Short answer: leverage lets you control a larger ETH perpetual-futures position with a smaller amount of collateral. A 10x position can lose roughly 10% of its posted margin after a 1% adverse ETH move, before fees and funding. Liquidation begins when your account equity falls below the contract’s maintenance-margin requirement. Depending on the exchange, collateral mode, execution price and jurisdiction, the final deficit can exceed the margin you initially deposited.

Your leverage setting is not a promise that losses stop at your deposit. To understand the real risk, you must check the contract’s maintenance-margin tiers, mark-price method, liquidation process, collateral scope and any negative-balance protection that applies to your account.

What an ETH perpetual future is

An Ethereum perpetual future is a derivative contract whose value tracks ETH without a scheduled expiry date. You do not own the underlying ether when you open the contract; you hold a long position if you expect ETH to rise or a short position if you expect it to fall. Your profit and loss is calculated from the contract’s mark price and settled under the exchange’s margin rules.

Because there is no expiry, the position can remain open while you continue to meet margin requirements and pay or receive funding. Funding payments periodically transfer money between long and short traders to keep the perpetual contract near its reference spot price. The interval, rate, caps and who pays whom are exchange- and contract-specific.

Exchange specifications are not permanent. For example, Binance publishes separate ETHUSDT and ETHUSD perpetual contracts with leverage tiers and maintenance-margin rates. Those parameters can change and may affect an open position, so the current contract specification and risk notice matter more than a generic leverage number shown in an older guide.

How leverage changes your exposure

Leverage is the ratio between your position’s notional value and the collateral assigned to it:

Leverage = position notional ÷ initial margin

If you post $1,000 and open a $10,000 ETH position, your nominal leverage is 10x. A 1% move against the position changes its mark-to-market value by approximately $100:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Long position: ETH falls 1%, producing about a $100 loss.
  • Short position: ETH rises 1%, producing about a $100 loss.
  • $100 is 10% of the $1,000 initial margin.

This is arithmetic, not a historical market result and not a venue-specific liquidation calculation. It excludes trading fees, funding, spread, slippage and differences between the traded price and the mark price. A 10% adverse move would approximately consume the $1,000 initial margin before those additional effects and before any maintenance-margin buffer is considered.

Notional size matters more than the leverage label

Two traders can both select 10x but face different dollar risks if their position sizes differ. A $2,000 collateral allocation controlling $20,000 of ETH has about twice the dollar exposure of a $1,000 allocation controlling $10,000. Increasing leverage can also reduce the collateral required for the same notional, leaving less room for an adverse move.

Leverage does not make ETH less volatile. It magnifies the percentage change in your margin equity because a relatively small price movement is applied to a much larger notional position.

What triggers liquidation

Liquidation is a risk-control process, not a price target guaranteed by your leverage setting. It becomes possible when the equity supporting a position no longer satisfies the venue’s maintenance-margin requirement.

Initial margin versus maintenance margin

  • Initial margin is the collateral required to open the position. Your selected leverage largely determines this amount, subject to the exchange’s minimums and risk tiers.
  • Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires to keep the position open. It is usually lower than initial margin, but it can increase as notional size moves into a higher risk tier.
  • Equity is the relevant collateral plus or minus unrealized profit and loss, and may also reflect fees, funding and other account adjustments under the venue’s rules.

When equity falls to, or below, the maintenance threshold, the exchange can start forced closeout. A displayed liquidation price is therefore an estimate based on the contract’s current mark price, maintenance tier, fees, funding assumptions and collateral available to that position. It is not a universal ETH price at which every trader will be liquidated.

Why the mark price can matter more than the last traded price

Many derivatives venues use a mark price derived from an index of spot markets, often with a funding or basis adjustment, to calculate unrealized profit and trigger liquidation. The last trade on the exchange can differ from that mark price. A brief wick in the order book may not trigger liquidation if the mark price does not reach the threshold; conversely, a mark-price move can trigger liquidation even when the last traded price on your screen appears safer.

Why your final loss can exceed the amount deposited

The initial deposit is collateral for the position, not a guaranteed maximum liability on every venue. Several mechanisms can push the realized loss beyond that amount.

