National Weather Service warns that a sneaker wave can run at least 150 feet (45 meters) into dry sand. At Point Reyes National Seashore, the National Park Service gives a specific local instruction: stay at least 30 yards from the water on named open-ocean beaches, including Great Beach, McClures Beach and Kehoe Beach.
Those figures describe hazards and local guidance, not a statewide legal minimum. Surf, beach slope, exposure, tide, access routes and warnings can change within minutes. Check current conditions, watch the ocean before settling in and keep a clear route away from the water.
Why a fixed California distance does not exist
California’s shoreline is not one uniform environment. A gently sloping, sheltered beach behaves differently from a steep, open-ocean beach. One location may have a broad area of dry sand above the normal swash line; another may narrow quickly at high tide or have rocks, bluffs and access points that can be cut off. Local agencies therefore issue beach-specific advice instead of one number for the entire state.
The National Weather Service (NWS) describes sneaker waves as unexpectedly large waves that surge farther up the beach than the preceding wave pattern suggests. They can sweep people into the ocean even when the water looked calm for several minutes. Point Reyes National Seashore uses the same term for waves that reach farther up the beach than normal waves. The practical consequence is that the waterline you observe when you arrive is not a reliable boundary for where the next wave can reach.

Use the largest applicable margin: follow a posted distance or closure first, then the advice of lifeguards or park staff, then the active surf, weather and tide information. If none of those sources gives a number, move well back on dry sand and continue observing rather than choosing an arbitrary line.
What the published numbers actually mean

The NWS’s 150-foot statement should not be read as “150 feet is always enough.” It says sneaker waves can reach at least that far under some conditions, so a larger surge is not ruled out. Nor does it establish a maximum distance a wave can travel. Conversely, the 30-yard Point Reyes instruction is useful because it is tied to named beaches and an agency that manages those sites; it does not set a standard for beaches elsewhere.
How to choose your position before you sit down
- Read the local information first. Look for signs, closure notices and hazard boards at the entrance. Check the managing agency’s current beach information, the local weather forecast, surf forecast and tide forecast immediately before you go.
- Ask staff when they are present. Lifeguards, rangers and other park staff can tell you whether the current surf, tide or access conditions require more distance than the usual visitor guidance.
- Watch the ocean for at least 20 minutes. The NWS recommends observing for this period before relaxing or recreating. Look at how far successive waves reach, whether occasional waves travel beyond the regular swash and whether the waterline is advancing with the tide. A quiet interval is not proof that the next wave will be small.
- Stand above the active wet-sand area. Dry sand is not automatically safe, because the NWS warning specifically notes that a sneaker wave can cross dry beach. Move farther inland if the beach is steep, the surf is large or the water has already reached the area where you planned to sit.
- Keep an escape route. Do not choose a position between the surf and a cliff, bluff, rock outcrop, lagoon channel or other obstacle if the route could be cut off. Redwood National and State Parks warns that tides can cut off access points; a safe position includes a way to leave without moving toward the water.
- Reassess instead of settling permanently. Tide level, surf sets and weather can change during a visit. If waves begin reaching closer, relocate immediately rather than waiting to see whether the pattern continues.
How beach type and activity change the margin
Open-ocean beaches
Open-ocean beaches are exposed to incoming swell and can produce occasional waves that exceed the ordinary pattern. Point Reyes specifically tells visitors to stay at least 30 yards from the water on the named open-ocean beaches at that seashore. Treat that as a minimum local instruction: move farther back when signs, staff or current conditions call for it.

Steep or narrow beaches
On a steep beach, a wave can gain elevation quickly as it runs up the slope, while a narrow beach leaves less room to retreat. Redwood National and State Parks warns that sneaker waves can run hundreds of feet up the beach slope within 30 seconds. That warning is local, but it demonstrates why measuring from the visible waterline can be misleading. If the beach rises sharply or the dry-sand area is narrow, choose a higher, wider area or a different location.
Rocky edges and outcrops
California State Parks identifies slippery rock outcrops, sudden drop-offs, pounding shorebreak, backwash and rip currents among hazards that can make ordinary shoreline play dangerous. The NWS and Point Reyes guidance also warn against approaching slippery rocks, especially during storms, high tide or tidal changes. A position that is technically far enough from the water can still be unsafe if a wave can knock you onto rocks or if retreat requires crossing them.
Swimming, wading and children’s play
Standing on dry sand is a different activity from entering the surf. California State Parks lists large surf, cold water, sudden drop-offs, backwash, shorebreak and rip currents as reasons shoreline conditions can become deadly. Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard-protected beach and obey every posted warning. A 30-yard sitting distance is not permission to swim, wade or let children play near the break.

