In Enshrouded, your character gains XP from combat, quests, discoveries, item-set completions, mining and Experience Scrolls. Filling the XP bar raises your character level and awards two Skill Points. In the current 1.0 progression guide updated October 17, 2026, the character-level cap is 50; upgraded gear can reach level 55, while Flame level follows a separate progression system.
The fastest reliable approach is to pursue quests while exploring, fight enemies close to your level and check custom-world XP multipliers before comparing your progress with another player. Party size changes the combat share each player receives, but a larger group may still clear objectives faster.

What XP controls in Enshrouded
Character XP fills the experience bar shown in your character interface. When the bar is full, your character gains one level and receives two Skill Points. Those points are spent in the skill tree, so leveling directly expands your build options.
XP is not limited to killing creatures. The current XP reference lists combat, quests, discoveries, item-set completions, mining and Experience Scrolls as sources. Because these activities reward different amounts and have different travel or risk costs, an efficient leveling route normally combines them instead of repeating one low-level enemy.

There are three progression tracks to keep separate:
- Character level: controlled by XP and responsible for the two Skill Points awarded at each level.
- Gear level: the strength rating of equipment. Ordinary drops do not make the current cap 55; the level-55 ceiling is reached through upgrades.
- Flame level: tied to altar-related world capabilities rather than the character XP bar. The 1.0 guide reports an altar cap of 15 before the final story progression and 16 after it.
Confusing these systems leads to common mistakes, such as expecting a Flame upgrade to fill the character XP bar or assuming level-55 equipment means the player-character cap is 55.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCurrent level cap and what is known about progression
The current 1.0 player-character cap is level 50, according to the progression guide updated October 17, 2026. Gear can reach level 55 through upgrades, but that is an equipment ceiling, not an increase to the character cap.
An older Official Enshrouded Wiki snippet for the Wake of Water version 0.9 lists a level cap of 45. That number is historical and should not be used for current 1.0 characters. Always attach the version and date when discussing the cap because a future update can change it.
Published references do not provide authoritative XP thresholds for every level from 1 through 50. There is also no official average time from a new character to level 50. Any hour-based estimate should therefore be treated as a player-specific observation rather than a guaranteed progression schedule.

How much XP comes from combat?
The current Enshrouded.tools table uses 50 XP as the base reward for a defeated enemy. It also applies a 10% adjustment for each level of difference between the player and the enemy, with a listed modifier range from 10% to 190%. The practical result is that enemy level relative to your own materially changes the reward: creatures far from your level can produce substantially less or more XP than the base figure.
Fifty XP is a reference value, not a universal payout. The same table assigns creature-specific multipliers, so two enemies that appear similar can award different amounts. Use the value to understand the system, not to calculate an exact total for every kill.
Combat XP in a party
Combat XP is reduced by 5% for each additional player in the group. The listed shares are:
| Players receiving the reward | Share per player |
|---|---|
| 1 | 100% |
| 2 | 95% |
| 3 | 90% |
| 4 | 85% |
| 5 | 80% |
| 6 | 75% |
| 7 | 70% |
These percentages apply to the listed combat reward for each player. A larger party therefore receives a smaller individual share from a kill, although the group may defeat enemies and complete objectives quickly enough to offset that reduction. The table does not establish rewards beyond seven players.
Non-combat XP sources
Exploration and progression activities form a large part of the available XP pool. The current reference reports the following totals:

| Activity | Published quantity | Total XP | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| XP-granting quests | 153 | 45,450 XP | Follow story and side objectives while moving through new areas. |
| Discoveries | 597 | 116,410 XP | Explore new locations and interact with discovery points. |
| Item sets | 126 | 48,925 XP | Complete collection requirements as you acquire equipment. |
The totals are source-table figures and can change with a patch. They are useful for showing the scale of non-combat progression: discoveries alone represent a larger listed pool than quests, so exploration is not merely a detour from leveling.
Quest rewards
The largest individual quest rewards listed are:
- 3,200 XP: “Cinders Of The End” and “Land Of The Sky Islands.”
- 2,800 XP: “Emerald Shores And Sanguine Seas.”
These are current reference-table values. Quest rewards can be revised by future updates, so do not treat them as immutable game rules.
Mining XP
Mining grants roughly 4 to 12 XP per piece, depending on the material. That is modest compared with a major quest or a large discovery total. Mining is most efficient when it also supplies a material needed for crafting, a quest or a base upgrade; mining solely for XP usually has a poor time return.
Experience Scrolls
An Experience Scroll grants a flat 100 XP in the current table. Because the amount is fixed, use a scroll when the immediate level progress matters rather than expecting it to replace questing or exploration.

