Electrification creates jobs by expanding the systems that generate, move, store and use electricity: power plants, grids, batteries, electric vehicles, heat pumps and industrial equipment. It can also support wider economic activity by providing reliable power. But more installations do not automatically mean more jobs or higher GDP: local supply chains, grid capacity, skills, automation and policy affect where work happens and who benefits.
Where electrification creates work
Employment grows at different points in an electrification project’s life. Some roles are temporary and tied to construction; others are in manufacturing, installation or ongoing operations. New demand can also change work in industries that adopt electric technologies.
Building and connecting infrastructure
Generation projects require development, engineering, construction, electrical connection and commissioning. Expanding and modernizing the grid adds work for engineers, line workers, construction crews, electricians, and transmission, distribution and communications technicians.
Manufacturing and maintaining equipment
Electrification requires equipment such as generators, grid components, batteries and electric end-use systems. Manufacturing can support jobs where factories and suppliers are located. Once infrastructure is operating, it also needs maintenance, though an IEA 2020 analysis describes long-term grid operations and maintenance employment as smaller than construction-phase employment.

Adapting end-use industries
Electric vehicles, batteries, heat pumps and electric industrial equipment create demand for new skills and can shift existing work. For example, heating technicians may learn to install heat pumps, and auto workers may move into EV assembly. These examples describe occupational transitions as well as new roles; they do not establish that every transition creates an additional job.

| Measure | Reported figure | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Renewable-energy employment | At least 16.6 million jobs | Worldwide estimate from IRENA and the ILO, published in January 2026 in their annual review using the latest data for the 2025 review. It is not a count of all energy employment. |
| Energy-sector employment | 76 million jobs in 2024; growth of 2.2% that year | Global estimate in the IEA’s 2025 report; broader in scope than renewable-energy employment. |
| Electricity-sector employment change | Up by 3.9 million over the five years through 2024 | IEA 2025 report; includes generation, transmission, distribution and storage. The increase represented nearly three-quarters of energy-job additions in that period. |
Within the electricity sector’s employment growth over those five years, solar PV accounted for half of job additions, according to the IEA; nuclear, grids and storage together accounted for another quarter. Those are shares of additions, not shares of all electricity-sector jobs.
Why capacity growth does not translate directly into job growth
IRENA and the ILO report that record renewable capacity additions in 2024 did not produce proportional job growth. They identify economies of scale, automation and other technological innovation, excess equipment-manufacturing capacity, and grid bottlenecks that contribute to curtailment as factors moderating employment growth. More output or installed capacity can therefore coexist with slower workforce growth.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Job statistics also depend on what is being counted. Direct jobs are those in the activity itself; indirect jobs arise in suppliers, while induced jobs reflect spending by workers and businesses. A gross count in one sector is not the same as a net economy-wide total, which would also need to account for jobs displaced or shifted elsewhere. Compare figures only when their geography, period, job definitions and project phases align.
How grid investment supports employment
Grid spending can support jobs in construction, equipment manufacturing and continuing maintenance. An IEA 2020 analysis estimated that each USD 1 million spent modernizing distribution lines would support up to six jobs during a one-year construction phase and around two jobs in manufacturing. These are scenario-specific estimates from that analysis, not a universal multiplier for every grid project or a prediction of permanent jobs.

Grid readiness also affects whether generation projects can connect and deliver electricity. The IEA’s 2026 executive summary on modernizing grids describes grid infrastructure as necessary for secure, affordable electricity systems that support growth and development. Where grid constraints delay connections or limit usable output, they can also slow deployment-related economic activity.

- Supply-chain location: The location of manufacturing, installation and suppliers affects which communities receive employment and income. IRENA and the ILO discuss supply-chain localization and the policy choices involved.
- Grid capacity: Connections and transmission capacity help determine whether projects proceed and their electricity can be used.
- Skills and training: Training and reskilling help workers move into growing roles as technology and occupational demand change. IRENA and the ILO call for education and training alongside investment, industrial policy, economic development and inclusive workforce policy.
- Productivity and automation: Scale and automation can raise output without a proportional increase in workers, so installed capacity alone is not a reliable jobs measure.
- Job quality and access: Employment totals do not show whether work is stable, well-paid or accessible. IRENA and the ILO flag barriers for women and limited opportunities for people with disabilities.
When electrification contributes to economic growth
Reliable electricity and capable grids can enable households and businesses to use electric technologies and support broader economic activity. The employment and GDP effects, however, depend on conditions such as investment, productivity, skills, supply chains and the ability to connect new generation.
IRENA’s 2016 analysis modeled a pathway reaching a 36% renewable share in the global energy mix by 2030 and assessed GDP, welfare and employment. That is a modeled scenario based on dated assumptions—not direct evidence that every electrification project raises GDP, nor a forecast that applies automatically to every country.
How to compare electrification pathways
There is no sound way to rank technologies or policies by job potential using a single headline figure. A useful comparison checks that figures use consistent time periods and employment definitions, then considers:
Quick Recap
- How much of the supply chain and installation work is local.
- Whether jobs are in construction, manufacturing, installation or ongoing operations, and how long they last.
- Whether the figure counts direct, indirect, induced or net employment.
- What skills are needed, and whether workers can access training.
- Job quality, stability and inclusion.
- Whether grid capacity and supply chains can support deployment.