Fishing, agate hunting and other surf-adjacent activities
Some activities require approaching the surfline, which changes the risk calculation. An NWS Eureka safety brochure mentions a life vest as a consideration for activities such as surf fishing or agate hunting. That is a conditional measure for a specific activity, not a general recommendation for ordinary beach visitors and not a substitute for moving back when waves are hazardous. If your activity requires you to work near the water, obtain current local advice and reassess whether the activity should proceed.
Objects and places that make a “safe” distance deceptive
Logs and driftwood
Do not sit or stand on logs near the surf or wet sand. Sneaker waves can move waterlogged logs, turning a seemingly stable seat into a moving impact hazard. Keep people and equipment away from the surfline’s debris zone, especially when waves are reaching farther than usual.
Slippery rocks
Wet rocks can be unstable underfoot, and a wave can remove your footing before you can retreat. Avoid rock outcrops during storms, high tide and tidal changes, and never use a rock platform as a substitute for a broad, open section of beach.

Blocked access
Redwood National and State Parks notes that tides can cut off access points. Check both directions along the beach before choosing a spot. If a rising tide could leave you between water and a cliff, move inland while an easy route remains available.

This framework prevents a common error: comparing beaches only by the distance from the current waterline. The physical setting and the activity can matter as much as the number of feet or yards.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the 150-foot figure as a guarantee. It is a warning about possible run-up, not a certified safe line.
- Applying Point Reyes’ 30 yards everywhere. The instruction names particular Point Reyes open-ocean beaches; it is not statewide law or a statewide minimum.
- Relaxing after a short calm spell. The NWS recommends at least 20 minutes of observation because an ordinary set does not define the largest wave that may arrive.
- Turning your back on the ocean. Keep watching the water, particularly while standing near the edge of the dry beach or moving around obstacles.
- Ignoring changing tides. A route that was open on arrival may narrow or disappear. Recheck it as conditions change.
- Assuming a dry beach is risk-free. Sneaker waves can cross dry sand, and cold water, backwash, shorebreak and rip currents create hazards even when the beach looks ordinary.
- Relying on equipment to solve a positioning problem. A measuring device does not make a location safe. A life vest is relevant only to certain surf-adjacent activities and does not replace local guidance.
Applying the guidance to typical visits
Picnic or sunbathing on a broad beach
Read the signs, check forecasts, observe for 20 minutes and choose a broad area well above the active wet sand. Keep watching the surf and move inland if wave reach increases. Do not sit on driftwood near the water.
Visiting a Point Reyes open-ocean beach
Begin with the National Park Service’s instruction to stay at least 30 yards from the water on Great Beach, McClures Beach and Kehoe Beach. Treat that as a minimum starting point, then increase the margin for large surf, a rising tide, a steep slope or any staff warning.
Exploring the Redwood Coast
Expect steep-beach and fast-run-up concerns described by Redwood National and State Parks. Identify an inland retreat route before walking down, and leave enough time to return before tides cut off access. Do not interpret the “hundreds of feet in 30 seconds” warning as a prediction for every visit; use it as a reason to take local conditions seriously.

Distance from the waterline is not the right safety metric once you enter the surf. Choose a lifeguard-protected beach whenever possible, follow posted warnings and account for cold water, large surf, sudden drop-offs, backwash, shorebreak and rip currents.
What to remember when conditions are uncertain
The safest decision may be to move farther inland, choose another beach or end the visit. Official pages do not establish a current statewide incident or fatality statistic that would justify a numerical risk estimate, and the available guidance is intentionally behavior-based. Conditions are volatile, so check the local information again immediately before going rather than relying on a previous visit or an old forecast.
Use the 30-yard figure only where Point Reyes says to use it, treat the NWS 150-foot run-up as a warning rather than a boundary, and let current signs, staff advice, surf, tide and your planned activity determine the final position.
