AI upscaling lets a game render at a lower internal resolution, then uses an AI-based reconstruction process to produce a higher-resolution image for your display. On PS5 Pro, Sony calls its feature PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Sony has also announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a performance-focused option for selected games on the base PS5. Support and results depend on the game; neither feature is universal.

How does AI upscaling work on the PS5?

A game does not always render every frame at the resolution sent to the TV. It may render internally at a lower resolution, then reconstruct or upscale that image for display. Sony says PSSR analyzes game images frame by frame, pixel by pixel, and uses AI to upscale them. Its stated aims include clearer fine detail and greater image stability.

That is the useful high-level explanation, not a full technical blueprint. Sony’s public descriptions do not specify the complete reconstruction algorithm, training data, neural-network layers, or every input used at runtime. It would therefore be misleading to claim particular internal processing stages beyond what Sony has described.

What are PSSR and QSSR?

Both names refer to Sony platform features, but they are not interchangeable and do not promise identical results.

Feature Console and role What Sony describes Support
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) PS5 Pro; Sony’s higher-end AI upscaling feature. An AI-driven, machine-learning upscaler that analyzes rendered game images pixel by pixel. Only supported games and modes; Sony’s product page lists enhanced-PSSR titles and says results vary by game. Sony’s PS5 Pro page
Upgraded PSSR A newer PSSR experience for PS5 Pro. Sony says reconstruction is more precise, fine-detail clarity and image stability improve, motion stability improves, and developers have more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. Availability is tied to supported games and software rollout; Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement described a phased rollout and named titles at that time. Sony’s upgraded-PSSR announcement
QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) Base PS5; a performance-focused tier, not the full PS5 Pro PSSR implementation. Sony describes a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first supported games in its announcement. Sony’s QSSR announcement

Sony calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro and presents QSSR as a way to bring AI-guided upscaling to selected base-PS5 games. That distinction means you should not infer that QSSR has the same image quality, implementation, or hardware requirements as PSSR.

Does PSSR render a game natively at 4K?

Not necessarily. Upscaling is distinct from rendering every pixel at the final output resolution. A documented example comes from Naughty Dog: PS5 Pro modes for The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered rendered at 1440p and used PSSR to upscale to 4K while targeting 60 fps. That configuration applies to those modes; it is not a general PSSR input resolution or a guarantee for other games. Naughty Dog’s developer examples

What difference should players expect?

Sony says PSSR and its newer iteration can improve fine-detail clarity and image stability, with the upgraded version also improving motion stability. These are intended benefits, not a uniform result: Sony explicitly notes that outcomes vary by title. The game’s own rendering mode and developer tuning matter, so compare the specific modes rather than assuming a feature name guarantees a particular frame rate or image quality.

For example, developers may use the available techniques to balance fidelity and performance differently. Check a game’s mode descriptions and current patch notes for its internal resolution, output target, frame-rate target, and whether PSSR or QSSR is supported. A 4K output label by itself does not establish that the game is rendered natively at 4K.

Does AI upscaling work on the original PS5, or only PS5 Pro?

PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro. Sony has announced QSSR for selected games on the base PS5, so AI upscaling is not limited to Pro in every form. But Sony describes QSSR as a separate, performance-focused tier, and a game must implement and support it. Neither feature should be assumed to work in every PS5 title.

If you are checking a particular game, consult its current PlayStation listing or update information and Sony’s PS5 Pro feature and enhanced-PSSR list. Support lists can change as games receive updates, so older launch announcements may not show the current state.

What Sony has and has not explained

Sony’s public explanation establishes the broad idea: PSSR analyzes rendered game frames at pixel level and applies AI-based upscaling; the upgraded version is described as improving reconstruction precision and stability. The published sources do not reveal the complete algorithm or all of its runtime inputs. The 1440p-to-4K example is useful evidence of one game configuration, but it should not be generalized to every title or mode.