Fast markets and closeout slippage

During a sharp ETH move, the exchange may not be able to close your position at the displayed liquidation estimate. The position can be filled at a worse price, creating a deficit after the collateral is exhausted. Thin order-book liquidity, a gap between prices and a sudden volatility spike increase this execution risk.

Fees and funding continue to affect equity

Opening and closing commissions, periodic funding transfers and any liquidation fee reduce equity. A position that appears to have enough room based only on its entry price may cross the maintenance threshold sooner after these charges are included.

Cross collateral can expose other balances

In a cross or portfolio-margin account, gains and losses flow through a shared pool. If an ETH position loses money, the system can use available derivatives collateral beyond the amount you mentally assigned to that trade. Coinbase documents ETH as an accepted cross-collateral asset for perpetual-futures positions and states that liquidation can occur when portfolio margin falls below maintenance margin. The exact assets and haircuts are venue-specific.

Negative-balance rules depend on venue and jurisdiction

Coinbase’s current risk disclosure says liquidation can produce less-favorable pricing and higher fees, can exceed margin value, and may deplete derivatives and spot balances. It also says a resulting deficit can be the trader’s responsibility, with an exception for EEA retail customers covered by its negative-balance protection. That exception is not a universal crypto-futures rule: your country, customer classification, product and agreement control.

The Coinbase Derivatives rulebook filed with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 2023 states: “Futures trading is not suitable for all investors, and involves the risk of loss.” It also says, “it is possible to lose more than the amount of money deposited for a futures position.” Read the risk disclosure and customer agreement that apply to your account before assuming your liability is capped.

Isolated margin versus cross or portfolio margin

Feature Isolated margin Cross/portfolio margin
Collateral pool Funds assigned to one position or trading pair Shared pool across eligible positions and assets
Effect of liquidation Generally limited to the collateral allocated to that position, subject to venue rules Losses can draw on broader derivatives collateral and supported assets
Capital efficiency Lower; unused balances do not automatically support the position Potentially higher because profitable positions or spare collateral can support losses
Main risk trade-off Clearer position-level loss boundary, but the allocated amount can still be lost More room before liquidation, but one losing ETH trade can consume shared balances
Liquidation calculation Uses that position’s equity and maintenance requirement Uses portfolio equity, correlations, haircuts and maintenance requirements

Binance defines isolated margin as an independent account for a trading pair; if that position is liquidated, the risk is limited to funds allocated to that pair under its rules. Coinbase similarly distinguishes isolated positions from cross or portfolio margin, where profits and losses flow through a shared pool. “Limited” does not mean harmless: an isolated position can still lose all allocated collateral and may incur additional liability where the applicable agreement allows it.

What happens during liquidation

  1. Equity approaches maintenance margin. Unrealized loss, funding and fees reduce the equity supporting the position.
  2. The venue issues a warning or starts automatic closeout. Warning thresholds and timing differ; a warning is not a guarantee that you can add collateral in time.
  3. The exchange takes control of the position. It may cancel orders, reduce the position or submit liquidation orders according to its engine and risk tiers.
  4. The position is filled. The execution price can be worse than the displayed estimate because of volatility and liquidity.
  5. Residual losses are processed. An insurance fund, bankruptcy-price transfer or auto-deleveraging system may absorb or redistribute losses. If those mechanisms are insufficient, the account can show a deficit where the contract permits one.

Binance describes insurance-fund procedures for positions that cannot be liquidated before negative equity. Such backstops are venue-specific; they do not convert a leveraged contract into a product with guaranteed loss limits.

Estimating how far ETH can move before liquidation

A rough intuition for a one-position, no-fee, no-funding example is that a 10x position has about a 10% adverse-move distance from its entry before its initial margin is mathematically depleted. That is not the liquidation price. Maintenance margin, risk tiers, fees, funding, mark-price methodology and any extra collateral alter the result.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose a trader posts $1,000 for a $10,000 long ETH perpetual:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At entry, equity attributable to the position is approximately $1,000.
  • A 2% ETH decline produces an approximate $200 unrealized loss, leaving about $800 before charges.
  • A 5% decline produces an approximate $500 loss, leaving about $500 before charges.
  • A 10% decline produces an approximate $1,000 loss, theoretically exhausting the starting margin before maintenance, fees, funding, slippage and mark-price effects.

