For an Australian quote that is GST-exclusive, multiply the air-conditioner price by 1.1. A $1,200 appliance therefore has $120 GST and a GST-inclusive price of $1,320. If the quote already includes 10% GST, divide the total by 1.1 to remove GST, or divide it by 11 to isolate the GST component. Before calculating, check the jurisdiction, the applicable rate, whether the quote says “inc GST” or “plus GST”, and whether installation, delivery and electrical work are separate taxable lines.
What is the GST-inclusive price formula for an air conditioner?
The formula is:
GST-inclusive price = GST-exclusive price × (1 + GST rate)
At Australia’s 10% GST rate:
GST-inclusive price = GST-exclusive price × 1.1
GST is calculated on the GST-exclusive base, not on the final inclusive total. In other words:
Recommended Free Tools
- GST = GST-exclusive price × 0.10
- GST-inclusive price = GST-exclusive price + GST
This is the same method described by Moneysmart: multiply an amount excluding GST by 1.1 to find the amount including GST. Tax, Super + You expresses the relationship as the GST rate multiplied by the GST-exclusive price, then adds that GST to the base amount.

How do I add GST to a GST-exclusive air-conditioner quote?
Use these steps when a supplier labels the appliance price “excluding GST”, “ex GST” or “plus GST”.
- Confirm the rate and jurisdiction. The examples in this guide use Australia’s 10% GST. Do not use 1.1 automatically for a different country or a different tax rate.
- Identify the GST-exclusive amount. Use the price on the quote, not a rounded marketing figure from another page.
- Calculate GST. Multiply the exclusive amount by 0.10.
- Add GST to the base. Alternatively, multiply the exclusive amount directly by 1.1.
- Round the displayed result to the nearest cent. Keep extra precision during a multi-line calculation and round the final presented amounts.
Worked example: $1,200 excluding GST
| Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Air conditioner price excluding GST | $1,200.00 |
| GST: $1,200 × 0.10 | $120.00 |
| Total including GST: $1,200 + $120 | $1,320.00 |
The shortcut gives the same result: $1,200 × 1.1 = $1,320. This is an illustrative calculation, not a claim about a particular model’s market price.
More exclusive-price examples
| GST-exclusive quote | GST at 10% | GST-inclusive total |
|---|---|---|
| $799.00 | $79.90 | $878.90 |
| $1,450.00 | $145.00 | $1,595.00 |
| $2,375.50 | $237.55 | $2,613.05 |
| $3,999.99 | $400.00 after cent rounding | $4,399.99 |
For $3,999.99, the unrounded GST is $399.999. A displayed invoice normally rounds that GST line to $400.00 and the total to $4,399.99. The supplier’s invoice-rounding policy controls if a one-cent difference appears.

How do I remove GST from an air-conditioner price that already includes it?
If a quote is a 10%-inclusive total, divide by 1.1 to recover the GST-exclusive price:
GST-exclusive price = GST-inclusive price ÷ 1.1
For example, a $1,320 quote including GST is $1,320 ÷ 1.1 = $1,200 before GST.
Do not subtract 10% of the inclusive total. Ten per cent of $1,320 is $132, but the correct GST in that total is $120 because GST was originally calculated on the $1,200 base.