- Accept available quests before setting out. Keep story and side objectives active so travel through a new region can produce quest XP and discoveries at the same time.
- Explore deliberately. Enter unfamiliar locations, activate discovery points and investigate routes that move you toward quest destinations. The current reference lists 597 discoveries, making exploration a substantial XP source.
- Fight enemies near your level. The level-difference adjustment can change combat rewards dramatically. Favor creatures close to your character level instead of spending time on enemies that are far below you.
- Finish collection progress during normal play. Complete item sets when the required pieces are already on your route. The set-completion pool is meaningful, but backtracking only for a single missing item may cost more time than it saves.
- Mine when mining has a second purpose. Gather the material needed for a recipe, upgrade or quest and collect the associated 4–12 XP per piece as a bonus.
- Use Experience Scrolls intentionally. A 100-XP scroll is useful for crossing a level boundary or shortening a specific gap, but it is not a substitute for the larger quest and discovery pools.
- Review world settings before judging your pace. On a custom world, inspect the combat, mining and exploration-plus-quests multipliers. Different settings can make two otherwise identical characters level at very different speeds.
Custom-world XP multipliers
The 1.0 progression guide reports separate custom-world modifiers for combat experience, mining experience and exploration plus quests. Each category can be set from 0.25× to 2.0×.
| Setting category | Range | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Combat experience | 0.25×–2.0× | XP awarded by eligible combat activities. |
| Mining experience | 0.25×–2.0× | XP gained from mining pieces. |
| Exploration plus quests | 0.25×–2.0× | XP from discoveries and quest-related progression. |
These settings explain why reports from different servers may not match. Before comparing a level, a session length or a perceived “best” method, verify that all three multipliers are the same. A world set to 2.0× can progress four times as quickly in a category as one set to 0.5×, even though both are using the same content.
Skill Points: levels are only part of the budget
Every character level awards two Skill Points. Reaching level 50 therefore supplies 100 points from level-ups alone, assuming the current cap and award remain unchanged.
Shroud Roots provide a separate source of Skill Points. The 1.0 guide reports 18 new roots, so the total points available for a final build are not determined by character level alone. The number of points granted by each root is not established by the figures available here; do not assume that every root contributes the same amount without a current in-game or data-table confirmation.
This distinction matters when planning a build. A player at the level cap who has not collected the available roots can have fewer points than another level-50 player, while a lower-level character with extensive root collection may have an unusually broad skill setup.

Character level, gear level and Flame level compared
| Progression track | What advances it | Current figure | What it affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character level | XP from combat, quests, discoveries, sets, mining and scrolls | Cap 50 in the 1.0 guide dated 2026-10-17 | Two Skill Points per level and access to character progression. |
| Gear level | Equipment upgrades | Up to level 55 | Equipment strength; does not raise the character cap. |
| Flame level | Flame and altar progression | Altar cap 15 before final story progression, 16 after | Altar-related world capabilities. |
Checking the correct track prevents several misleading comparisons. A level-50 character may still be upgrading equipment, and a character with a high Flame level is not automatically high level in XP terms.

Why your XP gain may differ from another player’s
Different enemy levels
The combat table adjusts rewards by 10% for each level of difference, within its 10%–190% modifier range. Two players killing different creatures can therefore report different XP even when both describe the activity as “farming enemies.”
Different creature types
Creature-specific multipliers mean the 50-XP base is not a guaranteed payout. Compare the actual enemy and its table entry rather than relying on a generic per-kill estimate.
Different party sizes
Each additional player reduces the listed individual combat share by 5%, down to the 70% share shown for seven players. Clear speed, deaths and travel time can still make co-op worthwhile, but the per-kill number will not match solo play.
Different custom-world settings
Combat, mining and exploration-plus-quests can each be set between 0.25× and 2.0×. Confirm those values before concluding that one player is receiving an unintended bonus or penalty.
Different activity mixes
A player following quests and collecting discoveries will draw from XP pools that a combat-only player is ignoring. Progress can look faster even without a higher kill rate because non-combat activities contribute substantial totals.
Practical mistakes to avoid
- Do not farm only weak enemies. Low-level targets can fall quickly but may provide poor adjusted rewards.
- Do not treat level 55 gear as a level-55 character cap. The current character cap is 50; 55 describes upgraded equipment.
- Do not use the old level-45 figure for 1.0. That number belongs to the older Wake of Water 0.9 context.
- Do not calculate a final build from level-ups alone. Shroud Roots add Skill Points independently.
- Do not compare servers without checking multipliers. Custom settings can change combat, mining and exploration-plus-quest rates.
- Do not expect a precise level-by-level threshold table. Current published references do not establish every XP requirement from level 1 to 50.
A simple decision framework for your next session
Choose the activity that advances the most objectives at once:
- If you have active quests in an unexplored region, quest and explore together.
- If you are near a level-appropriate enemy area, fight there while completing nearby objectives.
- If a crafting or upgrade task requires ore, mine that material and take the associated XP.
- If your bar is just short of a level and you have a scroll, the flat 100 XP may be enough to finish the gap.
- If playing in a group, weigh the 5% per-player combat reduction against faster kills, safer encounters and shared travel.
This approach keeps XP attached to useful progression instead of turning leveling into an isolated grind. It also remains valid when a patch changes an individual quest reward or creature multiplier because it relies on the structure of the progression system rather than one fragile farming number.