Actual liquidation may occur well before 10% because the exchange requires maintenance margin and may charge costs during closeout. It could occur at a different distance if the account uses cross collateral or if the position enters another maintenance tier.

Why no universal ETH liquidation percentage exists

To calculate a venue-specific estimate, you need at least the contract symbol, side, entry price, quantity, margin mode, leverage or initial margin, maintenance tier, mark-price formula, fee schedule, expected funding, collateral balance and any other open positions. Change any of those inputs and the result changes. Treat calculators as scenario tools, not promises.

How to check your actual risk before opening a position

  1. Identify the exact contract. Confirm whether it is ETHUSDT, ETHUSD or another quote and read the current specification.
  2. Record the notional and collateral. Write down position size in dollars, assigned margin and the resulting leverage.
  3. Choose margin mode deliberately. Use isolated if you want a position-specific collateral allocation; use cross only after understanding which balances and assets can be drawn.
  4. Read the maintenance tiers. Check the notional bracket and maintenance rate that apply at your intended size, including what happens if the position grows into a higher tier.
  5. Inspect mark-price and liquidation rules. Find the index sources, trigger formula, partial-liquidation process and liquidation fee.
  6. Model costs under stress. Include an adverse ETH move, several funding intervals, taker fees and a worse closeout price rather than relying on the headline liquidation number.
  7. Verify liability protection. Confirm your jurisdiction, retail or professional classification, eligible collateral and whether negative-balance protection is actually included in your agreement.
  8. Set a loss limit outside the exchange engine. A stop order can reduce exposure but is not guaranteed in a gap and does not replace margin planning.

Common mistakes and practical fixes

“My leverage is only 5x, so I cannot lose more than my deposit.”

Leverage describes the opening ratio, not the maximum legal or operational liability. Check cross collateral, closeout slippage and the agreement’s deficit language.

“The liquidation price is far away because ETH has not traded there.”

The trigger may use mark price rather than the last trade. Monitor the mark-price display and maintenance ratio, especially during volatile periods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Adding leverage does not change my dollar risk if I keep the same position.”

Keeping notional constant while lowering initial margin leaves less equity buffer. The dollar loss per ETH move is unchanged, but the percentage loss on margin rises.

“Cross margin is safer because it delays liquidation.”

It can delay a forced closeout, but it does so by putting more collateral at risk. Use isolated allocation when a position-level loss boundary is more important than capital efficiency.

“An insurance fund guarantees that I will never owe money.”

Insurance funds and auto-deleveraging are venue mechanisms with defined conditions and limits. Read the applicable liquidation policy; do not treat them as personal insurance.

Decision checklist

  • Can you state the contract’s current leverage cap and maintenance tiers?
  • Do you know whether liquidation uses mark price and how that mark is formed?
  • Is the position isolated, cross or portfolio margined, and which balances are eligible?
  • Have you included fees, funding and execution slippage in your stress case?
  • What happens if the account reaches negative equity?
  • Does your jurisdiction provide negative-balance protection, and does it cover this product and account type?
  • Would a total loss of the assigned collateral—and, under cross margin, other balances—be financially acceptable?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lose more than my ETH perpetual deposit on every exchange?

No. Liability depends on the venue’s contract, margin mode, jurisdiction, account classification and negative-balance terms. Some customers receive protection; others can be responsible for a deficit after liquidation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does isolated margin guarantee that I cannot owe anything else?

No. Isolated margin generally confines the collateral allocated to that position, but fees, closeout losses and the venue’s customer agreement still govern any residual liability.

Why was I liquidated even though ETH never touched my displayed liquidation price?

The exchange may use a mark price rather than the last traded price, and the estimate may have changed with maintenance tiers, funding, fees or other positions.

What is the safest leverage for an ETH perpetual?

There is no universally safe leverage. Lower notional exposure, sufficient collateral buffer, isolated margin and a stress test that includes fees, funding and slippage reduce—but do not remove—liquidation risk.