How much GST is included in the total?
To isolate GST from a total that already includes 10% GST, divide the inclusive total by 11:
GST component = GST-inclusive total ÷ 11
The Australian Government’s small-business guidance uses this approach: an inclusive total divided by 11 gives the GST amount. For example, $352 ÷ 11 = $32 GST, leaving $320 as the GST-exclusive amount.
| Inclusive air-conditioner total | GST component (total ÷ 11) | Exclusive amount (total ÷ 1.1) |
|---|---|---|
| $352.00 | $32.00 | $320.00 |
| $1,320.00 | $120.00 | $1,200.00 |
| $2,750.00 | $250.00 | $2,500.00 |
| $4,399.99 | $399.999, displayed as about $400.00 | $3,999.99 |
The two reverse calculations are related but answer different questions: divide by 11 to find the tax portion; divide by 1.1 to find the pre-tax price.
What if the GST rate is not 10%?
Use the rate that applies in the relevant jurisdiction and transaction. The general formulas are:
- Inclusive price = exclusive price × (1 + r)
- GST or sales-tax component = exclusive price × r
- Exclusive price = inclusive price ÷ (1 + r)
- Tax component from an inclusive total = inclusive total × r ÷ (1 + r)
Here, r is the decimal rate. For a 10% rate, r is 0.10, so 1 + r is 1.10 and the tax fraction of an inclusive amount is 0.10 ÷ 1.10, or 1/11. Do not apply the Australian shortcut to a quote issued under another tax system, or to an Australian supply that is not taxable.
Is every air-conditioner charge subject to GST?
No calculation should begin until you confirm that the supply is taxable and that the quoted amount’s GST status is clear. The available data’s formulas assume a taxable supply at Australia’s 10% rate; GST-free or input-taxed treatment would change the result. Ask the supplier to identify any line that is exempt, GST-free, or otherwise treated differently rather than adding 10% to every number.

An air-conditioner quote can contain several components:
- the indoor and outdoor appliance units;
- standard installation labour;
- electrical work, a new circuit, switchboard work or compliance upgrades;
- delivery, lifting equipment or special access charges;
- removal and disposal of an old unit;
- an extended warranty, maintenance plan or other optional service.
Each line may have its own wording and tax treatment. If all lines are taxable and exclusive, you can total them first and multiply by 1.1. If some lines are already inclusive or have a different treatment, calculate each line according to the invoice and then add the results.
How should I calculate a quote with appliance, installation and delivery listed separately?
Keep the tax status of each line visible. For example, suppose a quote lists the following:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Line item | Quoted status | Calculation | Amount including GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air conditioner | $1,200 ex GST | $1,200 × 1.1 | $1,320.00 |
| Installation | $450 ex GST | $450 × 1.1 | $495.00 |
| Delivery | $80 inc GST | $80 already includes GST | $80.00 |
| Total payable | $1,895.00 | ||
The taxable exclusive subtotal in this example is $1,650, producing $165 GST and a $1,815 inclusive subtotal. The separate $80 inclusive delivery charge brings the payable total to $1,895. Treating the entire $1,730 as exclusive would incorrectly produce $1,903.
If a quote says only “installation included”, ask whether that means included in the advertised price and whether the displayed price is GST-inclusive. “Included” describes scope, not necessarily tax status.
Do Australian consumer prices already include GST?
Many consumer-facing Australian prices are displayed as the amount a household pays, and a listing may state “GST included” or “inc GST”. Business-to-business quotes more often show an amount “plus GST” or provide an exclusive subtotal and a separate GST line. Never infer the status from the number alone: look for the wording, the tax line, and the invoice total.

A marketplace listing can change price, stock, delivery charges and the way tax is displayed. A displayed amount should not be described as GST-exclusive unless the live listing or invoice explicitly says so. Use the supplier’s tax invoice as the authoritative amount for the transaction.
How do I compare two air-conditioner quotes fairly?
Put both quotes on the same GST basis first, then compare what is actually supplied. A lower appliance number may exclude installation, electrical work or delivery that another quote includes.
| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| GST status | Is each amount GST-inclusive, GST-exclusive, or unclear? |
| Appliance | Are the model, capacity and included accessories the same? |
| Installation | Does the price include standard labour, brackets, pipework and commissioning? |
| Electrical work | Are a dedicated circuit, switchboard changes or compliance work excluded? |
| Delivery | Is delivery included, taxable separately, or dependent on access? |
| Warranty and service | Are warranty extensions or maintenance plans optional taxable lines? |
| Final total | Does the quote show the GST amount and the amount payable? |
Convert every exclusive line to an inclusive amount, leave already-inclusive lines unchanged, and then compare the final payable totals. Keep tax arithmetic separate from decisions about cooling capacity, energy efficiency, noise, warranty length and installer qualifications.
How should I handle rounding on a multi-line invoice?
Money is normally presented to two decimal places, but multiplying several line items can create fractions of a cent. Calculate with sufficient precision, then apply the supplier’s documented line-rounding or invoice-rounding method. The total of rounded lines can differ by one cent from GST calculated on the unrounded subtotal.
For example, if three exclusive lines each produce GST of $10.005 before rounding, rounding each line to $10.01 gives $30.03, while rounding the combined $30.015 gives $30.02. The invoice should make its method clear. If your independent calculation differs by a cent, compare the unrounded line values and ask the supplier to reconcile the tax total rather than changing the tax rate.

