An e-ink phone case puts a reflective electronic-paper display on the back of a phone. Electrical signals rearrange pigment particles to change the image; once set, that image can remain visible without continuous power to the display. Some designs use the phone’s NFC signal to provide the energy for an update, but that is not true of every case. Think of the display as a secondary surface for selected, mostly static content—not automatically as a live copy of your phone screen.
How does an e-ink phone case work?
Electronic ink is the image-forming component of an electronic-paper display. Unlike a conventional screen that shines light through or from behind an image, e-paper reflects ambient light. E Ink says its displays use no backlight and need no power to hold an image; like printed paper, they are easier to see when there is light on them. In the two-pigment implementation described by Oaxis for InkCase, tiny capsules contain charged light and dark particles in fluid. An electric field moves the particles toward the viewing surface, changing whether a pixel appears light or dark. That is one manufacturer’s explanation of its display technology; e-paper implementations and color systems can differ. E Ink’s FAQ describes the broader range of display types and update modes.
Why the image stays visible
E Ink calls the image-retention property bistability. After the display has been updated, the arranged particles can keep showing the image even when power is removed. Energy is needed to change the image, not to continuously illuminate a static one. That does not mean every complete case uses no power: a case may have other electronics, a battery, or software that periodically requests updates.

How does a case update its image?
One documented approach uses NFC. In an announcement dated April 15, 2016, E Ink described a 2.9-inch e-paper module for smartphone protective cases that drew enough energy from the phone’s NFC signal to update the display. The module was described as batteryless, with bistability retaining the resulting image. E Ink named maps, directions, barcodes, and personal images as possible uses. This establishes a specific design, not the availability or compatibility of every current retail case. Read E Ink’s announcement.
Other cases may use a different update method or include a battery. For example, Oaxis described an InkCase clock widget changing its refresh interval from every minute to every five minutes in a 2018 firmware article. That example concerns a battery-equipped case and should not be confused with the NFC-powered module. What can an e-ink phone case show?
It can show the images or content its controller and companion software support. E Ink’s case-module announcement proposed maps, directions, barcodes, and user-selected images. A particular commercial case may support a narrower workflow, such as choosing or preparing a picture in its app. A listed capability for one design should not be assumed for another.
Do not assume the back display will automatically show notifications, mirror arbitrary phone apps, or provide live navigation. Those features require specific software and product support. The general capability to display text and images does not establish that an individual case can receive or render any content from the phone.

Static images versus animation
Static pictures and content changed occasionally are the natural fit for a typical case display. E Ink says update modes vary, and some display modes can update quickly enough for animation; frequent updates, however, reduce power efficiency. That general technology capability is not proof that a phone case supports smooth video or continuous animation. E Ink’s FAQ discusses update modes.
Monochrome and color
Color depends on the display used in the specific product. E Ink lists both black-and-white and color electronic ink. For a concrete product example, Inkie describes a four-color display using black, white, red, and yellow pigments. That limited palette is not equivalent to a conventional full-color phone screen, and it is not a standard shared by all e-paper cases. See Inkie Case’s product description.

Does an e-ink phone case need a battery?
Not necessarily. A bistable display can retain a static image without continuous display power, and E Ink’s 2016 NFC module was designed to draw update energy from the phone rather than use a case battery. Other products may have a battery to power the update process or additional functions. Check the exact model’s listing for its power source and update method instead of treating “e-ink” as a promise that the whole case is batteryless.

- Phone fit: Confirm the exact phone model or generation, dimensions, and camera cutout.
- Update method: Look for NFC, Bluetooth, a wired connection, or another stated method, plus any required app.
- Supported content: Verify what the software accepts and whether you can select an image, display widgets, or use other advertised features.
- Display details: Check whether it is monochrome or color, the stated resolution, and any limits on image preparation.
- Power and refresh behavior: Determine whether it is batteryless or rechargeable, and whether any widgets update periodically.
- Physical and charging compatibility: Check the specific case’s fit, protection claims, wireless charging support, and compatibility with magnetic accessories. These are not universal properties of e-paper cases.
Manufacturer pages for examples include InkCase for iPhone and InkCase Pix. Their model names and listings are not a substitute for confirming that a specific case fits your exact phone and supports the features you want.
