Adding one makes its catalog available; it does not install its apps. You can add a repository from a link, a QR code, or the client’s repository settings. Before trusting a new source, get its address from a channel you trust and, if its maintainer publishes a signing-key fingerprint, compare it with a value obtained independently.
What an F-Droid repository does
F-Droid is the client; a repository is a separate source of app metadata and packages. The official F-Droid repository is enabled by default, but you can add other repositories or disable sources. A custom repository may simply distribute APK files obtained elsewhere—it does not necessarily build apps from source. F-Droid’s repository setup guide describes the structure and setup of custom sources.
The repository publishes an index describing available apps and packages. F-Droid documents signed index formats, including a signed JAR containing v1 index data and v2 JSON indexes. Its API documentation describes the formats and signature verification; the official repository documentation recommends verifying a v1 JAR signature before extracting its index.
Repository signatures and app signatures are different
The repository signing key identifies the repository and protects its index. Android package signing identifies the signer of an installed app. These are related but distinct checks: F-Droid says repository signatures are used to verify the integrity of the index and APKs, and the client performs that verification automatically. How to add a repository in F-Droid
F-Droid’s repository tutorial describes three ways to add a source. The exact prompts can differ between client versions, so follow the current screen if its labels differ from these steps.
Add it from a repository link
- On your Android device, open the repository link supplied by its maintainer or another source you trust.
- Choose “Add to F-Droid” when Android offers that option.
- Review the address prefilled in F-Droid and confirm to add the repository.
Add it with a QR code
- Open F-Droid’s repository QR-code flow and scan the code provided by the repository maintainer.
- When prompted, open the resulting link in F-Droid and confirm the repository details.
Enter the address manually
- Open F-Droid and go to Settings > Repositories.
- Tap the plus icon. Enter the repository address, or use the address populated by a link if available.
- Review the details and enable the repository.
You can view configured sources under Settings > Repositories. Adding a source only exposes its catalog in the client; you still select any apps you want to install. F-Droid’s setup guide says /fdroid/repo/ is a customary repository path, but repositories can use other URLs; it prefers HTTPS.

How to check a repository before trusting it
- Verify where the address came from. Get the URL from the maintainer or another channel you already trust. The add flow makes a repository easy to configure, but the flow itself does not establish that the person who supplied the link is trustworthy.
- Check the signing-key fingerprint independently. If the maintainer provides a fingerprint, compare it with the value from a separate trusted channel—not merely another location on the same page or message as the repository link. F-Droid’s mirror documentation shows an example repository URL with a SHA-256 fingerprint parameter.
- Stop if the key changes or does not match. Because the signing key is part of the repository’s identity, do not proceed until you have checked with the maintainer through a separately trusted channel.
- Review the catalog before installing. Adding the repository does not install its apps. Inspect what it offers and choose deliberately.
- Leave the official source enabled unless you have a reason to disable it. F-Droid lets you manage sources individually; adding a custom one does not require turning off the default repository.
How to assess a repository’s maintainer
When deciding whether to use a source, consider who operates it and how you obtained its address, whether you can independently confirm its fingerprint, what apps and update cadence it offers, and whether its maintainer explains signing, security, and support practices. These are questions to investigate, not guarantees that a repository meets a particular standard.

For operators, the central risk is exposing the signing key. F-Droid’s setup guide says a quick in-place demonstration is not an adequate setup for a real public repository. Its recommended pattern is to create the repository on a non-public machine, keep configuration and keystore there, back them up, and deploy to a separate server over SSH. As the guide puts it, “the repo signing keys should not ever be on a public server.”

F-Droid’s signing process documentation describes generating a key with fdroid init or configuring one manually, and emphasizes keeping the key secure and backed up for the repository’s lifetime. The signing documentation and signing-server guidance also describe more controlled signing arrangements, including signing servers and hardware security modules. Those are operator security options, not requirements for someone adding a repository in the client.