In a spreadsheet, if cell A2 contains a GST-exclusive price, use =A2*1.1 for the inclusive total and =A2*0.1 for GST. If B2 contains a GST-inclusive total, use =B2/1.1 for the exclusive amount and =B2/11 for GST. Store the rate in a separate cell, such as C1 containing 10%, and use =A2*(1+$C$1) so the worksheet can be adapted when the rate changes.
What common GST mistakes occur on air-conditioner quotes?
- Adding 10% to a price that already includes GST. Check for “inc GST”, “GST included” or a separate tax line before multiplying.
- Dividing an inclusive total by 10. Divide by 11 to isolate the GST component; divide by 1.1 to remove GST entirely.
- Calling 10% of the inclusive total the GST. GST is 10% of the exclusive base, so its share of an inclusive total is 1/11.
- Assuming installation is covered by the appliance price. Read the scope and calculate separately listed labour, electrical and delivery charges.
- Applying Australian GST to another jurisdiction. Confirm the location, rate and tax type first.
- Rounding every intermediate figure too early. Keep precision through the calculation and round the displayed amounts at the end.
- Comparing an exclusive business quote with an inclusive consumer price. Convert both to the same basis before deciding which is cheaper.
- Assuming every line is taxable. Verify whether any line is GST-free, input-taxed or otherwise treated differently.
What information should appear before you accept the quote?
For a clear calculation, request a written quote or tax invoice that identifies the supplier, the appliance model, each service and the final amount payable. It should say whether prices are inclusive or exclusive of GST and, where applicable, show the GST amount separately. Ask the supplier to explain any “taxes extra”, “subject to site inspection” or “installation allowance” wording, because those phrases can leave the final taxable amount open.
Save the quote and the final invoice together. If the model, installation scope or delivery changes, recalculate the changed line rather than applying 1.1 blindly to the original total.

If $1,320 is explicitly GST-inclusive at 10%, the GST is $1,320 ÷ 11 = $120, and the pre-GST price is $1,320 ÷ 1.1 = $1,200. If $1,320 is explicitly GST-exclusive, the GST is $132 and the payable total is $1,452. The same number can therefore produce a different answer depending on the quote’s GST label.
Always resolve that label before doing the arithmetic. A correct formula cannot fix an incorrectly identified starting amount.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I ask when an air-conditioner quote says “taxes extra”?
Ask the supplier to state the jurisdiction, tax rate, whether the supplier is charging GST, and which individual lines are taxable. Request a revised quote showing the GST amount and final payable total so you do not have to infer the starting basis.
Can two suppliers show different GST amounts for the same air conditioner?
Yes. Their appliance prices, installation scope, delivery charges, optional services and rounding methods may differ, even when the same 10% rate applies. Compare the taxable line items and inclusions rather than comparing GST figures alone.

Can I use the 1.1 multiplier for a portable air conditioner bought online?
Only if the displayed amount is a GST-exclusive Australian price and the transaction is a taxable supply. Online listings can show GST-inclusive prices or change how delivery and tax are presented, so verify the live listing or invoice wording first.
