A company funds a Bitcoin purchase from operating cash flow only when it has cash available after covering business needs and its liquidity reserve. “Operating income” is an accounting measure, not a pot of cash: the amount a company can actually invest depends on cash collections and payments, working capital, taxes, capital spending, debt service, and other obligations.
Operating income is not the same as cash available to invest
Operating income measures performance under accounting rules. It does not show how much cash is sitting in the company’s bank account or can safely be committed to Bitcoin. Cash flow from operations is a closer measure of cash generated by business activities, but even that does not automatically make the cash available for a discretionary purchase.
For example, a business may report operating income while waiting for customers to pay invoices, or while needing cash for payroll, suppliers, taxes, debt payments, or planned equipment purchases. Timing differences and working-capital changes can affect the cash actually available.
How the cash decision works
A company can use a cash waterfall to determine whether a Bitcoin purchase fits its treasury plan:

- Forecast operating cash. Estimate cash expected from business activities over a planning period, taking account of when customers are likely to pay and the company’s own payment schedule.
- Set aside required outflows. Account for payroll, suppliers, taxes, debt service, capital expenditures, and other known obligations.
- Preserve a liquidity buffer. Keep enough cash for routine operations and plausible disruptions. The appropriate reserve depends on the business; there is no universal reserve size established by the company examples cited here.
- Apply treasury policy and governance. Decide whether cash remaining above the reserve may be allocated to Bitcoin, and ensure the decision follows the company’s approved policy and decision-making process.
- Record the source accurately. Distinguish cash generated by operations from existing excess cash and money raised through financing.
Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes a policy that considers cash needs, working-capital requirements, capital structure, and market conditions when making Bitcoin acquisitions: Strategy’s 2025 Form 10-K. Its reserve approach is specific to that company, not a benchmark for other businesses.
Which source is funding the Bitcoin purchase?

What company filings illustrate
Strategy: operating cash alongside financing
Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says it had previously purchased Bitcoin using cash flow from operations, as well as proceeds from capital raises and borrowings. This is an example of one company’s historical funding sources, not evidence that its approach is suitable for every business.
MARA: a miner selling some production
MARA’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says that in the second half of 2025 it began selling a portion of the Bitcoin produced by its mining operations to fund ongoing operating expenses, and continued selling through year-end. That illustrates a mining-specific route from production to cash; it should not be generalized to non-mining companies: MARA’s 2025 Form 10-K.

Fold: possible uses of existing Bitcoin holdings
Fold’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes possible future strategies that include selling Bitcoin for general corporate purposes, pledging Bitcoin as collateral for financing, and seeking ways to generate income from holdings. - Liquidity: How much cash remains for operations and obligations after the transaction?
- Cost and obligations: Debt entails interest and repayment; equity can dilute shareholders and create additional investor claims. Selling Bitcoin gives up some exposure, while retaining it has an opportunity cost.
- Reliability: Recurring operating cash flow depends on business performance. Access to financing depends on market conditions, while mining sales depend on production and the decision to sell.
- Bitcoin exposure: Does the company acquire and retain Bitcoin, sell newly mined coins, or borrow against existing holdings?
- Downside flexibility: If cash flow falls or Bitcoin prices change, could the plan force asset sales or create repayment pressure?
The cited filings describe company-specific choices; they do not provide a standardized comparison of costs or performance that would rank these options for all companies.
