An evaporative air cooler draws outdoor air through water-wetted pads. As water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, lowering its temperature while adding moisture. That makes a direct evaporative cooler most useful in dry weather—and means it needs an open window, vent, or other route for air to leave the space.
How does an evaporative air cooler work?
A direct evaporative cooler—also called a swamp cooler or desert cooler—uses a fan to pull outdoor air through wet, porous pads. A pump or water-distribution system keeps the pads wet. Some water evaporates into the moving air, taking heat with it. The air leaving the pads is cooler, but also more humid. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes this supply of outdoor air as distinct from recirculating indoor air (DOE homeowner HVAC guide, August 2011).

The cooling comes from evaporation, not from a refrigeration cycle that removes heat from indoor air. As a result, the incoming air’s moisture level is central to performance: dry air can accept more water vapor than humid air.
When do evaporative coolers cool best?
Direct evaporative coolers generally work best when outdoor air is dry and its wet-bulb temperature is low. Wet-bulb temperature reflects both air temperature and moisture; consistently low wet-bulb conditions are important for traditional residential evaporative cooling, limiting where it is a practical choice. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program puts it simply: “Since cooling relies on evaporation, these coolers work best in arid climates” (DOE water-management guidance).

In humid weather, evaporation is less effective, so the cooler has less scope to lower the air temperature. The moisture it adds can also make a room feel less comfortable. DOE’s overview of home cooling discusses evaporative cooling alongside the role of climate in choosing a cooling approach (DOE Home Cooling).
There is no universal temperature drop: results depend on the entering air’s dry-bulb and wet-bulb conditions, the cooler’s effectiveness and airflow, and the installation. DOE’s August 2011 homeowner guide gives a possible 15°F to 40°F reduction for direct, single-stage units. That is a broad figure in a dated guide, not a prediction or guarantee for a particular model, home, or day (DOE homeowner HVAC guide).
Do you need to open a window when using a swamp cooler?
Yes, a direct cooler needs an exhaust path. It supplies outdoor air to the home, so a window, vent, or other opening must allow indoor air to leave. Without an exit route, incoming air cannot flow through the space as intended. Think of the setup as a supply-and-exhaust path rather than a closed room with recirculated air.
Direct vs. indirect evaporative cooling
“Evaporative cooler” can describe more than one design. The key difference is whether the supply air passes directly through the wet stage. DOE’s residential HVAC overview describes indirect and combined indirect/direct systems (DOE Building Technologies Office overview).

In cooling mode, if there is no water or relatively little water in the water tank, the water pump will automatically stop working and stop pumping
| Design | How cooling happens | Effect on supply-air humidity | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct, single-stage | Outdoor supply air passes across wetted pads. | Adds moisture. | Relies on dry outdoor air and an exhaust path through the building. |
| Indirect | A separate wet airstream cools supply air across an air-to-air heat exchanger. | Does not directly add moisture to the supply air. | Separates the supply air from the wet stage and requires another airflow path and a heat exchanger. |
| Indirect/direct | An indirect stage precools supply air before it passes through a direct evaporative stage. | Adds some moisture in the direct stage. | Can provide additional cooling compared with the indirect stage alone, with moisture added by the direct stage. |
Water, energy, and maintenance
A direct cooler needs water for evaporation and electricity to run its fan and pump. Water use varies with the unit and operating conditions; the cited DOE sources do not establish a universal figure. DOE’s August 2011 guide says evaporative coolers can use about one-quarter as much energy as central air conditioners. Treat that as a broad comparison from that guide, not a current model-specific measurement or a savings estimate for an individual home (DOE homeowner HVAC guide).
Minerals left behind as water evaporates can build up on pads, restrict airflow, and reduce performance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which can vary with the model and water quality. DOE recommends keeping water equipment leak-free, monitoring water flow against the manufacturer’s recommendations, checking pump and reservoir controls periodically during warm-month operation, and replacing pads that are worn or torn (DOE water-management guidance).
- Inspect pads and replace them if they are damaged or worn.
- Clean and inspect the reservoir and water-distribution components as directed in the manual.
- Check the pump, reservoir controls, and water flow during operation, following the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Use replacement pads only when their dimensions and compatibility match your specific cooler.
Is an evaporative cooler a fit for your home?
DOE’s August 2011 homeowner guide calls evaporative coolers an effective, less expensive alternative to compressor-based air conditioners for homes in dry climates. That is a qualified general observation, not evidence of current prices or a guarantee that a cooler will suit every home (DOE homeowner HVAC guide).
- Climate: Dry outdoor air and low wet-bulb conditions favor direct evaporative cooling; humid conditions limit it.
- Moisture: A direct unit increases supply-air humidity. An indirect design avoids directly humidifying the supply air, while an indirect/direct system adds moisture in its direct stage.
- Airflow: Direct units bring outdoor air inside, so the building needs an exhaust opening.
- Upkeep: The water system and pads need inspection and care, especially where mineral deposits accumulate.
- System choice: A portable evaporative air cooler is one product type, but no current model ranking, capacity, price, or specific performance is established here. Do not assume replacement pads fit across models.
Residential direct evaporative coolers are distinct from evaporatively cooled commercial unitary air conditioners, a separate regulated product category; the residential guidance above should not be used to infer commercial equipment requirements.
