Enshrouded ties construction, crafting and exploration to the Flame Altar, but two different Flame upgrades control different parts of progression. An individual altar expands one base’s buildable cube; Strengthen the Flame is global progression that improves attributes, Shroud survival and access to dangerous regions. Survivors, workstations and biome resources then turn that progression into new recipes, equipment and building materials.
The Flame Altar is the boundary for each base
Every permanent base is organized around a Flame Altar. The altar defines the volume in which you can build permanently and alter terrain. Inside that protected zone, you can excavate rooms, flatten or raise ground, place structural blocks and decorate with furniture and other props. Outside it, construction and terraforming are not available for permanent use.

A newly claimed altar provides a 40×40×40 build cube. Per-altar upgrades expand that volume to 80×80×80, then 120×120×120 and finally 160×160×160. These upgrades use Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus. The larger dimensions apply in all three axes, so an upgrade adds usable height and depth as well as floor area.

Place the altar on stable ground above the Shroud, then establish a compact shelter before spending materials on a large project. Because the boundary is cubic, moving the altar can change which floors, towers or underground rooms are inside the permitted volume. Plan the position before committing to a major terraforming job.

How building works in practice
Start with a functional protected zone
- Place a Flame Altar in a safe location above the Shroud.
- Build a small shelter and leave clear paths around the altar.
- Rescue the first crafting survivors through quests and exploration.
- Put the stations they provide, beds, storage and essential utilities inside the altar cube.
- Expand the altar only when the project or storage layout reaches the boundary.
Keeping workshops and storage close together reduces travel between crafting steps. Leave a route to the altar as the base grows; decorative walls, elevated platforms and terrain edits can otherwise make the center difficult to reach.
Voxel construction is more than furniture placement
Enshrouded uses voxel-based construction. Structural blocks, terrain materials and props can be combined with excavation and reshaping, allowing you to carve rooms into hills, level a courtyard or build directly into ruins. This is why the altar’s three-dimensional cube matters: a project can run out of space below ground or above a roof even when its floor plan still fits.

Terrain edits and permanent structures must remain within the active altar’s zone.
Tools added in the 1.0-era updates
The January 2025 Pact of the Flame update added a first-person building camera, full-axis rotation for decorative props, tools for editing overgrowth and decay, food and drink placement, and more than 70 new props and material additions. These options make detailed interiors and weathered or reclaimed exteriors easier to stage without changing the altar boundary.

The 1.0 release also introduced Airborne Architect, a free-flying building skill. It provides a construction-oriented way to move around a project while placing elements, which is particularly useful for roofs, towers and multi-level builds.
Sparkworks connects interactive elements through rules in a two-dimensional graph editor. Instead of treating a base as static decoration, you can create logic-driven interactions between compatible components. Build the basic shelter and workshop loop first; automation and elaborate logic are easier to maintain once storage, beds and stations have fixed locations.

Flame Altar level versus Strengthen the Flame
These names refer to separate progression systems. Confusing them explains many stalled builds and failed expeditions.

A large house does not prove that your character can survive the next biome. Conversely, a strong global Flame does not enlarge a cramped workshop. Choose the upgrade according to the bottleneck you are experiencing.

How crafting recipes and workstations unlock
Rescue the specialist who owns the next station
Crafting progression starts with survivors. Quests and exploration reveal specialists who can take refuge in your base. Their presence unlocks advanced workshops and recipe families, including the ability to craft epic weapons and armor. A recipe that appears unavailable may therefore require finding a particular survivor rather than collecting more of the same low-tier material.
Once a survivor is recruited, place the workstation they provide inside the protected altar area. Keep beds and storage nearby so the station remains part of the base’s practical production loop. Recruited specialists expand the network of stations; they do not replace the need to explore for materials.
Gather materials from the current biome
New stations consume resources from progressively more dangerous regions. Each biome supplies signature materials, boss resources and terrain components that feed later equipment, tools, food, potions and construction pieces. Stockpiling only early wood and stone will not satisfy a recipe from the next tier.
The efficient sequence is to identify the next survivor and station, explore the biome that supplies its inputs, collect the relevant boss or regional materials, and then return to craft. This avoids grinding for a recipe before its specialist, station or Flame requirement is available.

Understand the Flame gate on armor
The 1.0 release changelog states that upgrading the Flame automatically unlocks armor sets for the following crafting tier. That means some armor progression is tied directly to global Flame strength rather than an isolated workstation recipe. If a new armor tier is missing after you have gathered the expected materials, check the global Flame objective before assuming the station is broken.

Official update notes also document ongoing additions: Souls of the Frozen Frontier added a crafting tier, new stations, nine armor sets, six building-block materials and five terrain materials. Exact recipes and resource locations can change as updates expand the game, so verify the current requirements in the in-game crafting menus.
What to upgrade first
- Establish one safe altar. Claim a location above the Shroud and build enough shelter, beds and storage to support repeated expeditions.
- Recruit the first survivors. Their stations and recipe families provide more practical power than an oversized empty building.
- Cluster the core workshop. Keep stations, storage and travel routes inside the protected cube, with room to add the next specialist.
- Gather current-biome materials. Prioritize the signature resources and boss drops that feed the next equipment and workstation tier.
- Strengthen the global Flame when progression is blocked. Use it when you need more attributes, Shroud time, access to a deadly region or the next armor tier.
- Upgrade the local altar when construction is blocked. Spend Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus when the cube, storage plan or terraforming footprint—not combat power—is the limiting factor.
- Add decoration and automation last. Advanced props, Sparkworks logic and large terrain projects are easier to manage after the survival and crafting loop works reliably.
Why you cannot build outside the Flame Altar
The project is beyond the cube
The most common cause is simply that a wall, foundation or terrain edit crosses the altar’s three-dimensional boundary. Check the build-area visualization and compare the project’s height and depth, not only its distance across the ground. Towers and basements often hit the limit first.
The altar is too small for the planned footprint
Upgrade that specific altar with the required Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus, or redesign the project to fit. A global Strengthen the Flame upgrade will not enlarge this base.

The altar was moved
Relocating the altar changes the cube’s position. A room that was previously inside the boundary can become external after the move. Recheck the boundary before rebuilding or extending the structure.
You are treating temporary placement as permanent construction
Permanent structures and terrain edits require the active altar zone. If you need a second settlement, place another altar rather than attempting to extend the first base indefinitely. Global Flame progression can increase the maximum number of Flame Altars; the October 14, 2026 Keen Games 1.0 changelog says the next Flame level raises that maximum to 15.
Current 1.0 progression facts
Keen Games’ October 14, 2026 release changelog lists a maximum player level of 50 and gear up to level 55. It also introduces the Cinder’s Cradle region and a new crafting tier. These are version-sensitive values, so check the character, Flame and crafting menus after balance patches or content updates.
The same release notes describe Sparkworks, adventure sharing and Airborne Architect. Together with the Pact of the Flame building tools and the Souls of the Frozen Frontier crafting additions, they show that construction and production are still being expanded rather than fixed to the launch feature set.

A simple decision rule for every upgrade
- If you cannot place a wall, dig a room or fit storage inside the base, upgrade the individual Flame Altar.
- If the next region is lethal, your Shroud timer is too short or the next armor tier is locked, Strengthen the Flame.
- If a recipe is missing but your Flame is sufficient, look for the required survivor and workstation.
- If the station is available but crafting materials are missing, explore the current or next biome for its regional resources and boss drops.
