SpaceX’s Starship system launches in two stages: Super Heavy is the first-stage booster that lifts the vehicle from the pad, while Starship is the spacecraft and upper stage that continues into space. During hot-staging, Starship ignites its engines as it separates from Super Heavy. Both stages are designed to return for reuse, but that remains an evolving capability—not routine service for every mission.

What are Starship and Super Heavy?

“Starship” can mean the upper-stage spacecraft on its own or, in SpaceX’s usage, the complete launch system made up of that spacecraft and the Super Heavy booster. The distinction matters: Super Heavy supplies the first push from the launch pad; Starship carries on as both the upper stage and the spacecraft.

SpaceX describes the overall system as “a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond.” That is the company’s statement of intended purpose, not evidence that all those missions or reuse operations are currently in service. SpaceX’s Starship vehicle overview lists its published configuration and goals.

How does the launch sequence work?

  1. Super Heavy lifts the stack. The booster fires its 33 Raptor engines to propel the combined vehicle upward. SpaceX says these engines burn sub-cooled liquid methane and liquid oxygen.
  2. Starship starts its engines during separation. At the transition between stages, Starship ignites its six Raptor engines while separating from the booster. This is called hot-staging.
  3. The stages part company. Once separation proceeds, Super Heavy and Starship follow different paths: the booster begins its return while the upper stage continues climbing.
  4. Starship continues ascent. Its six engines comprise three standard Raptors and three vacuum-optimized Raptors designed for use in space, according to SpaceX’s published vehicle specifications.

In its account of Flight 13, SpaceX reported that all 33 Raptor 3 engines on the Super Heavy V3 ignited for ascent, followed by hot-staging. That flight took place on July 24, 2026; the report documents one test, not a general measure of reliability. SpaceX’s Flight 13 account

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How do the two stages differ?

Stage Role Published engine configuration Intended return
Super Heavy First-stage booster; lifts the full stack from the launch pad. 33 Raptor engines, according to SpaceX’s vehicle overview. Return to the launch site for a catch by the launch tower.
Starship Spacecraft and upper stage; separates during hot-staging and continues the ascent. Six Raptors: three standard and three vacuum variants, according to SpaceX’s vehicle overview. Survive atmospheric reentry and return for reuse; SpaceX also describes splashdown as part of the return design.

The engine counts and return descriptions are SpaceX specifications and design aims, rather than independent performance or safety evaluations. Raptor is described by the company as a reusable methane-oxygen staged-combustion engine. SpaceX’s vehicle overview

How is the system intended to be reused?

Super Heavy: return and tower catch

After separation, Super Heavy is designed to return to the launch site, where the launch tower catches it. The return and catch are part of the system’s intended recovery approach; they should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every booster is recovered or reused in routine operations.

Starship: reentry and recovery

Starship is designed to withstand atmospheric reentry, perform a deorbit burn, and then either splash down or return for a catch and reuse. These are design aims and capabilities developed through flight testing, not proof that rapid reuse is established for every mission.

What the design goals do—and do not—establish

SpaceX presents Starship as a system intended to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Those destinations describe ambition and design purpose; they do not mean every advertised destination, mission capability, or reuse step is already operational. The vehicle specifications and Flight 13 account cited here are company statements, not independent evaluations of performance, reliability, or safety.
